Hi Susan. The song was written by Ickle Dorritt, and I've PM'd her asking about posting the song. I think maybe it should come from her, as she can supply notes on the song as well. Trust me, you'll want the notes.

For other folks: I sang the song on Sat night at Old Songs. Ickle Dorritt had sent me a tape with this on it, and it blew my socks off. It just got in my head and I HAD to share it.

This is a great song and Jeri did it proud Saturday night at Old Songs. Sure hope the words will be posted soon. I'd really like to learn it as soon as possible.

Thanks Les for the link. I've printed it out and will read it as soon as I log off.

This is a wonderful song that deserves to be sung on this side of the pond. Thanks Ickle Dorritt.

From: Jeri

Ickle Dorritt has not said "no" to posting it. ;-) (She may be busy.) I feel like I'm exceding my authority doing it, but I'll ask forgiveness later if needed. I do hope she gets a chance to post the entire story behind the song though. All of this really happened.

Les, the first several times I heard her sing it on the tape, I had tears in my eyes. It can still do that if I think too much when I sing it. ...so much left unsaid in the song that still comes across perfectly clear.

THE LUCKIEST SAILOR
(c)Linda Kelly, Oct 1999, Whitby

I've been fishing the seas since a lad of fifteen
There's not a stretch of the ocean where I haven't been
And I've seen northern lights and the whale fish at play
And I've slept through the dog watch, been fined half me pay
And I've prayed long and hard in a westerly storm
And I've dreamed of the young girls who had helped keep me warm
And I've sat with the old jacks and listened in glee
To the tales of the women, the drink and the sea

CHORUS:
I'm the luckiest sailor that Hull ever knew
When the Kingston ship sank with the loss of her crew
And I prayed for their lives and their sons and their wives
On the day that the Peridot perished

I was a young sailor with settle in hand
From trawling in Iceland with white fish to land
And I'm dressed to the nines in me "Ruckerback" tails
And I'm off down the "Stricky" to sink a few ales
Well I'll tell you a tale of the tax man and me
He's been robbing me blind since I first went to sea
And I says to the skipper I'll spend time ashore
'Cos I'm damned if the tax man will have anymore

Then a whisper was heard that a Hull ship was down
With no chance of a rescue her men had all drowned
And I supped up me ale and I knew in me head
That the Hull ship was my ship and me mates were all dead
And the coins in me pocket weighed heavy that day
And it took little courage to give them away
And me mind took me back to me long days at sea
And I asked the good lord, why me mates and not me?

NOTES: Hopefully Ickle Dorritt will provide the notes. Ickle, if you don't have time, I could type the information from the letter you sent. I do consider a letter somewhat personal no matter what's in it, and I don't want to post the contents without permission. I'm being presumptuous enough posting the lyrics and eventually, I hope, the tune.

Ickle's away from Hull at the moment, visiting relatives in Warwickshire (where she originally hails from, but it seems everyone has a least one deep dark secret in their lives).**bg**

I'm sure she'll be happy to tell the full story behind the song when she gets back. I don't want to steal her thunder, 'cos she's one of our best mates.

I've done the tune, and put it up for critique here I don't want to send it with boo-boos in it.

Any and all comments welcome. I'll wait for Ickle Dorritt's OK to post it here or send it to MMario.

Earth to Mudcat...
Has anyone who's familiar with it listened to it?

Do you think Ickle Dorritt would rather do it herself or perhaps ask Noreen to?

Has Noreen perhaps already done it?

Jeri, your version is close. Ickle is back in Hull now, so if someone could PM her she'd probably give you an answer better than I could.

I don't have this on tape unfortunately, anyway, so must wait for Ickle to return to us.

Bloody hell where have Ii been! sorry i missed this thread until Willa pointed it out to me as we sat and listened to the amazing Jez Lowe in concert last night. Anyhoo, the song came about at Whitby Captain Cook Festival My husband does not talk readily about his fishing days -since they are a reminder of a youth of poverty neglect and everyday tragedy, but on this occasion he told me the story of the Kingston Peridot, a trawler that was his regular ship. Trawlermen in those days could earn either a pittance or a fortune in the space of one trip, as they were paid by catch size. He had had a good few trips, bought a few suits, as fishermen where always immaculate when they were on shore, in brightly coloured suits which became their trademark. Anyway, the tax man had him, and following a hefty payout john took umbridge and decided that it was a pointless objective to earn vast sums risking his life only for the inland revenue to take it away. He spoke to the skipper and told him he would not sail on the next trip out. On that very trip the Kingston Peridot sank with all hands lost. John still has difficulty coming to terms with this and the song even now visibly moves him.

I posted this above, but one more time...
This is a midi of the tune to Luckiest Sailor.

Noreen, that's weird - the file I linked to IS a midi.
If the link doesn't work, try opening your midi player. Click on File and Open, and paste this baby in there:
http://personalpages.tds.net/~jeric/lucksail.mid

I'm trying to figure out if I should submit it in MIDIText or something, or ask MMario to swipe the MIDI.

Naemanson, I did it last week! Isn't it funny how no matter how perfectly you can sing something in the shower or car, you still muck it up when doing it in front of people?

Linda gave me this song a couple of years ago, I had forgotten it until it crossed my mind this very morning

A very moving song which should have wider coverage

Puts me in mind of 'the North Wall' by Dave Evardson another excellent song from that neck of the woods

HI Willa Thanks so much for the link yes his name is there (His real name was Enoch, but everyone called him Alf) I remember my mam and dad going to the service, we have some photos somewhere of all the flowers etc. I think I may have the book was it called A Triple Tragedy?? Ive been trying to find it in one of my many unpacked boxes :( since I moved last year, I have to admit I havent ever read it, because everytime I see the pictures of the ships iced up, it horrifies me (isnt that pathetic, and me ,a fishermans grand daughter) I am ashamed really, but I never realised just how hard their lives were. Has anyone heard anything about a film been made of the trawler disaster? my sister told me a few months back she had ead it in the H.D.M. and promptly rang the editor and told him what she thought of him!! anyway, thanks for that link, its weird to see his name on here, its really nice to know people are so willing to help   Best wishes    Sue x

sue
There was a proposal by a local man to put a film together, but I think his intention was simply to get those who didn't know about the tragedy and the trawlermen's hard lives to realise the dangers they faced; he was not intending to sensationalise events. Perhaps the reaction from local people was enough to put him off the project.

My own grandfather was a Hull skipper whose vessel was torpedoed in 1941 and went down with all hands, according to the logbook of the u-boat captain responsible, in 15 seconds. Grandfather's ship had earlier diverted to pick up some of the crew of a Norwegian trawler which had been sunk and had taken them to safety. The u-boat was itself sunk the following year; so many stories like that.
If you ever get the chance to visit the Hull Maritime Museum, ask to see the Book of Remembrance, which is beautifully illustrated and contains the names of 6000 men from the area who were ost at sea. Your granfather's name will be one of them.

Thank you for posting that link Willa. As I read the order of service for Holy Trinity Church, Hull, Friday, March 8, 1968, tears come very easily........I can see the faces, smell the smells......am still dazzled by the colours of the flowers and the glitter of the uniforms in what seemed a very black and white world of memories at that time, and still deeply feel the comming together of that special comunity to mourn their losses. I was there......as a 12 year old head choirboy at Holy Trinity.....doing my job. It is one of the most vivid memories of my childhood, one that I am still proud to have been a part of, and probably marks the start of the loss of my childhood inocence. A very poignant moment for me.

Hi all decided to write after reading your many posts, just came across this page by accident. I am the webmaster of a site dedicated to Hull Trawlermen and the vessels they sailed in. I have been researching material for the past 2 years and I am still uploading nost of it. The aim of the site is to build up a reference to the many men who lost their lives, and the men who are now scattered far and wide.
I think the Lyrics portray a feeling held by most trawlermen and families regarding the loss of their loved ones.
Best Regards Chris.

I've been trying to learn this one for a year or so but it was only when SueVG started doing it with the Shellback chorus that I managed to sing it without dissolving in tears. I hope to get the chance to sing it at the Getaway. Although not anative Hullite I spent several years there at University and met many folk whose roots were in the fishing industry that has so sadly declined.

First time I heard it -- sung by Sue van G (at Micca's request), while Linda K (and others) listened -- I too ended up in tears. Like all great songs, it is moving because it is so straightforward, honest and unsentimemtal, even though it telling us about a tragic event.
The only (teensy tynsy) issue I have with it is that I wish I'd written it... ;7)
