Les, the first several times I heard her sing it on the tape, I had tears in my eyes. It can still do that if I think too much when I sing it. ...so much left unsaid in the song that still comes across perfectly clear.

Anyhoo, the song came about at Whitby Captain Cook Festival My husband does not talk readily about his fishing days -since they are a reminder of a youth of poverty neglect and everyday tragedy, but on this occasion he told me the story of the Kingston Peridot, a trawler that was his regular ship. Trawlermen in those days could earn either a pittance or a fortune in the space of one trip, as they were paid by catch size. He had had a good few trips, bought a few suits, as fishermen where always immaculate when they were on shore, in brightly coloured suits which became their trademark. Anyway, the tax man had him, and following a hefty payout john took umbridge and decided that it was a pointless objective to earn vast sums risking his life only for the inland revenue to take it away. He spoke to the skipper and told him he would not sail on the next trip out. On that very trip the Kingston Peridot sank with all hands lost. John still has difficulty coming to terms with this and the song even now visibly moves him. |

Ive been trying to find it in one of my many unpacked boxes :( since I moved last year, I have to admit I havent ever read it, because everytime I see the pictures of the ships iced up, it horrifies me (isnt that pathetic, and me ,a fishermans grand daughter) I am ashamed really, but I never realised just how hard their lives were. Perhaps the reaction from local people was enough to put him off the project. My own grandfather was a Hull skipper whose vessel was torpedoed in 1941 and went down with all hands, according to the logbook of the u-boat captain responsible, in 15 seconds. Grandfather's ship had earlier diverted to pick up some of the crew of a Norwegian trawler which had been sunk and had taken them to safety.The u-boat was itself sunk the following year; so many stories like that. If you ever get the chance to visit the Hull Maritime Museum, ask to see the Book of Remembrance, which is beautifully illustrated and contains the names of 6000 men from the area who were ost at sea. Your granfather's name will be one of them. |

As I read the order of service for Holy Trinity Church, Hull, Friday, March 8, 1968, tears come very easily........I can see the faces, smell the smells......am still dazzled by the colours of the flowers and the glitter of the uniforms in what seemed a very black and white world of memories at that time, and still deeply feel the comming together of that special comunity to mourn their losses. I was there......as a 12 year old head choirboy at Holy Trinity.....doing my job. It is one of the most vivid memories of my childhood, one that I am still proud to have been a part of, and probably marks the start of the loss of my childhood inocence.
