BS: Any INSOMNIACS out there?

I expect if you've tuned into this thread, you are an insomniac, or live with one. I was just wondering. What is so bad about being an insomniac? Have we many here? How do you cope with it? How does your partner cope with it? I made a lifestyle change as a result of my nocturnal activities. People are always asking me where I get the time for my various activities, I just tell them I can't sleep and I don't watch TV. two of the greatest time savers known to man.

Experiences, anyone? Deni

I suspect that there are a great many of us. Not everybody needs, or can tolerate, the old 8 hrs routine.

Yeah, I guess you could say so.

Some of my partners didn't do well with it at all. I had one partner who was able to help me sleep at night, so it wasn't a problem with him. For some reason, when I was with him, I was able to adopt normal daytime/night time patterns. Overall, I'd say it kind of sucks. Although I do love the night time. But I love the day time, too.

Yep! It's only 2:30 am here...

Oh well. Hey, I may not wake up to see the dawn, but at least I often see it anyway!

The best way to see dawn is on your way to bed.

I'll sleep when I'm dead.

R.E.M. is highly over-rated.

All interchangable, depending on who's telling you to get more rest. Actually I find that my most creative times are when the rest of the world is asleep. I get the bonus of having an 'awake' mind with no one else up to distract me. With partners, I usually can manage to snuggle in for a bit, and extract myself quietly when they nod off.

I'm a bit that way as I've grown older. My problem is going to bed at midnight and awaking bright eyed and bushy tailed around 3:30am. I no longer have a partner, so it doesn't affect anyone other than myself, so I usually get up, tune into the Mudcat, or read or turn on the TV and the latter is a sure fire way to get back to sleep eventually.

My insomnia is caused by my husband who snores long and loud, with occasional gasps, wheezes and mutters. Not to mention his sleep apnoia when he stops breathing completely and frightens me half to death. How can I stop a middle aged, overweight beerdinker from Snoring?

With a pillow, thought the police may take a dim view of it.

This would have fit right in with me last night if I was one to hit the Pewter at that time of night, but I refrain, thinking that I might not be able to get ANY sleep if I did.

I find if I put a fan to go close to my side of the bed, the noise helps to drown out the snoring, and funnily enough, it also seems to make my wife snore less! Of course, she claims it's Me that keeps Her awake...

I find milk and cookies helps at 2 AM. Or 2 PM for that matter! I'm with Jen. REM is highly overrate...zzzz. As for snoring, make him wear a clothes pin, if you can still find one, on his nose. It won't stop the snoring but it'll make you laugh so hard you won't mind the snoring. And it leaves these cute little meerkat marks on the bridge of his nose in the morning...

A

Okay, but does anyone find that they change their sleep cycles during the year?

I find that most of my insomnia occurs in the spring/summer. More light? Anyway, it's no trouble at all to go on a couple hours sleep, it's all my bod wants. In the winter though, I seem to want more rest. Latent ursine tendencies?

A snorer can reach incredible sound levels. Get separate beds, if not separate sleeping rooms, and get at least 6 feet away from the snorer!

I'm not an insomniac - It just that:
1) I don't need that much sleep & 2) I have a different sleep pattern to most people.
Having worked waking nights 10pm - 8am for the last dozen or so years may have something to do with it .... on the other hand thinking about it I never needed that much sleep and have always thought of 6am as belonging to the night before so maybe it's just that my work fits my sleep pattern. JenEllen... I was going to post re yearly cycles, but didn't have time earlier. I can knock off 8h a night in the winter. In spring and summer I become restess. Fall is weird, altogether. I'm like a buck deer in the rut. Within a few weeks after harvest moon, I have incredibly increased drive and energy. Nothing to cruising the woods all day without food and, on the next two full moons, cruising the woods at night, too.... when I get a chance to get to the woods, that is. Perhaps it's to do with preparing for winter or the mating season ?

I'm not a habitual insomniac, but I do fall into cycles wherein I wake up at the same time each night (right now it's 4am). I usually read, write or quietly play an instrument until or unless I go back to sleep. Sometimes I just lie quietly and rest, letting my mind wander.

Also, my cat has a lot to do with interrupting my sleep, especially in the spring and fall; he bounces onto the bed at frequent intervals all night long, begging me to play with him! I keep telling him "Daytime is playtime" but he never listens.

I need sleep. Eight hours is about right for me. My problem is with establishing any kind of regular sleep patterns. So far, I haven't been able to do it myself, and the only time in years it has happened was when I was with the one partner I mentioned above. I still don't know why it worked with him. It never worked with anyone else.

Lyndi-loo... they don't howl on the full moon... unless they have something down. They are more apt to howl on the new moon or in cloudy weather. Baying at the moon, from my experience, is an old wives' tale. Course, if they keep you from your beauty rest, a few hoots of your own will shut them up pretty quick.

I used to be a bright-eyed and bushytailed morning person, but working rotating shifts has thrown my sleep patterns WAAYYY out of whack. I never sleep more than 5 hours at a stretch, but I have been known to grab an afternoon nap. When my eyes pop open at 0400 I go into contemplation, write, or listen to music with headphones. Hey, Lyndi-loo, I see a lot of people with medical problems related to their sleep apnea. They come for a cardiac workup from heart arrhythmias, or chest pain, and they find out it's caused by their sleep apnea. Has your husband's sleep apnea been evaluated? Would he go? Some people hate the C-pap or Bi-pap machines they wear at night, but they usually help their symptoms because they relieve the morning headaches and the high blood pressure (all this stuff can result from sleep apnea!) It's worth a suggestion, I think. Anybody else have experience with this? Sharon

I need about 10 hours of sleep to stay happy and energetic.
Problem is, I have disturbing dreams, and never want to go to sleep (unless I am thouroghly depressed). So I'll stay up till say... 2 am and then have to wake up at 7 in the morning. It's not so bad now that I'm in summer vacation, except now I get 1 or 2 hours less sleep than I need, as opposed to 4.

Interesting to hear what gnu says about sleeping a lot in the winter and being restless in the spring and summer. That would fit in with what we know of animal behaviour. That didn't sound as it was meant to sound. I didn't mean to say you were like an animal gnu, ...although you do have the name of an animal...What I meant was, oh well, never mind...

Lindyloo I hope you can manage to get your husband to get his sleep apnoea checked out. My husband's health check probably saved his life. I've put away my pillow now... D

I get seasonal insomnia - usually around autumn (something to do with spiders of the big fat hairy variety), and occasionally in spring. Mostly it's stress related, or snoring related. Manitas could snore for Britain, but won't have it looked at. He also does the loud honks and whistles and then goes silent for a few minutes. He gets worse the more he drinks.....

I usually end up on here, or reading in various rooms around the house. One memorable night back in March I read for 2 hours, did 3 hours of ironing, made packed lunches for myself and the bratling and still managed to get to work for 7.00am, leaving the house at 6.00. That was stress related. But I find it quite easy to fall into the waking at a particular time each night routine. Just recently it's been 3.30am, a Godforsaken time of night if ever there was one.

I go through phases of insomnia, ( I was wide awake at 4.30 am this morning)and hate it because my body will insist it hasn't had enough sleep even when I know it has.Seems to be getting worse as I get older too.Anyone else read Stephen King's Insomnia?

I share a cabin frequently with friends while on trips - and figured that of the two sleep related problems I undergo (snoring and sleep apnea) it would be the snoring that would bother them the most. I was surprised to find out that the sleep apnea caused them more problems as far as waking them! A tonsilectomy about 5 years ago has reduced both my snoring and the apnea a great deal - and it was only after having the tonsils out that my friends confessed that it was when my snoring stopped that they would wake - and lie there thinking "breathe! breathe!" until they heard me start up again.

I couldn't sleep 'cause I fell in love with the most stunningly beautiful woman. For weeks I lost weight and lay awake all night thinking about her.
We hit it off and now live together.
Now I don't sleep for other reasons - but at least I've always got a smile on my face.

Himself is a notorious insomniac. I usually try to go to bed around 10 PM, read and watch TV for two or three hours, and just as I'm ready to shut it all off and grab some sleep, he comes to bed and turns up the volume. Jay and Conan (second run) are NOT good sleep partners. Himself swears, however, that he thinks too much and too hard to sleep without the TV. I say the flickering lights and volume differences are not condusive to sleeping. So, he tossess and turns, switching channels until I sigh (very loudly) at which point he goes to the sofa. Then, I get insomnia, because I know he's uncomfortable. It's a vicious cycle.

There are a few things that will relax him and put his lights out, however. Strenuous exercise is one of them. I usually encourage him to play paintball if he's had too many nights like this.

If it weren't for him, I could sleep through an earthquake.

Deni... I AM an animal. Aren't you ? I don't think it's just because I am so closely in tune with "nature", being brought up next to the woods and being a woodsman (when I can). I think we all tend to reflect some of this, although I cannot relate to those who live in a regionj where the seasons don't have clearly defined boundaries such as in New Brunswick, Canada. We are wet in the spring, baking in the summer, perfect in the fall, and freeze in the winter.
