ADD: Not For Joseph (Not for Joe)^^

In the Help Forum, Pavane said he was having trouble finding "Not for Joe" with Mudcat search. The "not" was being read as a Boolean search command and not a word. There is a mention of the song in the Digital Tradition, but not the song itself. I found it at the Levy Sheet Music Collection.
It's a great song. I'll transcribe the tune and send it off to Mudcat MIDIs.

NOT FOR JOSEPH
(Arthur Lloyd)

Joseph Baxter is my name, My friends all call me Joe;
I'm up, you know, to every game, and everything I know
Ah, I once was green as green can be, I suffered for it, though;
Now if they try it on with me, I tell them not for Joe

CHORUS
Not for Joe, Not for Joe; If he knows it, Not for Joseph;
No, no, no; Not for Joe, Not for Joseph, Oh, dear, no.

I used to throw my cash about In a reckless sort of way
I'm careful now what I'm about And cautious how I pay;
Now the other night I asked a pal With me to have a drain
"Thanks, Joe, old pal," said he, "I think I'll have champagne."
[spoken] Will ye, said I; oh, no-
CHORUS

There's a fellow called Jack Bannister, he's a sort of chap, is Jack.
Who is always money borrowing And never pays ye back
Now last Thursday night he came to me, Said he'd just returned to town
And was rather short of cash - Could I lend him half a crown?
[spoken] Well, said I, if I thought I should get it back again,
I would with pleasure, but excuse me if I say -
[CHORUS]

A friend of mine, down in Pall Mall, The other night said, "Joe,
I'll introduce you to a gal You really ought to know;
She's a widow you should try and win - 'Twould a good match be for you
She's pretty, and got lots of tin, And only forty-two."
[spoken] Fancy forty-two, old enough to be my grandmother
-and you know a falla can't marry his grandmother
- lots of tin, though, and pretty, forty two- No,
CHORUS

I think you've had enough of Joe, And go I really must;
I thank you for your kindness, though, And only hope and trust
That the favor you have shown so long I always may retain,
Perhaps now if you sing my song, You'll wish I'll sing again
but -
CHORUS

ADDITIONAL VERSES

T'other day in Chatham Street, I passed a little shop
A fellow came, with smile so sweet, and begged of me to shop;
Vould I come vith him and take a peep At vatches made of gold
He said he's sell me very sheep; Says I, "I can't be sold."
CHORUS

Once I took a Broadway stage All dressed up in the style;
A lady did my eyes enrage, So kindly did she smile;
When I take the Herald up next day, In "Personals" I see:
"Sat opposite - in stage - Broadway - Please call at Station D"
CHORUS

Rambling gayly up and down, Oh many nights I've seen
A fellow oft is done quite "brown," Who happens to be "green."
Once a woman asked me if I'd hold Her baby for a while
A touching little tale she told - That dodge it made me smile.
CHORUS

Oh, I've had a host of "friends" Who spent my money free
Not one of them now condescends To crack a joke with me
But my "eye-teeth" have been cut since then, I never open wine;
I'll never lend a cent again, It isn't in my line.
CHORUS

Now I'll end my little song; I'd like to take a wife
To cheer me on my way along, Without one, what is life?
But it takes so much to dress a girl, No matter where you go,
It sets my head all in a whirl - It wouldn't do for Joe!
CHORUS

Thanks Joe. I didn't know the song, just that it existed.

I still can't see how Not for Joe is related to Om si the Gom. It doesn't seem to fit the tune. Maybe the name was just transferred from another tune, as sometimes seems to have happened in the Morris tunes. The original lyric I was looking for was the one from which the 'Wild West Show' fragment was taken.

I thought that you might be interested in the other Not For Joe. It used to be sung at the end of mummers plays. (Sorry about the racist comment but that was how it was!) Does anyone know of any other verses - preferably non-racist?

NOT FOR JOE

Humdidi, dumdidi, toorah loorah,
Humdidi, dumdidi, toorah ley,
Humdidi, dumdidi, toorah loorah,
Play it on my old banjo.

1. We had a little nigger,
And he grew no bigger,
So we put him in the Wild West Show.
He fell through a winder,
And he bloke his little finger,
And he couldn't play his old banjo.

Toorah loorah lilo,
Toorah loorah lilo,
Toorah loorah lilo,
Play it on my old banjo.

Humdidi, dumdidi, toorah loorah,
Humdidi, dumdidi, toorah ley,
Humdidi, dumdidi, toorah loorah,
Play it on my old banjo.

2. My uncle Billy,
Had a ten foot willie,
And he showed it to the girl next door.
She thought it was a snake,
So she hit it with a rake,
And now it’s only five foot four!

Toorah loorah lilo,
Toorah loorah lilo,
Toorah loorah lilo,
Play it on my old banjo.

Humdidi, dumdidi, toorah loorah,
Humdidi, dumdidi, toorah ley,
Humdidi, dumdidi, toorah loorah,
Play it on my old banjo.

Keep singing!
"I've got a friend in Yellowstone. Yogi, Yogi!"

Alan

Thanks, that was where I came in, in another thread Lyr Req: om si the gom with the same words except that the chorus was 'om si the gom si the toor a li do' etc. I can see why John Kirkpatrick didn't include the second verse.

Dave Jones (d 1990) who ran Bromyard FF used to have a dance side that we all would call "morris" but he steadfastly referred to them as "Na Fa Joes" because the research he did revealed that the old dancers insisted they were not morris dancers but "Na Fa Joes". Sure enough they sang a shortened version of the song in and out.
this was in the Hereford / Ledbury area of UK.
