Lyr Req: Bonaparte's Retreat

I've heard some variations on these lyrics, although I don't have any of them. The lyrics are relatively brief, as I recall.

BONEPARTE'S RETREAT
by Pee Wee King and Redd Stewart
As recorded by Pee Wee King on "Highlights from Melody Ranch, Vol. 5" (2014)

Met the girl I love in a town way down in Dixie
'Neath the stars up above-she was the sweetest girl I ever did see
[§] So I held her in my arms and told her of her many charms
I kissed her while the fiddles played "The Bonaparte's Retreat."

All the world was bright as I held her on that night
And I heard her say: "Darlin', please don't go away."
So I held her in my arms and told her of her many charms
I kissed her while the fiddles played "The Bonaparte's Retreat."

REPEAT FROM §.

A search of the database (see the blue box at the top of this page) for Bonaparte's or Bonaparte* or retreat or the phrase [BONAPARTE'S RETREAT] will give it to you. AS far as I know, the basic 2 parts of the tune are trad; Pee-Wee King added the lyrics and the C part.

It's in O'Neill's 'Music of Ireland', #1789, 'Dance Music of Ireland', #980, and the Roche Collection, II, 280. All these are available as reprints.

Our band, the Birch Road String Band, has been playing bonaparts retreat for 3 years now and we still sing the only verse we know over twice. I would like to get a couple new verses. Anybody know any.

Hi, Jeff - go to the search box in the upper-right corner and search under bonapart* (the "wild card" asterisk will let you find any words beginning with "bonapart," and there may be a variety of endings). You'll find at least a few new verses, and maybe somebody will post more here. If the verse you know isn't in our database, be sure to post it.

You may be thinking of The Battle of New Orleans
where Jimmie Driftwood used: The 8th of January

I'm not sure but I think "The Eqghth of January" is a completely different song from "Bonapart's Retreat"
