New member saying hi / 'Heave yo ho' song

29 Jun 01 - 11:36 PM (#495207)
Subject: New member saying hi.
From: Celtic Soul

Hello all. I have used mudcat for a few years now in searching out lyrics but have never taken a look into the forum until now. I am a singer/bodhran player in Virginia and have been involved in folk music for nearly 20 years. I am interested in finding the lyrics to a song called "Heave yo ho". Has anyone ever heard of this one?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome, fellow Celtic Soul. Do you mean the Mingulay Boat Song, by any chance?

Welcome, Celtic Soul! What you are asking for is a common refrain for sea chanteys--do you have anymore words at all?

This Zoo is only dangerous near feeding time........what time is that at your house? LOL! Jump right in.

No, not Mingulay Boat Song, but the sound is similar. The version I heard was sung by a man with a fairly thick Scots accent, so it was difficult to make out much of what he said. It had a similar feel to that piece though, but more heavily celtic.

Thanks!

I'm just taking a wild guess. Sorcha is right. Could you give us more info?

Welcome to the Mudcat, Celtic Soul. Do you know the name of the gentleman who sang it? Any other words?

From: Celtic Soul

The version I heard was done by a group named "The Battlefield Band.

The name of the song may very well not be "Heave Yo Ho". A friend of mine had it on a home made tape, and he called it that, but that may be his name for it and not what it is known by to the world at large.

I appreciate all your help :)

Here it is mate. I dont think its the one you want, but I posted it anyway. (not in the DT) Yours, Aye. Dave

Hook-o-rin-yo!
When winds do blow
Sea-reivers know the madd'ning music
Ho-i-o the winds do blow
Ho-i-ril great shoals of seal
Har by our keel fast follow after
Ho-i-o the winds do blow
Wild sea-ducks and greedy geese
Look for a feast when we're at anchor
Ho-i-o the winds do blow

Hook-o-rin-yo!
On Davach low
There's kine and corn and golden candles
Ho-i-o the winds do blow
Men at play ere close of day
Will cold as clay in kiel be lying
Ho-i-o the winds do blow
Men that sleep will waken wide
Ere with the tide we leave their Cala
Ho-i-o the winds do blow

NOTE= Sea Reivers are Pirates;
davach= a large corn vat meaning here as much land as that amount of corn would sow.
kiel= churchyard (pronounced keel)
Cala= haven, hence Calais French seaport, pronounced Ka-la

Hi Celtic Soul
Your clues thick scots accent and Battlefield Band got me thinking of our dear departed Davey.
A check through the threads suggest that the song you want is Davey Steel's "Heave Ya Ho", from Battlefield's "Rain, Hail and Shine" album, no words turned up on the thread though, mabye this time.
The album is just a couple of years old at most, second last one Davey made I think, so someone should have it.
love, john.

Welcome Celtic Soul,
Recently we had a mini gathering of Mudcatters in Alexandria (Mrrzy of C'Ville and Naemanson of Maine) to sing some chanteys at Cate's Bistro (third Tuesday every month). There is an Open Mic at Tiffany's Tavern in Old Town Alexandria that runs Mon thru Thursday ... Just checked it out last week and there's room for more ... Come on down!
Cheers,
Brian

The basis of this song [Heave Ya Ho] was sung to Davy by Bobby Copeland, an old oyster fisherman from Prestonpans, a small town on the Firth of Forth. Davy made the tune and incorporated as many of Bobby's words as he could remember. The oystermen fished in two rowing boats, heading parallell to each other, and the shoreline, dragging (or dreggin) a weighted net between them. The songs would keep the rowers, and therefore the boats, in time with each other. The songs were generally impromptu affairs, and could be fairly gossipy. 'The Whale', by the way, was a fisherman's pub in 'the Pans'.

That sounds right :D

I am trying to make out as many of the lyrics as I can on my own, but again the accent is thick. If anyone has this one, that would help a great deal.

I thank you for the title of the album. I am wondering if maybe JUST maybe they might have put lyrics in the liner.

Your assistance is mucho appreciated.

No, sadly I am *not* in the UK. I currently live in Northern Virginia in the US. One day I hope to visit the land of my ancestors, but have never to now.

If I ever manage, I will be sure to post saying I'm coming! (Not that the UK is not used to silly American tourists such as myself and would need the warning) ;)

Well. Writing out the lyrics wasn't as easy as I thought. There are some things that Davy says that I simply cannot understand.

Man your boats and leave "The Whale"
What care we for calm or gale?
I'd tak' a drink as long as you can
And brandy's good amongst ?????

Chorus: Heave ya ho, and away we'll go
Heave ya ho, and away-o
Heave ya ho, and away we'll go
Heave ya ho, and away-o

Wait, young lass, they're all the same
Mag and Meg and Jeannie and Jane
Oh how they laugh when we fish
But oh how they're gone when ?????

Chorus

Lay the twine for those lang-tails
Comin' doon the brae-o
And sheman (??) get a' cream o' the milk
And wemen (??) get a' the way-o

Chorus

What care we for wind or storm?
What care we for game-o?
Gin ??????????? creel o'er the side
We'll drink the milk of "The Whale"-o

Chorus

The following words are taken verbatim off the insert to the BFB Rain, Hail, or Shine CD. (as is Matt R's word-for word post of 30-Jun-01 - 10:03 PM, explaining the basis of the song.) I first heard Davy Steele sing it at the Band's gig at the Barns at Wolftrap about 3 years ago. He invited the audience to sing along to the chorus. Great song. Matt R - ya got real close in your translation. I've got my guid missus looking over my "shoder" (she's frae Scotland) and she assures me these are the proper words.

Man your boats and leave the Whale
what care we for calm or gale
Aye tak a drink as long as you can
brandy's guid amangnst the ale

Chorus
Heave ya ho and away we go, heave ya ho and away-o
Heave ya ho and away we go, heave ya ho and away-o

Wave tae yer lass they're a' the same
Mag and Meg and Jeanie and Jane
Oh how they laugh when we hae fish
but oh how they girn when we hae nane

Chorus

Lady Twynfords lang tails
comin' doon the brae-o
She maun get a' the cream o' the milk
an' we maun get a' the way-o

Chorus

What care we for wind or storm
what care we for gale-o
Gin we maun haul a' the creel o'er the side
we'll drink the milk o' the whale-o

Chorus

CS - If you ever make it to your ancestral land (Scotland or Ireland[?] - I assume it's one or t'other, judging by your chosen handle) you'll feel the sense of beloning right off the bat. I spent 9 years in Scotland, and for me, leaving was the hardest damn thing I've ever had to do. I'm American Scots/Irish (mostly Scots). Never felt more at home ANY PLACE else in my life, including my hometown in Michigan. Hope you can get there someday.

In the Lady Twynford's verse it seems to me that Davey sang

"we must get a the whey-o"

We thought that too, and I'm not altogether sure Davy sings "Lady Twynford" either. I merely transcribed the words printed on the CD insert. I did make one assumption, which is most likely incorrect. In the last line of the first verse, the insert has "het" before "ale." I thought that was probably a typo, intended to be "the." However, listening again to the track, it sounds like Davy sings "het." As my wife later pointed out to me, that line means that the brandy goes down well in between warm beers("het" being "hot"). I'm a "purist", and getting the words right is extremely important to me. It really helps to "ken" what they mean.

Cheers.
