Need Good Thoughts Dog Lost on Mtn.

Please help my sister and me. She and her twin are visiting here, camping up on Casper, Mtn. They just called me to say her dog, Holly, had broken her leash when she saw a deer and gave chase. She is black and difficult to see. It is dark up there and she has not returned. They have driven all over the campgrounds looking for her and alerted the sheriff.

There is a lot of territory up there where a dog could go and people can't unless they are on foot.

Please send any good thoughts, prayers, etc. to my sister, Priscilla, and her twin, Rebecca, and to Holly, for her safe return. She has kept Priscilla from deep depression, and its consequences, with her love and steadfastness.

Thank you very much,

love,

kat

That's great news Kat!

In 1990, I lost my Lab retriever "Blue" on Mount Elbert, the highest mountain in Colorado. He was apparently circling the summit looking for me, and survived some three days at that 14,500 ft elevation. Two climbers were able to coax and carry him the seven miles back to a bar near the trailhead. I remember picking him up in my truck and watching him peacefully nodding off in the back while I wished that somehow he could tell me what the experience had been like for him.

I guess both Priscilla and I were very lucky to get our friends back.

Leej had a dog and his name was Blue,
Betcha five bucks he was a good dog, too.
Singin' "Hello, Blue, you good dog, you."

Leej went climbin' along with Blue,
Leej came down, but where was Blue?
Singin' "Hey there, Blue, won'cha come down, too.

Folks found him near froze and brought him down,
Filled him fulla hooch and he come 'roun'.
Leej said "Hey, there, Blue--Ain't I glad to see you!"

And hey, Lonesome, I thought Pike's Peak was the tallest mountain in Colorado. What'd you hillbillies do, import Elbert from Alaska?

Pikes Peak isn't the tallest mountain in Colorado, just the most famous. In fact, Long's Peak, which is next to Pike's, is taller, but through some illusion, looks smaller. Very strange.

Here endeth the trivia lesson for today. Go in peace.

Funny thing about "optical illusions" and actual size, huh Jeff?

So tell me, did you use that one on your first girlfriend too when you told her, "No really, it's 16"....really.....It's just an optical illusion that makes you see it as an inch!"

kat,
On Sunday an Asian couple came to look at my apartment. The wife's name was Holly (He called her Horry) and the name kept going through my head all day and all night. Now I know why. So glad she is back. Anybody want a kitten?

Well done, --seed! So good to see you here!

LeeJ, I am sure glad you got your dog back, too. That's a hell of a climb and to spend three days, wow, tough old Blue!

It's funny, just before we left them last night, I offered my cellphone for emergencies. Something just said I ought to. I was thinking it must be about one of them, but now I know. When they first called me, they were in such a panic, having driven all over calling and peering into the darkness for a distinctive wavy, flag-tail.

I told them to go back to their tent and wait that she would come back. When I wrote to you all I was not near as confident and was feeling badly about not rushing up the mountain to be there for support.

Then I remembered something that has never failed me. I put a bubble of Light around my sisters and their camp, extended a line of Light out from it, visualised her dowg surrounded by this light and the line acting as a leash, pulling her back to them. After I got the image down, I gave thanks and let it go. About 10 minutes later, just after Spaw and Jenellen posted, they called me to say she'd come back.

I have helped to find many lost pets over the years and that has never failed. I was too frazzled to remember to do that, though, until I posted this thread and felt the calm assurance that Mudcatters would help out. THAT's when I calmed down enough to actually help.

Thanks a bunch for your stories and well-wishes. I will be sure to share them with my sisters.

Jeffp, thanks for correcting the myth about Pikes Peak. Long's Peak is gorgeous and was the inspiration for my brother's symphonic tone poem, Ode to the Rockies. Near Boulder, at least in my experience, Long's Peak looks larger and is just magnificient.

I can tell you from personal experience that from Manitou Springs, Pike's Peak definitely looks taller than Long's. Just one of those instances where your eyes just refuse to believe your mind.

Spaw, I'm trying to come up with a snappy comeback and failing miserably. I tip my hat to you, sir. Just be glad that's all I'm tipping!

No, but the cat across the street did. Picture this - a very fastidious little man arrives to look at the apartment. Right behind him is an hysterical April yelling "Come quick! She's having her babies!". He looks perplexed. I try to calm her down with "Is she OK?" "Is she having problems?" All I get is an agitated "She's screaming. It hurts." Then "It does hurt to have babies. Are they coming out or are they stuck?" By now little man is very uncomfortable. "They're coming out all over!" "Good. Calm down. Go back and sit with her. She'll know what to do. You have to stay with her and keep her calm". "OK". And she runs out and almost gets hit by a car. To little man: "This is the living room. It has a wood burning fireplace." At which point a very pregnant Alice shows up ...poor man looked sick. But he did make a fairly decent offer on the apartment. Alice is still very pregnant. As is Margarita at my nephew's place. She showed her dislike of his nesting boxes by overturning the garbage can and filling them with garbage. He has a brand new bed. Just delivered last Sunday. I suggested rubber sheets and a sense of humor. He too didn't know that it hurts to have kittens. SIGH.

Uh, jeff...Pike's Peak overlooks Colorado Springs. Long's Peak is almost 100 miles north of it. Maybe that's why it looked smaller?

I'm so glad to hear that Holly is back safely with those whom she loves and who love her, as I'm happy that Lonesome EJ's dog was found alive and well. Yeah, pets are great stress-busters, except when they're the stress-creators by running away, having litters, getting sick and such.

I know I'd go nuts if my pet (a 13-year-old cat) were lost; it's hard enough to leave him all alone to go to work! Two years ago, I had to have my other cat put to sleep after his slow, years-long decline from gradual kidney failure; I still get all teary just thinking about the whole ordeal, and I'll always miss him.

lEJ, that must be it. From Manitou Springs they appear to be next to each other. That must be where the illusion springs from.

This all reminds me of something that happened in the early 80s in the Scottish Highlands. I was sharing a cottage near Glencoe in february with some friends, for some winter climbing. One evening another pal from Aviemore called in and told us that a friend of ours had had an accident the previous day on Beinn Achallader (sp), a Munro near Glen Orchy. Adam had been out for a winter walk with his border collie Moss for company. They had wandered up the Beinn via a steepish snow filled gully up the back of a North facing coire. Adam of course used crampons and ice axe, while Moss just had his toe nails. The two of them made excellent progress until they were near the top of the gully, when Moss got well in front and saw Adam below him, turned and started descending. His claws were great for climbing, but totally useless for descending, so he started sliding down the gully. Adam made a grab for him as he shot past, missed, and found himself hurtling after him.

He fell maybe 1500 feet and badly fractured his ankle and a few other things. When he came to, Moss was not in sight. With much effort, he got himself to a farmhouse a mile or so away, and was taken to hospital in Fort William.

Having heard this story, four of us headed for Ben Achallader the following morning, and we went up the Beinn by different routes, and met on the summit. The guy who went up the gully saw no sign of moss until near the top, he stopped, looked around, and called his name. He heard a bark very close by, then saw a nose sticking out of the snow. Moss had obviously reclimbed the gully to where he'd last seen Adam then dug himself a snow hole and stayed in it. His tail was frozen into the snow, and my friend said Moss had tried to wag the mountain! We weren't allowed to take Moss into the hospital, but Adam saw him through the ward window - his expression was something very vivid in my memory.

While Adam was in hospital, Moss stayed with some friends of Adam's and got their bitch pregnant, so three days in a snowhole had obviously done him no harm!

Cheers
Ray
