Tech: copying spam filter file Netscape

Subject: Help: copying spam filter file Netscape
From: Helen

I have been using the message filters in the Netscape 4.75 Messenger, i.e. e-mail programme. I want to find the list of everything I have put in there, copy it and sort it in some way, and share the e-mail addresses with anyone else who wants to filter out the spam. At present I have about 100 in the list, I think.

Is there a way to do this or is the file encrypted or archived or something?

I appreciate any help you can give me on this. It's not a life-or-death thing, it's just something I would like to know how to do, so if it isn't possible it is no big deal.

Helen

well, if I read it correctly, in your Netscape folder, go to users/mail/rules.dat

that files called 'rules.dat' is where those filters are stored. If you make a copy of this and send it to someone, and they replace THEIR 'rules.dat' file with yours, it should work.

Thanks Bill. I'll try that.

What I was wondering was, if someone replaced their file with mine, then they would lose any filters they already had, wouldn't they?

I have a lot of spam filters, and I have been putting the filters in every time I get spammed for the last few months, so my list is pretty good, but there are obviously a lot missing.

yes, there can be only one file with the name...they'd have to re-add theirs...same with the bookmarks file, though the bookmarks are in a simple HTML file and you can have 27 different sets if you wish, as long as you open them with the 'file/open' menu....

but you 'could' re-name the .dat file and keep track of which one you were using...but it would be esier to just re-type a few filters.

BTW...I almost never use Netscape for mail...I use Eudora...filtering is a bit easier there, seems to me
