Kelv, some folks are going to be puzzled by "Lyr/Chords ADD" which means here that you are providing such rather than requesting (Req) them. Great tune and song.

Hi kelv,

It's quicker and easier to do a Forum search first to see if the answer has already been provided.
Click here for a few threads with the answers. Also, there are a couple of sets of lyrics to this tune, so keep looking through Malcolm Douglas's blue clicky links if you don't find the ones you want, and then after that you can refresh this thread if you need to know more.

I think Kelv wants the chords, and already knows the lyrics, so here we go.

MIDNIGHT ON THE WATER

Well, I(D) never thought much of(G)that fancy(D)dancin,
With(D)my two left feet and my rovin(A)eye.
But when the(D)band plays the old tunes(G) in that 3/(D)4 time,
I could(D)dance with my darlin till (A)dawn's early light

(G)Play me a fiddle tune,(D) sing me a song.
(G)Banish misfortune, my(D)time is not(A)long.
(D)Midnight on the water so(G)steady and(D)slow.
The(G) lark in the mornin one(A) more for the(Bm) road.
Mid(G)night on the(D)water so(G)steady and(D)slow
(G)Let's have an(D)other drink and(A)set em up(D)Joe.

Hope this helps. I don't recollect the chords ever having been supplied in any of the other threads.

Murray

Actually none of sets of words are exactly what Ron Kavana wrote and sings on the 'Think like a hero' recording. So there's only him and me getting it right!

Les, you would do us all a great favour if you would post Kavana's exact lyrics. I know that what I aing is almost certainly not what he wrote, and the Watersons may have aletered them as well, so how's about it?

I don't have them with me at the moment, so I'd better have a final check in case I'm getting them wrong as well! There are also some slight variations in the tune and arrangement.

Any of you folk who haven't heard of Ron Kavana - in any of his small host of guises - won't know what you're missing.

The following small selection of links will, hopefully, whet your appetites. The man is a genius musician, able to blend traditional music with other forms to good effect but with a genuine interest in preserving other people's traditional music as well. The opening track on "Coming Days" illustrates both aspects of his musical personality perfectly (halfway through the song Irish Ways I can become really homesick!).

Incidentally, a friend of mine back in Derrytrasna, County Armagh, reckons that Ron's version of Midnight On The Water from "Think Like A Hero", a track on a home-made compilation which I sent, helped him to retain his sanity at a time when he felt he was in danger of losing it! Something we're both thankful for ...
