But...I just found out yesterday that when using the Google search engine (www.google.com for the unitiated), in addition to the many, predictable world languages which you can select as your Interface Language by clicking on "Preferences" (from Afrikaans to Welsh), there are a few unexpected options, including: Pig Latin, Bork, bork, bork! (a la the Swedish Chef), Elmer Fudd, and Hacker. So, for instance, in Bork, bork, bork! mode, you don't perform a Google Search, you perform a Google-a Seerch, and look for Seerch Teeps, not Search Tips. If you click on "Pwefewences" in Elmer Fudd mode (that would be "Eferencespray" in Pig Latin mode), since your Interface Language is all Elmerized, the bit on the Pwefewences page where you select Search Language (not the same thing as Interface Language, but instead the language to which you limit the cast of your net) asks you to choose among such languages as Fwench, Gweek, Hebwew, Joimin, and Womanian. (Was it Reagan who thought that was what they spoke in Latin America?). I've found it doesn't insist on the search requirements being in Latin, but it's a way of findimg out what all the other languages are in Latin. Or Irish...or Tagalog.
Now if only Babelfish could extend its range to include a few more languages, and we could get away from this English monoglot approach to the net. |

When I translated to English, the results were hilarious. The Tu was translated to the highly personal you,the 23mm double cannon became 23 Misters doubles gun, and the revised engine air intakes (des bouches d'air révisés) became revised devices air terminal. rr |

Like, go from Epingle in French to Penis in English: Epingle = pin, pin=pine, pine=Penis, and so on. Running translations backwards through translation machines is always a howl. |

Except this one's real. It "Babelizes" text you enter from English to French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, with stops back into English along the way. So "out of sight, out mind" eventually becomes "of the Vista of the external alcohol for the part" instead. Of course. Shad |

One of the jobs I do to earn a crust is translating technical German into English. I can sleep soundly now in the safe knowledge that there'll be work for mere human beings like me for many years yet... Now - here's a little ditty that I used to sing at The Dock and Railway Tavern, Falmouth (any Mudcatters remember that folk club ?) in around 1978.
