06 Jul 01 - 08:03 AM (#499665) Subject: transmagnificanbandancuality From: pavane I found this magnificent word in a song here Scarlet Fever Jane. Is it a new contender for the longest word in the English language? It beats antidisestablishmentarianism by one letter, if my count is correct! |

06 Jul 01 - 08:29 AM (#499685) Subject: RE: transmagnificanbandancuality From: Steve Parkes Seems like a good idea to me: if you get stuck for words to fill a line when you're writing a song, just make one up that's got enough syllables to plug the gap! |

06 Jul 01 - 12:08 PM (#499866) Subject: RE: transmagnificanbandancuality From: Uncle_DaveO This trans..ity and super...ious are of little interest because they are made-up just to be long, with no content. So trans..ity may be longer than antidisestablishmentarianism (a REAL word), but so what? And even if you gave it credit there, it's not longer than floccinaucinilipilification (another REAL word)! So There! Nyah, nyah, nyah!! Dave Oesterreich |

06 Jul 01 - 02:28 PM (#499988) Subject: RE: transmagnificanbandancuality From: McGrath of Harlow For once it's true to say they don't write 'em like that anymore. Any info on who wrote it?
And any idea what the tune might be like? I'd love to see how it'd go down some Sunday night in the Half Moon... |
06 Jul 01 - 02:29 PM (#499990) Subject: RE: transmagnificanbandancuality From: Mrrzy Meanwhile, what a great song! I loved it! Now to see if I can parse transmagnificanbandancuality...
trans- = across So that yields the fact of a woman of great stature (literally or figuratively) with unknown attributes. Gotta love that kind of person! |

06 Jul 01 - 05:06 PM (#500123) Subject: RE: transmagnificanbandancuality From: Little Hawk Reminds me of nonsesquipealianistically transcendetalism-inspired narcissistic-cum-sollipsysmic crap! Or something like that... Right, Spaw? - LH |
06 Jul 01 - 05:08 PM (#500124) Subject: RE: transmagnificanbandancuality From: McGrath of Harlow I suggest parsing it this way:
transmagnific : exceeding magnificent anbandan: variant of abandoned cuality: tendency to make lovey dovey noises.
In other words, an awesome uninhibited bird. |
06 Jul 01 - 05:28 PM (#500139) Subject: RE: transmagnificanbandancuality From: Grab Won't be the longest word in the dictionary, anyway. There's chemical names in the dictionary which require half a page just for the word... Incidentally, there's a "hi" missing from your "floccinauciniHIlipilification". Graham. |
06 Jul 01 - 05:54 PM (#500163) Subject: RE: transmagnificanbandancuality From: Little Hawk There was some guy in England who ran for the Monster Raving Loony Party, I think it was, and he had his name legally changed to something that went on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on...line after line...I heard it on the radio. It really caused problems for newspeople and I believe they had a lot of trouble entering it on the ballot, because there wasn't enough space for it. I'm sorry I wasn't a citizen of the UK at the time. I would have voted for him! Does anyone in the UK recall this man, and what his name was? - LH |

06 Jul 01 - 09:54 PM (#500313) Subject: RE: transmagnificanbandancuality From: Little Hawk Wonderful! We had a similar party in Canada...the Rhinoceros Party. One of their proposals was to end unemployment by abolishing Statistics Canada. Another was to move the Rocky Mountains east to the Maritimes, so that BC wouldn't feel isolated anymore, and the Maritimers wouldn't feel left out when it came to towering mountain vistas. Haven't seen the Rhinos just lately...too bad. - LH |
07 Jul 01 - 03:56 AM (#500438) Subject: RE: transmagnificanbandancuality From: pavane I think the Monster Raving Looney party pointed out that more of their policies had been adopted eventually than any other party. Must be something to do with Europe and the EC. On the original subject, unlike many of the others proposed, this one was in print over 100 years ago, and therefore unlikely to have been made up specifically as a record attempt! Rave on! |
07 Jul 01 - 02:58 PM (#500687) Subject: RE: transmagnificanbandancuality From: GUEST,Fred The perpetual candidate of the Monster Raving Looney party died just recently. He was a lord who had changed his name, but I don't remember to what. The obit didn't mention the incredibly long one. |
