14 Jul 01 - 01:40 PM (#506453) Subject: Another nice one from Christy From: Den I was home recently and picked up the latest cd, "This is the day," from Christy Moore and I must say I think its great. There are only two tracks penned by the man himself; "Veronica", a song about the reporter Veronica Guerin who was murdered in Dublin and "Scallcrows." I really like the title track it conjures up images of the west of Ireland that I remember. "Jack Doyle," is another beautiful, haunting song. I think that he could have put a couple more tunes in that were maybe a little more upbeat but over all I think that Christy fans will be happy with it and if you're not familiar with his music then I think you should pick it up and check him out. 15 Jul 01 - 11:00 AM (#506988) Subject: RE: Another nice one from Christy From: Big Tim I've listed Christy as one of my all-time favourites on the Favourite Folksingers Thread so I hope this new album is better than his last two,Collection and Graffiti Tongue, I think they were called, I can't remember as I gave them both to a charity shop which raised eight quid from them. His Rose of Tralee was an embarrassing piece of drivel, he would have been better singing the old original. Does anyone agree with me that Christy is one of the ALL-TIME great singers but a pretty average songwriter? Anyway I look forward to testing the new album and thanks for letting me know about it, out here in the Argyll sticks. |

16 Jul 01 - 05:38 AM (#507494) Subject: RE: Another nice one from Christy From: Wolfgang I too have been disappointed by Christy's recent releases, but I might have to listen again. I don't agree with you Tim, at least not with all. I agree with your assessment of his singing, the man was and is great. But of his own songs I always thought that the funny ones (Joxer, Knock, some talking blues pieces) were much better than average efforts and better than his serious songs. Wolfgang |

My own Christy Moore collection consists of only 2 albums but one of them which I believe is sometimes referred to as "The Black Album" has been a favourite of mine (all of my records, tapes, etc. not just CM) for I don't know how many years. 16 Jul 01 - 01:03 PM (#507744) Subject: RE: Another nice one from Christy From: GUEST,JB I would have to agree with the Big Tim´s view that Christy is not a brilliant songwriter. True, his more humorous songs like "Knock Song" "Joxer" or "St. Brendan´s Voyage" are excellent and very well put together. However, I feel he tried too hard to be a songwriter on the "Graffiti Tongue" album. I also feel that to do a CD exclusively of your own material, you have to have that something special. They may be very personal songs but they dont get to me. Previously it was the combination of his own material and his ability to choose great songs by other writers which made such a lovely balance. As for the "Traveller" album", well this was simply a comuter/electronic album with rehashed material. I played it one and put it aside for ever. With his new CD "This is the day," Christy got it right again. He is returning to the style that made him so unique. Songs written by excellent songwriters, lovely acoustic work by Donal Lunny and Declan Sinnott and no computer shite! It´s back to the roots. JB |

16 Jul 01 - 01:29 PM (#507773) Subject: RE: Another nice one from Christy From: Big Tim Jon: the "black Album" is Planxty, with Andy Irvine taking half the vocals, a classic album. From Christy try "Live in Dublin"(1978), only 9 tracks but all terrific with the standout, for me, "Black is the colour of my true love's hair" (a version I believe he got from his old friend Hamish Imlach of Scotland). and "Prosperous"(1972), 12 tracks, all top drawer. All the best W. |

17 Jul 01 - 04:14 AM (#508367) Subject: RE: Another nice one from Christy From: Wolfgang Two albums with Christy Moore have earned the label 'The Black Album'. Planxty (1972). That can be confusing. JB, I'm glad you're telling us that Christy is 'back to the roots'. I also have played 'traveller' only once and can't think of a reason to play it again. Wolfgang |

17 Jul 01 - 10:35 AM (#508571) Subject: RE: Another nice one from Christy From: GUEST,Den Like many other artists Christy seems to have made "fence Post" albums along his career. For me the fence post albums were The Time Has Come, Ordinary Man, The Voyage, Smoke and Strong Whiskey and King Puck. The others I feel may not have been quite as strong but I've found individual gems on them never-the-less. I must admit that Traveller took a few listens. I think a long with other people that I wanted Christy to be Christy. Just up there with his guitar. So Traveller was quite a shock. I have to say that now I rate it up there with some of his best. I think, to be fare you really have to listen to it more than once. The driving rythmns in The Rocky Road and The well Below the Valley, I think work really well for those songs. Lovely Young One is a beautifully haunting song about a teenage suicide, which uses programmed sounds to add to the atmosphere. I really think that this album is Christy's most misunderstood to date and I personally don't think it should be resigned to the scrap heap without listening to it a few times anyway. Den |

17 Jul 01 - 04:20 PM (#508924) Subject: RE: Another nice one from Christy From: Gaz Just over 4 years ago I was fortunate to get a 6 month secondment working in Dublin. One of the loves I acquired whilst over there was that of Irish music, and one of the highlights was seeing Christy Moore at 'The Point'. Since then, I have collected around 7 or 8 of his albums, but I have to say my favourite, without a doubt, is 'Traveller'. I look forward to hearing his latest - maybe I'll pick it up next time I'm in Dublin, as I haven't seen it here in the U.K.(?). Slainte, Gaz. |
