Lyr Add: Are You Lonesome Tonight (parody)

Subject: Lyr Add: ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT (parody)
From: GUEST,Zorro.

A friend in San Francisco sent me this and I'm anxious to do it at a nearby coffee house, but alas, I can't work out the chords. Can anyone help? I think it's a hoot! Z.

Are you lonesome tonight, does your tummy feel tight?
Did you bring your Mylanta and Tums?
Does your memory stray, to that bright sunny day...
When you had all your teeth and your gums?

Is your hairline receding, are your eyes growing dim?
Hysterectomy for her, and it's prostate for him.
Does your back give you pain...do your knees predict rain?
Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?

Is your blood pressure up, your cholesterol down?
Are you eating your low-fat cuisine?
All that oat bran and fruit, Metamucil to boot,
Keeps you like a well-oiled machine.

If it's football, or baseball...he sure knows the score.
Yes, he knows where it's at...but forgets what it's for.
So, your gall bladder's gone, and his gout lingers on.
Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?

When you're hungry, he's not. When you're cold, then he's hot.
Then you start that old thermostat war.
When you turn out the light, he goes left, you go right.
Then you get his great symphonic snore.

He was once so romantic, and witty and cute.
How'd he turn out to be such a cranky old coot?
So don't take any bets, this is as good as it gets.
Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight.

Somebody, perhaps Pene, is incredibly swift today! I posted something on another thread a little bit ago and discovered that I had missed a "<" and the whole thing wound up in italics. It couldn't have been much more that a minute or two later, the whole thing was fix.

I am really impressed. And immensly appreciative of the Joe Clones around here. They bring order out of chaos.

Thank You (times 10 to the Nth),

Don Firth

By the way, Z, that's a helluva song. I just cut-and-pasted it into my "Songs to Learn" folder. I hope that's okay with you. Who wrote it?

There is a recording of Elvis with parodied seventh line. From then on, the recording was mostly of Elvis laughing.

Are you lonesome tonight,
Do you miss me tonight?
Are you sorry we drifted apart?
Does your memory stray to a brighter sunny day
When I kissed you and called you sweetheart?
Do the chairs in your parlor seem empty and bare?
Do you gaze at your bonnet and wish you had hair?
Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?
Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?

I suspect Elvis threw the hair joke, in some form or other, into more than one of his live performances of that song, so there might be more than one recording of him sending it up.

I've heard one - not the one where he is mostly laughing - where during the talking part he becomes increasingly silly and incoherent. There's the line:

"Now the stage is bare, and I'm standing there - without any hair...".

I too have a recording of the laughing episode - very infectious! The backing 'girl chorus' plough on relentlessly behind him. I was told that Elvis sang 'Do you gaze at your bald head and wish you had hair' whereupon the bloke in the audience whose condition prompted the lyrical departure began dancing and waving around a toupee. Elvis finally ends, muttering something about '20 years of professionalism down the drain'.

Dave Reader does a wonderful Black Country parody of this. It has to be heard to be believed.

Are you lonesome tonight
Is your brassiere too tight
Are your corsets just drifting apart....
