From: A Wandering Minstrel Been a couple of years since I was there but there used to be a club at one of the pubs in the Market place opposite the town Hall and next door to the Old Friars sweetie shop. I believe it met on Wednesdays. Also there used to be guest concerts at the theatre by the lake... |

In 1997 I was in Buttermere for a weekend of walking and I met up with a load of traditional singers (shepherds, farmworkers etc) who were there for the later summer fair. I've not had such a good sing in years. At the end of the evening I was invited along to a pub (I think it was called the Farmer's Arms in Keswick) where there was going to be more singing. I couldn't go because I was staying in a youth hostel and had to be 'home' by 11pm. I regreted not going ever since! John |

From: Susie Don't know all the pubs/possible venues off-hand, but will look out for any in this week's local paper and keep you informed. Beware though - your holiday coincides with the "Keswick Convention"... places that might normally have an "informal music night" may have given way to events to satisfy the huge gathering which arrives in Keswick from around the world at this time every year to rejoice in religion and discuss bible topics. I'll look at Cockermouth as a nearby alternative - usually lots of live music there. Shame you're not here on the Sunday - great evening at The Old Crown in Hesket Newmarket on the first Sunday of every month - and they brew their own beer! Susie |

I saw a mention of Folk in the Queen's Head in the main square in the middle of Town, on a website. probably Folk clubs by region or some such thing |
