17 Jul 01 - 11:15 AM (#508607) Subject: Nottingham Gates From: pavane Some years ago, I heard someone sing a song called Nottingham Gates, which I believe is a modern song about the town of Nottingham. (Gates, in this context are streets, not doorways). Anyone ever heard of it? |

18 Jul 01 - 11:56 AM (#509625) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nottingham Gates From: pavane None at all, I am afraid. After thinking about it, it may have been written by the couple who sang it, and if so, is unpublished. |
18 Jul 01 - 12:16 PM (#509639) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nottingham Gates From: Ringer Are there any "gates" in Nottingham? Chesterfield, Sheffield & York are full of 'em, but I don't remember, from a childhood near Nottingham, any gates. But I'm probably mistaken. |
27 Jan 09 - 01:45 PM (#2550288) Subject: Lyr Add: NOTTINGHAM GATES From: GUEST,Ian Clegg Here it is ... NOTTINGHAM GATES 1. In Wheeler Gate a hand I lent With a blunt spoke shave to the bench was sent, E'er one day had passed I could plainly see This was no place for me. 2. In Barker Gate there leather was tanned And I hammered sheepskin with me own right hand, But the burning gorse made such a foul reek I were out that place in a week. CHORUS: Unto Wheeler, Barker, Carter, Lister, Fletcher, Fisher Gates I've strayed, Been an arrowman, a leatherman, lace I've made For I am a Nottingham jack of all trades. 3. In Carter Gate made bottles of glass But there's hardly room for a man to pass, For carts full of coal roll by all day, So from there I made me way. 4. To Lister Gate I went after that Carried yards of cloth to the boiling vat, With scar and dye me hands turned blue So I left wi'out more ado. CHORUS 5. In Fletcher Gate, there arrows were made And the grey goose feathers all around were laid, They went up me nose and they made me sneeze, I were out that place with speed. 6. Our pike and trout from the Trent it came To Fisher Gate, which had no drain! I pegged up me nose till I made it sore, I'll never go there no more. Chorus

28 Jan 09 - 10:02 AM (#2550977) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nottingham Gates From: pavane Oops - pressed send too soon, sorry for blank posting The couple who sang it in Dubai c1979 were Richard and Diane Ball. (As far as I know, they are still there) |
28 Jan 09 - 10:05 AM (#2550980) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nottingham Gates From: GUEST,Edthefolkie Well done Ian, somebody else remembers that song. It's rather good - as Sooz says it was on an album called Folk Nottingham Style which I have just found in a dusty corner! The album may have been part funded by The Nottingham Festival which was a doomed attempt by Nottingham to do an Edinburgh. The song itself is credited to "Hemlock Stone" (a sandstone outcrop in Bramcote). Apparently Hemlock Stone were Richard and Diane Ball, Val Wheeler, and Michael Pidcot. No doubt they are still around - heads up anybody? |

28 Jan 09 - 11:37 AM (#2551063) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nottingham Gates From: pavane Richard and Diane Ball were founder members of Dubai-Sharjah Morris in 1977, and were active there in the folk clubs at the time. |

28 Jan 09 - 04:08 PM (#2551330) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nottingham Gates From: Dave Sutherland The names that you mention are not, as far as I am aware, active on the current Nottingham folk scene; however it might be an idea to PM Roy Harris (burl) in case he has missed this thread as he certainly was around Nottingham at that time and might have had some input into the festival. |
13 Apr 20 - 02:21 AM (#4045731) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nottingham Gates From: GUEST,Helena It's also on a recording called G'day me duck, by the band, Bedlam. Not sure who it s members were. |
15 Apr 20 - 06:12 AM (#4046203) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nottingham Gates From: Peter the Squeezer Use of "gate", meaning street, is common in northern English and Scottish towns. It originates from old Danish, so probably dates from the time of the Vikings. |
19 Mar 21 - 03:32 PM (#4098382) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nottingham Gates From: GUEST,Val Matthews (nee Wheeler) Hi Yes I can confirm that Nottingham Gates, both lyrics and music, was a joint effort by the four of us - those were fun days. There were so many brilliant folk clubs in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire to go to and such great talent around. Since Richard and Diane went to Dubai we have sadly lost contact. I wonder where Mike Pidcot is now? |

02 Apr 21 - 05:40 PM (#4100456) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nottingham Gates From: Steve Gardham All of the 'gates' I know of in Northern cities and towns actually were gates and the street led up to the gate and so was named after the gate. These all had defensive walls with gates at all the main routes into the fortified cities/towns. They were also called 'bars'. |
