Great new film: 'Songcatcher'

Subject: Great new film: 'Songcatcher'
From: paddymac

Had the opportunity to see this fillm today. It's an ensemble piece, featuring Janet McTeer and Aidan Quinn. The story line involves a brit musicologist at the turn of the century (the 20th) "discovering" authentic folk music from the Celtic Isles in Apalachia. It's not a "big budget spectacular", but if you appreciate Apalachian music, especially in the sean nos stlye, you'll like this film.

paddy.....ya' know I love ya'.......you're a great guy and all and we've been friends here a long time .....right? So when I say this, please take it with all the love and friendship behind it.......Okay?

ARE YOU TRYING TO DRIVE ME FOCKIN' NUTS!!!!

Do me a favor so I don't have to make the list again.........Enter 'songcatcher' in the filter box and set the refresh for 1 year........You'll find this thread is Songcatcher Nine. On one of those threads I actually linked all the previous Songcatcher threads. I wish we could get in the habit of checking for previous threads before we start new ones................................*sigh* ...........................Oh well..........Say, you wouldn't want to start one on Seagull Guitars would you? I think we only have about a dozen and a half or so on them....................

Maybe a note on the "create new thread" page advising people to check up on the archives first might help...

I don't mean people should feel they should always revive an old thread rather than start a new one. Some of them get a bit long, and mayve there's a different angle that the new one is trying to open up - but it might be a good idea to stick a link to the precursor threads in the opening post.

For one thing it means we are less likely to have people leaping on us from a great height to tell us the previous threads existed, and questioning the rationale for the new one.

20 Jul 01 - 09:07 PM (#511677)
Subject: RE: BS: Great new film: 'Songcatcher'
From: catspaw49

Kevin, I'm not "leaping on anyone from great height".........Believe me, I know that many times a new take or whatever is important as is a new audience. The Soncatcher thing just cracks me up, but even when there was a note asking people to check old threads, it didn't get read! However, if you have come looking for info on Seagull Guitars or any topic, it just makes sense to check back and see what has been said previously. Then maybe you refresh a thread that's apprpropriate......or maybe your question is already answered.

Searhing is not all that hard and frankly there have been so many topics discussed here that reading old threads may be not just educational, but also a way of saying opinions mean something. I'm not pissed here and definitely not pissed at paddymac who is an old and valued member. Nothing will change the situation short of a program that forces a search before starting a thread and that's a ridiculous amount of work I think.

So I try to treat the thing humorously or throw in the past relevant threads as clickies in the new thread. I fear at times though that they don't get read and I'm not sure why. Just the 'Cat and another day.............no big deal.

You know, you do have to be a little careful about suggesting that people always research their topics. What if somebody was wondering how to kill a thread.....?

Hey Spaw,

You said, "I'm not leaping on anyone from great height"

Sorry, I have to disagree with you. That's exactly what you were doing. If you don't want to read another thread about Songcatcher, just don't read it. It's real easy. It's a lot easier for you to do that than it is for other people to reseach a bunch old threads and spend the loads of time it takes to read through them all. I get about half an hour to one hour a day to read the computer. I'm not going to spend it reading all the old threads on the Mudcat making sure some topic hasn't been covered before.

In my case, I had no interest in Songcatcher until it showed up at the $3 theater near me, which it just did. I was wondering if I should go see it, when a thread popped up here about it. "Cool", I thought, "I can see what other people thought of the movie." Instead I get a lot of hot air and a list of links to old threads. I click on a couple of them and read the first several posts in both and still don't know what anyone thought of the movie -- except for paddmac, who started this thread that so annoyed you. I'm glad he did.

Again, if you don't want to read a thread just don't read it. Please don't fill it up with your bitching. I can't think of any reason for you to have opened this thread other than to give yourself the opportunity to correct someone else's behavior. So now I'm correcting yours. Go figure.

..........oy..............Sorry John....really.........I'm not annoyed, just find it humorous that we do this all the time, but I'll tell you what............This is my last word on the subject period. I read lots of threads of all types and if I had a dime for every time this happens I'd be rich. It's not a big deal and I'll drop it here and now.

I agree with you on reading and not reading what you choose.......I know tone is difficult to pick up on the net, but believe me, this was more humorous to me than annoying.........so much for links, I'll leave it to others.

Thanks John, for your post.... and paddy...Glad you liked it.

As a new guest, I'd never heard of the film, so I am appreciative of it being mentioned.

Did a search for the film locally through Moviefone.com, and find it isn't in my area.

But it also seems to have been released last summer?

Are people seeing it in second run and art houses?

And finally, does anyone know if it is available on video/DVD, or when it might be coming out?

Thanks!

As the instigator of this albeit inadvertant, needlessly repetitive thread, let me assure one and all that absolutely no offense was meant, given or taken. It's just a pleasant little "family chat" amongst good cbyer-friends. Helpful instruction of the gentlest kind, given and taken in the spirit if fillial love, with , perhaps, a pinch of sibling rivalry thrown in for good measure. So let's all relax, have a good chuckle, then run out and see a most enjoyable film.

Leaping on from a great height wasn't really meant critically. It what we always used to do in the swimming pool when I was a kid. It was essentially non-malicious, but it could be a bit disconcerting, and it was a good idea to keep an eye out for descending divebombers.

Now of course they've got rid of the diving boards in the interests of safety, so the kids go out and ride skateboards in the traffic instead..

I thought I remembered that there used to be a warning like that in the "new threads" page. I think I might even have taken its advice on occasion anyway and checked. And I also know that the last time I started a new thread there wasn't any such advice and I didn't check.

All this reminds me of a PG Wodehouse story I've cited previously, which hinges on some unsuspecting chappie being advised to sing "Sonny Boy" in a concert. An innocuous enough, if somewhat glutinous song - but it so happens that a small army of other unsuspecting chappies have been advised to sing the very same song at various spots earlier in the evening. The denouement being that the poor lad nearly gets lynched when he remarks tunefully "Climb upon my knee, Sonny Boy".

I've searched the web pretty well and there is a ton on the soundtrack, but as of this point in time, no video or even mention of an expected release time. I'm sure it will be as almost everything is nowadays, but you never know.

No mention either of overseas release, although someone in another of the Songcatcher threads made the comment that the translation versions usually come out (French) about 2 months later so possibly they will release the overseas market all at one time........or not.

.....Thanks paddy......

Same warning I posted in one of the other Songcatcher threads:

The soundtrack CD has only a slight (3 out of 16 tracks) resemblance to the movie soundtrack. Instead of traditional presentations of the songs--the thing that made the movie worth hearing--you get Nashville overarrangements by the likes of Gillian Welch, Alison Krause and Emmylou Harris.

Thanks for bringing up this new thread, Paddy. I needed it. There a zillion threads and we all have to skip some. I think when the first one appeared I must have thought 'Songcatcher' sounded like some pseudo-folk New Age crap and skipped over it. Then when 'Snogcatcher' started showing up I knew it was an inside-clique thing and skipped that too. So here we are on a slow news day and I finally learn about this apparently important film. (because you named the thread in a sensible manner)THANKS!

Because I don't know which of the 10 threads someone may be tracing, I'm posting this on ALL of the "Songcatcher" threads.

Our good member annamil has a video store and I asked her to check on the " of the movie being available on videotape and as she always does, came through for us. Here is what she posted:

**********************************************************

I just called my dealer and he says it will be out Oct 23rd and I will pre-book it Oct 1st. You won't be able to buy it for awhile, but you will be able to rent it. I didn't know about this movie til I read this thread and I only read this thread because someone mentioned it in another thread. I can't wait to see it and more importantly, I can't wait to HEAR it.

I'm not sure how many I should order for the store as this is the first I've heard of it.

From what I heard and read here, it may be worth 10 threads ;-)

Love, Annamill

**********************************************************

So go bug your local videostore and tell them you want to rent "Songcatcher." And when you do.........Don't start another freakin' thread huh?

I liked the movie of better & the soundtrack of . BTW, as I understand it, Sheila Kay Adams, a 7th generation ballad singer from North Carolina, was a consultant on the movie & most of the songs in it are her versions. Some are on her cd, . Her husband sings authentic Civil War songs. Check out her website at

Her Christmas recording is wonderful, as is the book of stories from her childhood. I plan to order more of her recordings soon!

The first time I saw Songcatcher, I was mesmerized by the singing and enjoyed the movie as a whole. The second time around, I was still mesmerized by the singing, but less impressed with the story and some of the characterizations. It really lost its lustre for me. Some movies grow on you after repeat showings, but this one somehow had the opposite effect. Still, the producer and director are to be praised for presenting traditional song with an ear to authenticity and sensitivity, and I would recommend it to anyone here who hasn't seen it.

The film has run endlessly on HBO this December. It is surely available on tape or DVD as it was suggested to me by friends who have neither cable nor SatDish. I liked everything about the film except for the story. The acting was ok but not near enough of Iris Dement. The setting was beyond beautiful, the props and costumes were spot on, the music was out of sight good. But contrived isn't strong enough to cover the story.

Don
