Please anyone help me with the lyrics, this is for an old pensioner pal who can still sing with the best of them. Ottie Patterson of Chris Barber fame recorded this ad did Ruby Murray. Slan Ard Mhacha.

Couldn't find anything terribly valuable, neither. But it might be an idea to keep an eye on theRuby Murray Home Page, as it seems to be updated with lyrics and mp3s; a 1 minute sample of 'Rathfriland...' being available
here., as IanC has pointed to in that link that Malcolm provided.

Sorry...but that's about all I can see of worth out there, at the minute.

B.

ard mhacha, John's site is indeed excellent, but he was offering it only as a way for you to contact him privately via email.

Where do you live, by the way? Members of the Sands family (who have recorded it, if you follow Martin's clicky) will no doubt be in strong voice at the Fiddlers Green festival, which should be under way right now, and for a week or two to come, at Rostrevor. You'd certainly pick up the lyrics there, but if you're in Australia, that probably isn't much help.

I listened to the excerpt and I was able to transcribe this much, for what it's worth:

"There's a spot that I love dearest
Sure I think I see it still.
It's that little town in County Down,
Rathfriland on the Hill.

Sure its brow is decked with em'ralds
Wild flowers around it grow.
When the sun does shine, it looks so fine
All in the …"

Also, I learned that "Rathfriland on the Hill" was recorded by Ruby Murray on her LP, "This Is Ireland," Fontana TL5444.

RATHFRILAND ON THE HILL
by Dan Rice from Mayobridge, about 1900

Oh, I have roamed over many lands, and many sights I have seen,
But none there are I could compare to my own dear isle so green,
And there's a spot that I love best; I think I see it still:
That little town in County Down: Rathfriland on the hill.

Chorus

It's ancient and it's beautiful; it is a lovely sight.
It's proudly situated upon that well known height.
Our fathers they were proud of it and we are prouder still,
Of that little town in County Down: Rathfriland on the hill.

Standing on its princely height, the view is far and wide.
You can see the purple heather on the Mourne Mountains side.
You can see the tower of Belfast and the far-famed Bessbrook mill,
From that little town in County Down: Rathfriland on the hill.

Its brow is decked with emeralds; wild flowers round it grow.
When the sun does shine it looks so fine all in a ruddy glow.
Our fathers they were proud of it and we are prouder still,
Of that little town in County Down: Rathfriland on the hill.

You may tread the road to Dublin and from that to Slievenamon.
You may cross the river Shannon and come back by the Bann,
But you will never find a grander sight, travel were you will,
Than that little town in County Down: Rathfriland on the hill.

If I were in Rathfriland, I would count myself at home.
It's there I would be contented, and would not from it roam.
I would call in Johnny Toman's and the glasses I would fill,
And drink a health to Ireland and Rathfriland on the hill.

If anyone is wondering about Rathfriland "on the hill". Rathfriland sits at the top of a very steep hill and to get to Rathfriland you definitely have to go up hill! it has a very distinctive water tower at the top from which you can survey a large part of mid and South Down and parts of Armagh."
