You can find words and chords at http://www.roughstock.com/cowpie This is a great source for country song lyrics. Go to w in index, then to Williams, Hank.

I'M SO LONESOME I COULD DIE Hank Williams

Hear that lonesome whipporwill He sounds too blue to cry The midnight train is whining low I'm so lonesome I could die.

I've never seen a night so long When time goes crawling by The moon just went behing the clouds To hide his face and cry.

Did you ever see a robin weep When leaves begin to die Like me he's lost the will to live I'm so lonesome I could die.

The silence of a falling star Lights up a purple sky And as I wonder where you are I'm so lonesome I could die.

It's "I'm so lonesome I could cry." That's the way Hank wrote, I think we oughta keep it that way.

Roger in Baltimore (who doesn't always believe in the "folk process")

You're right Roger, and I agree on this one (having checked to hear him sing it as well, since artists have been known to change their own songs).

No relation to the Everly Bro's hit?

Well I don't know. Which hit was that? Maybe we'll find out how the cry got changed to die, since there seems to be more than one of us who has heard the latter.

I can't say I ever heard it sung with DIE...Let's leave it at CRY for old Hank's sake...

Banj--You incredible dumbass...Haven't you heard the variant s to Hank's song???

Fat people are so lonesome they could fry.
Catburglars are so lonesome they could prise.
A menage a trois might be so lonesome they have a tri.
Compulsive shoppers are so lonesome they could buy.
Sociopaths are so lonesome they could lie.
Churchgoers are so lonesome they could tithe.
Pilots are so lonesome they could fly.

Take it Banj.......

catspaw

Has someone ACTUALLY heard "Die"????

The link to the COWPIE version above only serves
as another BAD example...and BASTARDIZATION
of a classic HANK WILLIAMS song
No such recording exists of Hank Williams...
Singing: I'M SO LONESOME I COULD CRY...
Using those Minors and /6th chords...

I'M SO LONESOME I COULD CRY
(Hank Williams)
as reprinted in The Songs of Hank Williams, New York, no date, pp. 78-79.

Hear that lonesome whippoorwill,
He sounds too blue to fly.
The midnight train is whining low,
I'm so lonesome I could cry.

I've never seen a night so long
When time goes crawling by.
The moon just went behind a cloud
To hide its face and cry.

Did you ever see a robin weep,
When leaves began to die?
That means he's lost the will to live,
I'm so lonesome I could cry.

The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky.
And as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry.

Spencer Bohren does a wonderful version of I'm so lonesome I could cry. If you get the chance, it's well worth a listen to.
