26 Jul 01 - 08:58 PM (#515462) Subject: RE: Tune Req: hobbie noble From: Malcolm Douglas At the time Bronson published his book, no tune had been found for Hobie Noble; that may still be the case. There is a possibility, however; speaking of the trilogy of ballads, Jock o' the Side, Dick o' the Cow and Hobie Noble, Anne Gilchrist (Journal of the English Folk Dance and Song Society, vol. III, no. 1, 1936) commented "...the three ballads are said to have been sung to the same tune". Said by whom she did not say, and it's a bit too obscure to speculate on here (it may have been a misunderstanding -Bronson seems to have thought so); however, Bronson does give four tunes for Jock and one for Dick, so in the absense of anything more concrete, one of them might do the trick for you. I can send you photocopies if you like; send me a personal message with your address. |
