Help me sing with Granny D

I am pround to live in the same region as Doris Haddock, "Granny D", who walked across America at the age of 89 to spread the word for campaign finance reform. Tomorrow afternoon she will be letting our congressman, Charles Bass, know how disappointed she is in his bait-and-switch on this matter (see the blue clicky I posted above) in a protest on our Central Square. If you were there, what protest songs would you sing?

Rosa's Daughters is a good one, you could modify the lyrics a bit to fit.

I, too, am envious, what an experience, such a remarkable womon!

Have fun and thanks for participating in an important event like this!

From: AllisonA(Animaterra)

Well, I got inspired and wrote this little ditty. Dunno if I'll use it. Now if I could just remember the melody to the verses!

DO RE MI
by Allison Aldrich Cobb, with apologies to Woody Guthrie

1. Lots of folks up North they say
Call their rep every day
Ask him to do the honest work down in that old D.C.
Emails, faxes, and the phone
Telling him what must be done
They think he means just what he says,
But this is what they find-
At the end of a busy voting day,
Your congressman in Washington will say:

REFRAIN If you ain't got that do re mi, folks,
If you ain't got that do re mi,
You better go back to beautiful Concord,
Westmoreland, Claremont, Keene now, don't you see?
Now Washington's a garden of Eden
A paradise to work in or see
But believe it or not, you won't find it so hot
If you ain't got that do re mi!

2. If you want to let your voice be heard
Don't be silent, spread the word
Let the people know that this is a democracy.
Let the man who's been selected
Worry if he'll be re-elected
Or else just take this little tip from me.
Because I read the paper every day
Ahd even on NPR here's what they say: REFRAIN

That's excellent, Allison! Sing it! I PM'd you about Rosa's Lovely Daughters. It's in a thread of the same name. Oh and the tune is Will the Circle Be Unbroken or close enough, but sung in a rousing way.

Thanks, Kat. What a great song! I may not learn it in time for today, but I think my chorus just might have to sing it!

It sounds fantastic with chorus, Allison. Great choice!

Well, I did it- I sang in front of about 75 people, with a lousy sound system (not mine) but Granny D loved it! The most amazing compliment came from her son, after it was winding down. He told me that Pete Seeger had come to a signing Granny D gave for her new book, bought 15 copies saying it had changed his life, and he (Pete) wrote a song for Granny D. Her son said to me, "But your song is better than his!"

Don't let it go to my head- most of the song is Woody's!

Ah hell Allison, let it go to your head........Woody stole part of it anyway. And I got to say......I am both impressed with the compliment, your performance, and most of all with an EXCELLENT adaptation of Do-Re-Mi! A few changes and it works anywhere and a few more for any office including the one Dubya has! Simply GREAT!!!!!

Give yourself a big Spaw hug "on account" and I'll repay it when I see you!

Garsh, thanks, folks! I'm still feeling pretty good about it. It sorta launches my promise to myself to sing more on my own, rather than "just" making a career of helping other sing. "Just" in quotes since I know that what I do is pretty ok already- but I wanna sing, too!
So thanks.
