I hope this is the one you're looking for. This version of the lyrics is from the "Sons of Anachreon" website, and match pretty closely to what I remember hearing in pretty much every version I've heard. Don't have the author, but I've been told it's Victorian era music hall or somesuch. It's not in the DT as of yet. I know there are also more verses... I could only find this one via google.

Jimmy Bean (What a Mouth)

Oh, Jimmy Bean was a funny looking fellow
If he had a bigger mouth, you'd've took him for the cellar
But his mouth--
Queered him-
From winning a beauty show

Oh, it was like a steam boat funnel,
Or a railway arch,
Or the Blackwell tunnel,
And you can't-
See Jim-
When he opens his mouth, you know.

And as old Jim goes a-walkin' about-
You can 'ear the kids all 'ollerin' out-

Chorus:
What a mouth, What a mouth,
What a North and South
Blimey, what a mouth he's got.
When he was a baby Low Cor Lummer
His poor old mother used to feed 'im with a shovel
What a gap--
Poor chap--
He's never been known to laugh
For if he did, it's a penny to a quid
That his face would fall in 'alf!

A Harry Champion song, I think.  He was born William Crump in Shoreditch in 1866, and after a brief career as Will Conray went on to achieve great success with songs like Boiled Beef and Carrots and Henery the Eighth until his death in 1942.  I feel sure I have more of this song, but I'm damned if I can remember where...

I've got a longer version that includes Jimmy's death, from falling asleep in the road and having a coal deliveryman mistake his mouth for a coal chute. I think there may be another verse or two... alas, a good chunk of my CDs are still in storage. I've NO idea where the disc is...

I did sort of learn this from the singing of John Roberts and Tony Barrand on the previously mentioned album. Here are more verses I remember.
DANGER: Possible Folk Process at Work! These a quite likely to be a bit off.

Please note also, I've made no attempt to write in Cockney because I don't know how to speak Cockney (although I can understand a bit) and would mess it up.

_____? (I mumble this bit when singing in the car)low cor lummer
He can whisper in his own ear, ain't it funny
And you can't
See Jim
When he opens his mouth you know

He got so drunk one foggy morn
That he laid in the road and he started to yawn
And a poor
Old man
Was delivering coals close by
And as he went to shoot his load
He saw Jim's mouth out in the road

Now this old man being a short sighted fellow
He saw Jim's mouth and he took it for a cellar
And he shot
The lot
Right into his mouth, no joke
Now Jim poor soul's got a belly full of coal
And he coughs up lumps of coke - OY!

" A cockney music hall song, is somewhat streamlined from the original, which was written by R.P. Weston in 1906. It was sung by Harry Champion who made famous 'Any Old Iron' and 'I'm Henry the 8th I am' I think our version came from Tommy Steele." That's all he wrote about it. If anybody has any other info about the song, please email it to me. my email addy is glovercymru@yahoo.com thanx! steph

Ah, Jeri, you beat me to it. Serves me right for going to Denver to bring my daughter back for two weeks on the island...

The way I heard the first line of that verse is, "Oh, a mouth so large, cor, Lord, cor, lummy" -- maybe some of our English friends can tell us whether that makes sense to them. And a very minor correction: On John and Tony's version, after "coughs up lumps of coke" there is a cough. The "OY!" or "'EY!" or syllable to that effect comes at the very end of the song. Otherwise, spot on.

Aloha,
Mark

I found my version, off of a Canadian CD by the name of "English Pub Sing-A-Long" (go fig). It's got several verses that aren't up here, but I'm going batty trying to decipher the choral sections... If I get the white bolt of inspiration that allows me to cut through muddy arrangements, I'll be able to post the full version I have. Most of the above verses are in it, though, with a couple others (one about a barmaid, though for the life of me I've no idea what about her).

G'day Mark,

Of course, that is Cockney - approximating "Oh, a mouth so large, God, Lord, God, love me" - Well, it is according to the Oxford Dictionary equating "cor" with "God" ... But I always took it as (imperfect) rhyming slang for "Lord" (Lord ... Lor' ... cor ...) but then that makes the line "Oh, a mouth so large, Lord, Lord, Lord, love me"...

Bob Bolton

And now it's happened! Or nearly...

Please, tell us more about your great-grandfather, if you don't mind. Did he write other songs? (And did he make guitars?)

Both of these songs were actually written by : WILLIAM TOM WOOTTON - which were both one-off creative situations - from his visits to Music Hall and pubs with his friends-where they enjoyed regular sing-songs after work. He was CHURCH STAINED GLASS WINDOW RESTORER - who only loved music and played for pleasure and relaxation at home and with friends. He was born 29-05-1863 - Kilburn but family moved to Poplar. He sold the songsheet rights to both songs for One Shilling - he didn't see his career in music - they were just two inspirationals as a one-off situation. He was very proud and honoured that his songs were wanted at all! He died in 1951 and this matter was often spoken about - he never ever expected his songs to endure as they do. He was VERY proud that they did. He spent his last years with his family in GRAYS Thurrock and JOE BROWN often comes to local Thameside Theatre and even sang the songs! He knew Harry Champion from the music halls. He continued music at home for family and friends throughout his life. He wasn't a business man in any way and did not forsee how thse two songs would become part of cockney foklore. So, he sold all rights for the Shilling - and made good use of that. It is local legend now and known as absolute truth. He also had a choir called THE SINGING GRANDADS - who raised money for charity - when he last lived in East End of London. He was a true community-family Soul.

Now Jimmy bean one night was snoring
and the neighbours all around thought a lion was roaring
when a big dutch clock that was hanging on the bedroom wall
fell from it's nail into his big mouth, wallop
Jim awoke and cried send for Dr Jollop
said his wife, no fear you've swallowed the clock that's all

And when he's out well ain't it prime
folks look down his throat to tell the time

Wat a mouth.....

The word lummer mentioned earlier sonds like a word my Nan used to use but that was Lummey

After the neighbours look down his throat the song finishes with....

What a mouth, what a mouth, What a north and south
Blimey what a mouth he's got!

Well all night long that clock kept ticking,
Down in his tummy like a lot of sherbet fizzing!
And his wife,
What strife,
She can't sleep a wink - that's right!
Coz against his tum she can hear the pendulum
Going ticka-ticka tock all night!

(Thanks Mum!)

Enjoy!

Not even sure where I found this now, but the second verse seems to fit the tune better. Hope it helps. The reference to Lord Lovell would be what was once called a "minced oath", both for the rhyme (= shovell) and possibly for the benefit of the Lord Chamberlain.

Jimmy Bean (What a Mouth)

Old Jimmy Bean was a funny looking fellow
If he had a bigger mouth, you'd've took him for the cellar
But his mouth--
Queered him-
From winning a beauty show

Oh, it was like a steam boat funnel,

Blimey, what a mouth he's got.
When he was a baby, Oh Lord Lovell,
His poor old mother used to feed 'im with a shovel
What a gap--
Poor chap--
He's never been known to laugh
For if he did, it's a penny to a quid
That 'is face would fall in half…

What a mouth, what a mouth, Oh Lor, Oh Lumme
He can whisper in his own ear, ain't that funny,
And to quench
His thirst,
He takes a little drink you know,
He got so drunk one foggy night
He lay down in the road
Just as a poor
Old man
Came round delivering coal…

And as he went to shoot the load –
He saw Jim's mouth there in the road –

What a mouth, what a mouth,
What a North and South,
Blimey what a mouth he's got,
That poor old man bein' a short sighted fellah
Well he saw Jim's mouth and he took it for the cellar
And he shot

The various versions above demonstrate how a relatively simple verse can be altered over time by people mishearing the words. I do NOT claim that what follows is the definitive version but it is a true copy of the version sung by Tommy Steele according to the website (now disappeared) from which I copied it. I hope you would agree that without references to Lord Lovell (?) and the alteration from mouth to "race" (boat race = face) the lines make somewhat more sense. I have used onomatopoeia to convey the delivery, if not the sound, of Tommy Steele and Harry Champion. Tommy Steele took his calling seriously, taking every opportunity, before the death of Music Hall, to sit with the "greats" and learn all he could about timing and presentation. Anyway, here goes:

Oh, Jimmy Bean wos a funny-lookin' feller
If he'd 'ad a bigger marf (mouth) you'ld've took it for the cellar
But 'is race queered (stopped) 'im from winnin' a beauty show
Oh it wos like a steam boat funnel, or a railway arch or the Blackwall Tunnel
An' yer couldn't see Jim when 'e opened 'is marf yer know
An' as poor Jim goes walkin' abart (about), you can 'ear the kids orl 'oller and shart (shout)

Wot a marf, wot a marf, wot a norf (North) an' sarf (South), blimey wot a marf 'e's got

Wot a gap, poor chap - 'e's never been known ter larf

An' a pore ol' man wos deliverin' coals nearby
An' as 'e went to dump 'is load, 'e saw Jim's marf art (out) in the road,

Wot a marf, wot a marf, wot a norf an' sarf, blimey wot a marf 'e's got
Nar (now) the pore ol' bloke bein' a short sighted feller
When 'e sore (saw)Jim's marf, 'e took it for the cellar

I recently purchased from a car boot sale an old 78rpm Parlophone record No:R3953, feturing the Two Bills from Bermondsey, singing What a Mouth, written by R.T.Weston. My interest was researching who these two people were and what happened to them? I have not played this so do know the exact lyrics, but with the right equipment it could be transfered to CD, which unfortunately I do not have, but would be happy co-operate with this if it would help with your research and it would be great if Burl and your other repliers could also hear it, if this could be done?

I can add the 'barmaid' verse and part of verse two (when Jim was a baby):

Jimmy'd often need to wet his whistle
Down at the bar at the Rose and Thistle
With a thirst like his he'd drink a hundred pots

First a hundred pints of beer he'd swallow
And then cos his teeth at the back were all hollow
He'd still have room for a dozen or so rum tots

A new barmaid came there one night
She saw Jim's mouth and screamed with fright
WHAT A MOUTH .....

When she saw Jim's mouth the barmaid hollered
Cos a pewter pot he'd accidentally swallowed
It was hot, that pot, it melted and now he sits
Down by the fire with a little bit of wire
And hooks up two bob bits

AND.....can someone help me with this?

.....I'll never forget the morning he cut his first tooth
..................
.....took him to the chemist's, and it's the truth

They could not get inside the door
Till they shut that baby's mouth, Oh Lor'
WHAT A MOUTH ....

As baby's a-teething, said his mummy,
Please, sir, can I have a penny rubber dummy?
Said the cove, 'By Jove', as he sucked a big jujube
'There's no rubber dummy for a penny that'll fit
You need a tuppeny tube!'

"cor lumme" and "lor luvya" have nothing to do with any Lordship - this song is of and for the people (yay!) They are both corruptions of "Lord (i.e. God) love me" or "Lord love you".   If you enjoy seeing the full versions of cockney slang, read the scene in PYGMALION where Eliza speaks straight cockney slang in a polished upper class accent. "Lord love you" is there and other well known cockneyisms. There is a rumor that "bloody" is a contraction of "by Our Lady" and this in turn evolved into "bleeding" which at the time (up to about World War One) was a very shocking expression, as was "lousy" - not to be uttered in polite society. I suspect that the F-word may be on the brink of being considered merely emphatic rather than shocking and unacceptable in polite society, so now the question, and I hesitate to ask it, is: what will be next?????

I'm off now to research another song beloved of my Dad (who fought in that Great War) - he loved Harry Champion, Stanley Holloway ("With her head tucked underneath her arm ...")and whoever it was who sang "There was an old sow who had six little pigs ..."

It was Leslie Sarony in Suzanna's a Funicle Man I think you'll be referring to regarding the six little piglets. Difficult to write the words as you need snorting sounds. Seems to be a number of variations on the words, Leslie Sarony was a popular version. See thread 6787, though Sarony's words are a bit different from that.

The chorus to this song was a poem that I learned in childhood called "Epitaph on a Marf"
It says its written by anonymous. So I wonder if your song writer took that poem and expounded on it? Very interesting!
