BS: It's a Miracle!!

My daughter, now almost 20 and for all her life a stern and all-encompassing critic of folk music has experienced a conversion!!!!! I would like to pretend it's through the benign and gentle influence of her esteemed parent ( me, I mean) but actually it was getting to know a member of the band "Boys from County Hell", as talented a bunch as I've ever heard play and reminiscent of the wild and whacky Pogues but with a better lead vocal.

Still, however it came about, she has now eschewed her love of black, dog-collars and heavy, thrash, garage, mayhem rock ( or whatever it's called) and has taken up guitar and Childe.....it's a happy day!

Morticia,

I too experienced the same thrill when my son Gregory said "Uh, OK." to free tickets to The Battlefield Band in Ithaca NY and came back and wouldn't shut up about the experience for days. He still listens to the Industrial Rock but he also listens to Battlefield Band as well. He wants to play Mary Ellen Carte with me at an open mic and I distinctly heard him attempting my whistles.

The hext generation carries it on, hope springs eternal.

I was equally pleased when my 13-year-old pinched all my Fairport tapes. Living tradition lives...!!! - Ian

Of course now she'll tell you you don't know anything about folk music.

In which case she is of course more than welcome here to tell us all "What is Folk."

My little bratling is under no such illusions. She wanted to sing an SClub& song at the Jug, and sticks her hands over her ears when Manitas plays. However, she will stand and watch him play for dancing, but I think she has a crush on 2 of the other dancers....

Morty, I feel deeply for you. It was worth all those therapy sessions for her....

It's the "Winston Churchill" Syndrom again

At 18 he was appalled at how little his parents knew
At 21 he was amazed at how much they had learned in 3 years

So pleased for you Mortica --- she'll be on Paltalk next... *BG*

Know them well Morticia. I believe they played at the Kentucky Derby year. I used to play with the base player, Tony Green, thirty years ago. Great set of lads.

Re; the 20 yr old daughter - just keep telling yourself "I was a child bride, I was a child bride....."

And that should have been SClub7 for those who can't work out keyboards. If you don't know who SClub7 are, I can't help you.... find a teenager/pre-teen and ask them.

Oh, Morticia that's great! My two boys (19 and 17) have been exposed to folk music (mostly me singing) since they were little but don't show much interest. However, I have caught my older son playing some of my Irish CD's in his car and the younger one is experimenting with DADGAD guitar tuning. Your story gives me hope!

Although we may be having a breakthrough with the bratling - in the car yesterday, she prefered to listen to one of my tapes of Gill Burns, Nic Jones, Arlo Guthrie and Graham & Eileen Pratt over that bloody Disney nursery rhyme tape.... (jut as well, that tape went out the window somewhere down the M40 one day......)

She found out about the Disney tape.

She didn't have hysterics.....

Is there hope for us yet???
