Sounds interesting. I haven't a clue to offer (not in the DT) but where did you run across it?

I do, but it is an a capella song. Like a regular Shanty. I'll have to find a way to get it to you.

The Anti-Shanty chorus is something like:

Hose me down boys hose me down Throw me overboard and watch me drown Let the whirlpool suck me down Hose me down boys hose me down....Boys

Lyrics anybody?

Radriano--were you there when Sharon sang this at the July chantey sing? It was hysterical! Can you get the words from her? I can't remember where she said she got it.

Melani, I did ask Sharyn for the lyrics to "Hose Me Down." She doesn't have a computer at home so it will probably be a short while before I receive it. I'll post it when it gets to me.

Anybody know where Joe is these days? Still in Seattle? Still writing and singing? He is one hell of a songwriter. Say hello for me, please!

Aloha,
Mark

I talked to Sharyn Dimmick this morning. She will mail the lyrics to me so I should get them in a couple of days.

Sharyn had a friend e-mail this to me today. She'll still send me the lyrics via mail along with a cassette so I can post the melody too.

Hose Me Down
Written by two guys from Seattle (names to follow)

Chorus:
Hose me down, boys, hose me down
Roll me o'er, boys, and watch me drown
Let the whirlpool suck me down, boys
Hose me down, boys, hose me down

Now there's one thing makes me angry
Never fails to raise me ire
When I wake up in the morning
And me hair's been set afire, boys

Well, I thought I'd write a shanty
But I've never been to sea
But I've seen Moby Dick twelve times
And that's enough for me, boys

Well, I think I saw a sailboat
But I really couldn't say
'Cause I've never seen a sailboat
And it was very far away, boys

Now I'm sailing on a sailboat
With a captain good and true
If you ask what kind of sailboat
Well, I haven't got a clue, boys

Now the ship is mighty crowded
With a hundred men and me
Who would live with a hundred sailors
That is why I went to sea, boys

Richard

Thanks, Richard. Not quite as hysterical as some I've run across but perhaps them boys in Seattle don't have enough experience.

"Hose Me Down" was composed by Greg Scott & Joe Weihi.

Charlie, the lyrics themselves are not that funny - it's all in the delivery. Apparently, when it's done in Seattle all the chorus singers come in heavily on the word "boys" at the end of each verse. Then again, what goes over funny one time doesn't go over funny the next time. Much depends on the audience too, from my experience.

Hmm, with the chorus and the last verse it could be a bawdy song if sung by a female.

Hose me down, boys, hose me down
Roll me o'er, boys, and watch me drown
Let the whirlpool suck me down, boys
Hose me down, boys, hose me down

Who would live with a hundred sailors
That is why I went to sea, boys

Well, Brett, it could be a bawdy song if sung by the boys. Remember how we sing "Roll the Old Chariot":

A night with the boys wouldn't do us any harm,
A night with the boys wouldn't do us any harm,
A night with the boys wouldn't do us any harm,
And we'll all hang on behind!

Ah, now I remember hearing Greg and Joe do this! Part of the delivery was a longish pause before the "boys" at the end of each verse. And part of the fun was knowing Joe Weihe's longstanding opinion of shanties and shanty singers....

Aloha,
Mark

Well, I'm just about to go to the beach with my daughter, who's visiting for 2 weeks. (Closed the office today!) Now you guys have me homesick for both Seattle and San Francisco! Say hello to Sharyn, too, Richard, nice to see the west coast folk network is still running strong. Of course, as Faith always says, it's a worldwide network...and Mudcat is certainly good evidence for that. Sure makes it feel a little less isolated, here in the middle of the Pacific!

Aloha,
Mark

Joe W. and Greg S. of Seattle were the original authors of "Hose Me Down Boys" circa late 1980's
The song was first sung at Wooden Boat Show and consisted of five pleasant little verses
Over the years it has grown to over several hundred verses and it is proudly politically incorrect. You can find something to offend anyone in the long play version.
I my self have ten verses. John H has over 50 verses.
Those of us who were in on it originally are highly offended that some jackals recorded it.

IT WAS SUPPOSED TO REMAIN AN ORAL TRADITION!

Originally three conditions had to be met to sing it

1: The cloak of darkness
2: The fog of alcohol
3: The guarantee of anonymity

Some in the folk community have tried to clean it up make it more of a family entertainment.

This really was a travesty that has, to date, gone unpunished.

For those of you that ever heard the original one and half hour presentation, your lives forever remain unchanged

And no I wont send you the verses

No self respecting Hoser would ever do that.

I just heard this song the other night. That's a very nice melody--is it original to the song or did it come from somewhere else? The guys who sang it for us didn't know,

boys.
