Lyr Req: S.O.B.'s in SUV's

A fascinating song for our times, heard on "Car Guys" this morning. Anyone know it?

. . .Those S.O.B.'s
In their SUV's, tryin' to run over me,
When I try to drive my beat-up car.

At last, a song that reflects the soul of our generation!

Hi, Toadfrog - I'm wondering if it's the show I know as "Cartalk" - the show has had a few name changes. Click here for a list of songs played on the show recently, and here (click) for the full list. Could it be S.U.V. by Mem Shannon? Yes, it is - I listened to a sound clip at www.cdnow.com.

Joe, you are right, as always. Its Cartalk, and my memory is lousy. Sign of approaching old age. And I'm sure it must be S.U.V. by Mem Shannon.

Those are terrific songs the brothers use on their car show. Most of them are folk-related, if not exactly traditional folk. It's woth taking the time to look at the list. I'm still hoping somebody can post the lyrics to this song.

Not exactly traditional folk either, but David Lindley's "Sport Utilities Suck, Why Don't You Hand Up and Drive, You Blood Clot" probably left a lot of SUV owners hiding in embarrassment in the parking lot until the other drivers had left, after Lindley's concert in Victoria last night. What a Hoot! great song worth a listen also.

Lindley wrote the song after narrowly missing being crushed by a Lincoln Navigator on an Interstate.

S.U.V.

I don't make much money. My pay is way below average.
Can't afford no new car. Still driving my '71 Maverick.

She ain't too fast,
But she good on gas.
She ain't all that slow.
Takes me everywhere I wanna go.

Been seeing these new vehicles running round.
Ain't got no trunk and standing way up off the ground.

Now I know they was made for climbing mountains and driving in the snow,
But everyone I see trying to run over me when I'm driving to the grocery store.

I'm sick of these SOB's driving these SUV's
Trying to run over me when I'm in my beat-up car.
I'm sick of these SOB's driving these SUV's
Trying to run over me when I'm in my beat-up car.
Wait a minute.

I can remember when I could name every car on the road.
You had Cadillacs, Chevrolets, Buicks, Pontiacs, Lincolns, Chryslers, and Fords.

Now everybody's driving SUV's and they all look the same:
Mountain monsters, land-eaters, all kinds of old crazy names.

Now if my old car let's me down, or somebody ups and steals it,
I ain't wasting no time. Going straight to the top. I'm buying a 18-wheeler.

I'm sick of these SOB's driving these SUV's
Trying to run over me when I'm in my beat-up car.
I'm sick of these SOB's driving these SUV's
Trying to run over me when I'm in my beat-up car.

[Recorded by Mem Shannon on "Memphis in the Morning," 2001.]

Nice! I am reminded of a thing on TV talking about how unsafe SUVs are (especially rollover danger), and while they were interviewing somebody on the street - an SUV got into a fenderbender rolled over in the intersection! You hear the crash and see the interviewer react but it happens behind the camera. Still!
