If you try a search for:

You'll find a bunch.

Yes, that link seems to be dead. It was active up to a few months ago.

I recently came across a very early Orange Song Book - published about 1810. Given that the order was only founded about 1794, thiis was an interesting one. Its now in the Irish Traditioinal Music Archive - which rightly believes that what we have is ONE tradition - albeit a rather confused one!

Regards

p.s. Bruce O. Have you any record of Orange books of this period?

Hi,

I've got a book (used to by my grandfathers.. and probably his father's before him).. called "The Orange Standard - 18 selected songs in staff, sol-fa and words for community singing."... possibly put together by Richard Hayward

It looks old but I can't see a date on it price was 1'6 (and the copyright is Mozart Allan, 84 Carlton Place, Glasgow, C.5)

I used to have an even older one but it must still be in Belfast because I can't find it.....

Richard Hayward was born 1898 and died in 1964. His active period was from his production of "Ulster Songs and Ballads" (London, Duckworth, 1925) until the late 50s when he was making long playing records with Sean Maguire for the Scottish Beltona Label. I have always assumed that Orange Standard and Ireland Calling (similar formats) both published by Mozart Allen were issued in the thirties - neither is dated but Ireland Calling associates each song with Decca and Regal Zonophone catalogue numbers and their archives could provide more precise dates.

Alison,

I am very interested in what is in this collection, could you share its contents with us? While my interests run generally in the Republican direction (NO SHIT, MICK, REALLY??????) I am also very interested in the music of The Orange Order.

Just a little shameless sucking up here, folks, bear with me.***grin***

All the best,

Mick

Hi,

John .. thanks for the info.... I think the other book I "inherited"... was called "The Loyal Orange Songster."

Mick.. you know I can't refuse when you ask so nicely ... **grin**

the foreword says "to our many Irish friends who love their National songs so well, and justly so, we have pleasure of producing this new collection of their songs, entitled 'Orange Standard'."

No surrender
The South Down Militia
sons whose sires with William bled
Dan O'Connell in Purgatory
The sash me father wore
the sprigs of Kilrea
Derry's walls
the Battle of Garvagh
The orange and blue
The ould orange flute
the orange A.B.C.
The relief of Derry
The boys of Sandy Row
the Boyne water
the Protestant boys
Dolly's Brae
The green grassy slopes(of the Boyne)
Let him go let him tarry

I have to say that I have never heard any of the above done as "community singing" ......... the only one I have ever sung myself being "The ould orange flute"........ but some of the tunes are good...........

Big Mick, surely this IS some blatant sucking up on your part- I've a hard time picturing you knocking out a couple of verses of The Sash my Father Wore at Nallon's! :} LEJ

hahahahahahahahahaha..................Totally understandable, Leej. My politics on this matter are fairly clear cut and unwavering. But as a musician and performer, I am interested in both traditions of music. It has to do with being something more than another halfbaked Yank with no understanding of the real issues. And I believe that ones convictions should be able to stand being exposed to the antagonists songs as well. At any rate, it interests me. And anytime I can mix my interests with sucking up to the fair Alison, well all I can say is that it don't get anybetter than that

try this site The Ulster / Orange/ Unionist / Loyalist songbook

couldn't find one called "No surrender"... could the one you're looking for be "Derry's walls"??? with the chorus

Then work and don't surrender
but come when duty calls,
With heart and hand, and sword and shield
- we'll guard old Derry's Walls.

however I do remember the chorus being sung as

"we'll fight but not surrender"........
