Lyr Add: Glad That I Live Am I (L W Reese)

31 Jul 01 - 09:03 AM (#518296)
Subject: Lyr Add: GLAD THAT I LIVE AM I (L W Reese)
From: IanC

I was just adding the new Genres/Hymns subsection to the Basic Folk Library when I remembered this lovely little poem, set to music, in "Songs of Praise".

Glad That I Live Am I
(Lizette Woodworth Reese)

    Glad that I live am I;
    That the sky is blue;
    Glad for the country lanes,
    And the fall of dew.

    After the sun the rain,
    After the rain, the sun,
    This is the way of life,
    Till the work be done.

    All that we need to do,
    Be we low or high,
    Is to see that we grow
    Nearer the sky.

I haven't got the music (though I could sing it to you).

Cheers!
Ian

It's in the OLD hymn book 'Songs of Praise' - not the newer one to accompany the BBC TV show.

Thanks for posting this, IanC. As some others have said, isn't it amazing how just a few words and the memory of a tune can start a daisychain of so many vivid images of days long gone that had apparently been buried forever ? I can even taste the school milk that we drank out of pink plastic beakers....

And thanks "Cookieless Ian" for posting the extra lyrics. Have you looked at the rest of that website - lovely to see so many happy retired teachers !

cheers,
- jeanie

Just a bit of information about the writer of the poem and its history as a hymn.

Lizette Woodworth Reese 9-Jan-1856 to 17-Dec-1935 Wrote quite a few books of poetry published from 1887 to 1936 (the last 2 retrospectively ... see link above).

"Glad That I Live Am I" was included in the 1st edition of "Songs Of Praise" (edited by DEARMER, Percy, VAUGHAN WILLIAMS, R., and SHAW, Martin 1925) as number 424.

It's pointed to in Oremus, but doesn't appear to be there, possibly for copyright reasons as the author died 1935 (which would mean that the words come out of copyright in 2010).

Yes, it is a real memory trip for me too - especially as I lived in a (then) tiny village in Hampshire (UK) and walked to school every morning down country lanes. Not a song for our current times though...

HEY! This IS a song for current times! We sang it when I was at Strand on the Green Infant and Junior School, Chiswick at my time there, 1965-72. I am now Director of Music at a large west London school. I have just woken up from a dream in which I was teaching a fellow musician this song. In the dream, he remembered it too after sang and played it from memory. (is this 'sad'? NO! I live music!) Thanks to the people on this website for recording these words! I will be teaching this song at my school next week.

Lovely little song - even at that tender age, seem to remember enjoying singing a hymn that isn't full of christian words.....

So has anyone got the other verses? I'm sure I remember singing more.

What a wonderful thread to find. Answered my question on copyright too ! I am planning a flower festival with the first line as the title and the hymn as the plan for the arrangements! Could anyone tell me if I need copyright permission for that - will not be using it in total as a hymn (until the Thanksgiving service on the Sunday)
(Yes I sung this hymn at Down Lane junior school Tottenham !!)

I remember a final verse from primary school days (1958-62) in Songs of Praise:

'God comes down in the rain
And the crop grows tall
This is the country faith
And the best of all.'

I only recognise the first verse of Ian C's version, but that could be memory failure. Maybe S o P had more than one edition.

Was looking out at the grey skies and thinking how gloomy the world looked. like a beacon in the night this litle gem surfaced from a vault deep within my memory and lit up my world; a wonderful little song that I used to sing in the junior school during the fifties.
Simply had to look it up on the internet and found it here... Many many thanks.. Brian

We sang this also in the nineteen fifties, in New Zealand, though maybe not the extra verse. I can't be sure now but will check with a friend who always seems to know the words of songs. I did like it better than Jesus wanting me for a sunbeam at Sunday School. Enjoyable thread, thank you, best wishes to all,
Julie

Me too!!! What a wonderful little song, and like you conjure up many memories of childhood in the late 40s...great to see so many remember it.
I sent the words to a freind of mine and this is what she said;

Oh, Jack, this song was such a favourite of mine down the years and I've sung it so much. The melody is just as beautiful. I'm singing it now

We sang this at infant school in the fifties and early sixties but I remember slightly different words:

Glad that I live am I
That the sky is blue
Glad for the country lanes
and the fall of dew
After the sun the rain
After the rain the sun
This is the way of life
'til our days be done
All that we see and do be it low or high
Is to see that we grow nearer the sky.

It only occurred to me as an adult that it has a message about life apart from being a country hymn. We have periods of sun and rain throughout our lives, one following the other. And everything we encounter and all our actions ultimately allow us to grow nearer Godhead.

Apart from that it's a very positive and uplifting song. It had a profound influence in my formative years - I loved singing it - and it's probably responsible for my lifelong optimism!

I want this song sung at my son's christening, he's 9 years old, disabled and loves music. This little song is appropiate for him as he really loves his life. Does anyone know where I can get hold of the music for the organist to play please?

I too remember this at primary school and in "Songs of Praise". I also remember line 8 as "'til the work be done" which IMHO is better.

It's incredible how a few lines of verse can plonk you back behind a battered and ink-stained desk! How about "Pippa's Song" by Robert Browning?

The year's at the spring,
And day's at the morn;
Morning's at seven;
The hill-side's dew-pearl'd;
The lark's on the wing;
The snail's on the thorn;
God's in His heaven —
All's right with the world!

I used to like that Primary School song, apart from it being very short.
We used to have a large scrolled song sheet hanging above the whiteboard(?) in the new assembly/dining room. 1966/7.

I was watching the birds in the garden during this last winter and suddenly thought "I'm glad to be alive" and then started singing this little hymn... but i got stuck with the last two lines of the musical score and how the words fitted. Thank you to all who have commented & posted here.

Peace, Love & Light to everyone.

Oh joy! What lovely memories from Hayes Park Infants in 1953! (Middlesex UK), Mrs Williams on the piano. Does anyone remember a hymn from the same era that began "Daisies are my silver, Buttercups my gold, These are all the treasure we can have or hold" ?

Had forgotten Daisies are our silver but have rembered it now but not with the same amount of affection that I have for Glad that I live.

I was singing this in the happy days at school when the writer was still living - 1934 !!I think it was in the earliest 'Songs of Praise'. The words of the first line suddenly came into my head this morning -June 2012 - and I had to check on the Internet to recall the rest of the words.As a little girl, I always thought I had a harder task than most of my classmates to " grow nearer the sky " because I was very short anyway. (I am still only 5 foot!)

I've always loved this song, since hearing it sung at morning assembly in Paddington (London) Lower School in the 1970s. Now in my eighties and busy with preparation for the ceremony preceding my body's entry into the urn, inspiring memories of vibrant young voices streaming out of that gaunt Victorian building's high-set, tall and narrow windows and brightening the lives of Harrow Road wayfarers as they flow. come creeping back.
   I'd very much like to have an adapted version of Lizette Reece's world-linking song performed at my funeral. Would I need to apply to the L W Reece estate for permission? Can you help me out here, Leo?
   And many thanks to IanC for starting this thread. I bet you never thought ... ...
