This month's Acoustic Guitar magazine: cover, interview, tabs of "Red Dirt Girl". As a public service, of course...

Well,

I've listened to Red Dirt Girl a number of times in the last few weeks. An esteemed Mudcatter had told me that although he is a big fan of Emmylou and really likes Wrecking Ball, he doesn't like Red Dirt Girl.

I meant to PM him to say that he should give it a few more listens, I've found it to be very good. Wrecking Ball was her and Daniel Lanois interpreting other people's songs. I like the fact that most of the songs on Red Dirt Girl were penned by Emmylou. I think she has written some very good songs for this CD. Of course, with that voice she could sing Motorhead songs and they would sound wonderful.

Hey, Steve, is this like a subtle reference to me? I gave it a couple of listens and then gave up. They were all so alike, and dreary, pale Lanois-like arrangements over and over. But I worship at the shrine. Glad she is out there working away, given the dreck around her. The interview in Acoustic Guitar is very interesting: she is just so intelligent about what she does. I wish she would write an autobiography. I will give the album another listen, after I finish my 10th listen to this couple of Dylan albums that an esteemed Mudcatter got into my hands.
yours, Peter T.

I will be hotfooting it to Borders immediately to pick up a copy.

Emmylou can do no wrong and is beyond criticism. So let's have NO MORE negative remarks regarding Ms Harris. :-)

(Except for that appalling duet she did with Dick Gaughan, of course. That really sucked .......)

Peter,

Me, subtle? Never. Okay it was you that I was thinking about, I had RDG in the CD player over the weekend and there are a number of songs that I really like. I must confess that when I first got Wrecking Ball I was turned off by what I thought was over production. I played it a few times and didn't listen to it for ages. I just happened to play it for Karen one night and sat and really listened to it and gave it another chance. It has become a favourite of mine. I wouldn't be surprised if you had a similar experience with Red Dirt Girl.

Listening to Bob is an acceptable excuse for not getting around to Emmylou though.

We recently watched a docu she did on Edinburgh. It was really wonderful; she was so at ease and natural, no phony cutesy crap and she hit some great highlights about the history of the place. It was well done and very interesting.

Be still my throbbing heart.Oh Emmylou.

I really enjoyed Wrecking Ball when it first came out.I recommended it to everyone I knew and told them to play it LOUD.When Spyboy came out I liked it also, realizing that it was her musicians taking the Lanois experience to live concerts.I was at first alittle put off by Red Dirt Girl because of the continued Lanois influence, but without him. The more I listened to it, the more I was drawn to it.

I haven't seen the AG article yet, but it is the second time they have done a cover article on Emmylou. It was from a letter in response to the first one that I found out I had gone to the same high school she had.I immediately got out my annual for the one year I was there, but alas no picture of Emmylou as a teenager.

A couple of years ago we had her at Strawberry Music Festival and I was able to talk to her after her set, annual in hand. When I asked her to sign it,she said she wasn't there then.We did find her brother,Lin, in the sophmore section.I then found out we had both been in the same elementary school though she had been two years behind me.

She signed my annual.
