This was sort of touched on recently but...Often when performing at weddings & historical type gatherings a toast or a blessing is called for, I know a few but would be interested in adding a more. I am especialy in Scottish & Irish types that would be appropriate for Ren fairs & colonial times. but wouldn't mind others have you folks any ideas? As always thanks for your help,Charcloth

There are good ships, and wood ships
And ships that sail the sea
But the best ships are friendships
And may ours always be !

I saw that one on a glass somewhere.

There used to be a toast in the South Wales Miners Federation (the'Fed)

"To the day the last man, left the last pit, on the last shift."

Unfortinately it became true.

A couple I like....

Here's to the game they call ten toes
It's played all over town
The grils all play with 10 toes up
The lads with ten toes down

Here's to the ships of our navy
And the women of our land
May the former be well rigg-ed
and the latter be well manned!

Gentlemen, I bid you, a toast to our wives
Who make our lives complete
Drink to those women who love us well
so beautiful and sweet
May God grant this wish
the twain shall never meet!

"Here's a health to the companyand to my lass
let us drink and be merry all out of one glass
let us drink and be merry all grief to refrain
for we may or might never all meet here again"

Cheers

Char, it's not really a great skill... just get Google and type in your request. Then, to refine, go to the bottom of the page and hit the Search results button........it's the mind set that is different. Different ways to ask for the same thing....different phrases or combinations of words.

An old Cavalry toast
"Here's to horses and Women...And the men who ride 'em"

Or a toast in four parts (apologies to all Scots for the attempt at writing in accent"
"Here's tae us"
"Wha's like us"
"Damn few"
"An' their a'deed"

May the best time you've ever had be the worst time you will ever see.

I always liked the old May those who love us love us. And those that don't love us, May God turn their hearts. And if He doesn't turn their hearts, May he turn their ankles, So we'll know them by their limping. which I had on a plaque somewhere. It's on that Irish page, thanks, Sorcha. But that is more for a house than a wedding. When I was Best Man at a friends' wedding I tried the old Arab May blessings heap upon you and your children and your children's children and your children's children's children, and Yea unto all the issue of your house, but I didn't get past children's children as I teared all up.

I once heard this toast, it's not terribly serious, but it made me smile then.....
'Good wine, Good meat, Good God! Lets eat!

There is a Cornish one reaclled on a radio programme recorded in 1979 by Rev R.S.Hawkers Godson, It is ratehr long winded and again humorous, I'll try and remember it!

May the sun shine bright upon your face May the wind be at your back May the road rise up to meet you With a loud resounding THWACK!

and the other Irish blessing:

'Til we meet again, may the good lord hold you in the palm of his hand...

...an' squeeze ya til the piss runs out yer ears!
