BTW, Judy Collins and Tom Paxton will also be appearing at the 40th annual Philadelphia Folk Festival the same weekend (August 27-29), though I'm not sure who's playing when.

And Tom Paxton is doing a mainstage concert, a songwriters' workshop, a family concert, a duet concert with Anne Hills and the finale at the Champlain Valley Folk Festival this weekend.

BS Don? You gotta be kidding! What a great show that'll be. Two years ago I was in the same elevator with richie Havens at the Folk Alliance. He was wearing a very snappy business suit. We were all dying to ask him "Where's your Dashiki"!!

You are right Rick this is definately not a BS topic but the short cut I used goes to a page that has no concert listings available.

I am looking forward to this show very much. A chance to see and hear the people who started me along the road to a lucrative future in fok music is not to be missed. How well I recall sitting in the Regents Theatre at Syracuse University in 1967, 68, 69 and being wowed by a balding guy in a work shirt and a Martin guitar.

"Goodman and Schwerner and Chaney" still brings chills to me and I can just as easily recall the photos in Life magazine of the defendants and cops sitting on the benches in the court room sharing chews of Redman tobacco.

I can't say that many people have affected my memories as much.

Saw him and Anne Hills in Evart, MI. They were both good individually doing their own stuff, but they didn't quite seem as sparky doing duets. Mind you, it was pretty hot that day, so maybe they were just a bit frazzled on stage!

Here's another hint. If you buy your day G.A. pass in advance to the NYS fair it cost's $4.00 to get in. If you buy it at the gate it costs $8.00 to get into the fair. This concert is included FREE as part of General Admission. I'm told there are a number of off sites to park and take a bus to the fair and that this is much esier than trying to find parking near the fair and walking in. Just an FYI. Hope to see you there ! There is a constant buss service to and from the Fair all day. I believe that all the major malls are bus stops for fair shuttles. The local P&C Groceries carry presale tickest in their service areas.

$4.00 for two shows and access to Hot Sausage and Boom Boom Barbeque sandwiches. Hmmmmm!

50 miles away & I've never been to the State Fair. Maybe this is my year.

That's a Wednesday, right? How early do you need to be there to get into the 8:00 show. Is the 4:00 easier to get into? Maybe I can take the afternoon off. Where do I buy the advance purchase tickets?

Burke,

The seating for the Cole Muffler Court concerts are available to wander in and out off. You could get there at 7:55 and still be able to hear the 8:00 pm show if not see it very well. The earlier you get there the better the seating. There are aluminum bleacher type seats onnthe ground for a few hundred but I usually sit on the lawn and see and hear quite well. Saw Don McLean at the fair two years gone and it was a fine show. Did the 4:00 and 8:00 pm shows.

Contact me by E-Mail and I'll try to help you further.

Yikes! I just took a look at my earlier post on this thread... what calendar was I looking at?!? All three performers were at the Philadelphia Folk Festival THIS PAST weekend (August 24-26!) I missed Paxton's 1/2 hour showcase on Friday, but saw Havens and Collins last night.

Well, Richie Havens just blew everyone away. If he shows half that much energy at the NY show, you guys are in for a real treat! Someone had best keep him away from guitars on stands, though: at the end of his final number, he jumped up off his stool, strumming like hellfire, and knocked over not only the stool but a nearby guitar. I thought for certain that he would step on the guitar on the floor (he didn't, but it was close!). Fantastic showcase... and how the heck does he play with those huge rings on eight of his fingers, anyway???

Judy Collins, of course, had a much more laid-back set. Her voice is still remarkably clear, but the content and style of the showcase was pretty much like the show I saw her do at the Philly Folk Fest 15 years earlier (except that this time, it wasn't raining cats and dogs!). Also, this time, she didn't show off by singing and holding one note forever-and-a-day... just half-of-forever. A lot of the people in the audience were leaving during her show, but let's just say that if you like what she does, she won't disappoint.

I always say I am glad to be in the south. Wish like the dickens I could be at that concert. I saw Tom Paxton way way way back in the day when he participated in a folk festival in Ft.Lauderdale FL. I must have been 16 or so(y'all really dont think I am gonna tell you how long ago that was do you?) Tom sat on the ground under a tree and gave a lesson in writing and also some tips on playing too. He was such a nice fella, not in the least pretentious. He made us feel just like we had known him all along.

Mary,

No, not this time; real life intruded, I fear. I ended up going only for the day and evening on Sunday. But I had seen Utah Phillips a couple of years ago in a solo evening concert (also hosted by the Philadelphia Folksong Society), and he surely does put on a wonderful show.

Well after thinking I wouldn't make this concert at all, I got to sit through both shows. Anyone who saw the first show between 4:00 and 5:00 saw a dress rehearsal for the 8:00 show that went on untill 10:00 PM.

The first show was a little loose. It was apparent that neithre Tom Paxton or Judy Collins had the chance to warm up adequately. Richie Havens was a no show saddly.

Judy had a problem with her guitar during both shows but they were resolved and she played on. She broke a string with in the first two measures of Both Sides now at the opening of the first show.

Tom Paxton had Geoff Bartley as a side man. And if they weren't always together when they were it was proof what a tasty guitarist Geoff Bartley is.

The second set was much cleaner than the first and the first was really good, glitches aside. Judy Collins had a piano player who was just great. The name escapes me at the moment. She did mostly the songs on her Live At Wolftrap CD. She gave a guitar pick to someone in the audience and autogra[phed a program from the stage for an 11 year old girl.

Paxton pointed out it was an old fogeys show by bringing up Modern Maturity magazine in a song. He did a set of mixed old and newer stuff. Still can play, still can sing, still can write.

They finished the two hour second set with an ensemble sing of Ramblin' Boy and Wild Mountain Thyme. Tom dedicated a chorus of Ramblin Boy to John Hartford, Fred Neil and Mimi Farina. Standing ovations and encores all over the place. Afterward Tom came out and chatted and signed autographs.

Great show, free with the fair addmission. Reo Speedwago was in the GrandStand at $30.00 a pop. We got the better deal.

With some related info, here is part of an email I got today from John Wilmott at Celtic Ways:

...."With his hi-tech and folk singing skills Roger hit the road with a portable digital recording studio. On his travels he met up with Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Tommy Makem, Eliza Carthy, Judy Collins, Jean Ritchie, Odetta, Josh White jnr and digitized them into am amazing album just released on Appleseed called "Treasures From The Folk Den"

Quite a collection of American and Celtic folk songs are on the album ranging from Finnegan's Wake with Tommy Makem to Alabama Bound with Pete Seeger, and the English Waggoner's Lad with Joan Baez and Eliza Carthy.

Treasure's From The Folk Den is available from CDStreet.com

Roger McGuinn is currently on the US leg of a Judy Collins festival tour called "Wildflowers" which includes Ritchie Havens, Janis Ian (who was almost on our roster and still thinking about it) and a few other wonderful veteran folkies along the way."...............................................

Rcihie Havens a no-show? Darn! (Maybe he's still recovering from Sunday's Philly Folk Fest show; he did pour his all into that performance... and ain't none of us as young as we used to be). I'm so sorry that you guys missed him. Rats!!!!

I'll dig out the name of Judy Collins's piano player from the Fest program and post it later on. I didn't hear much of her guitar on Sunday; the sound was unbalanced and the guitar was nearly drowned out by the piano.

Too bad about Richie Havens being a no show.

CarolW: There's the Ian Tyson song called "Someday Soon":

There's a young man that I know
Whose age is twenty one
He comes from down in southern Colorado
Just out of the service, he's looking for his fun
Someday soon, going with him, someday soon.

Is this the one you're thinking of? If so, its in the DigiTrad.

CarolW, Judy did a couple of John Denver songs. I know she did Take me Home Country Roads & Jet Plane, did she do Rocky Mountain High as well?

Just about the same time I refreshed this thread on Monday, I checked the State Fair web site for information. I did not see Richie Havens listed then and was wondering why Don had listed him, but just figured there had been a program change.
