Two weeks ago I had to have my oldest Siamese, Heyokah, "my boy" put down. It is so hard when they have to leave us. I am sure she had a very good life with you and you will have wonderful memories of her to comfort you. Shambles is right, though, they are very much a part of the family and we have to let the grief come through, no matter what anyone might say or think. Indeed, pets are members of the family... except that they don't quarrel with you over holiday dinner, and you don't have to teach them to drive... Do try to remember what a happy life you and she gave each other. Amos, I used to feel the way you do about pet burial (back to the earth, and all that), until I had to have the first pet of my own put to sleep. Then I couldn't bear the thought of his body resting someplace I might move away from and couldn't come back to... so he's in a local cemetery, in the pet section (not far from where four of my family members are buried!), in a little casket with some of his favorite toys and treats and such... and a copy of a song I'd written about him years before. My two elderly dogs died the year after my mother and they are all bound up together in my memory. I had to wait two years and now we've got another dog called Aenghus, (ordinary spelling used at the vet's, I can tell you). After he'd been in the house five minutes, I found I'd stopped hearing my mum's bell and my other dogs' claws on the lino. Hope you feel less distressed soon, but you'll never forget... love Deni |

He's about 13 but has the skinny dalmatian legs and the fat labrador body on top of them!! He's getting a bit stiff now and it's getting a bit of an effort for him to stand up sometimes......I'm dreading the day when something happens to him. I got him 10 years ago when my husband died....we'd both taken the day off work to get a rescue dog for my birthday but my husband died that morning..aged 24. I still went out and got a dog of the type we both wanted so the link that Snowy has with my memories is strong. Below is a forward that a lady from US sent me recently....sorry it's long but I think it's lovely! A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them. After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother of pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?" "This is Heaven, sir," the man answered. "Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked. "Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up." The man gestured, and the gate began to open. "Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked. "I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets." The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book. "Excuse me!" he called to the reader. "Do you have any water?" "Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there" The man pointed to a place that couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in." "How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog. "There should be a bowl by the pump." the man said. They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree waiting for them. "What do you call this place?" the traveler asked. "This is Heaven," was the answer. "Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too." "Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's Hell." "Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?" I remember an old black-and-white Twilight Zone episode similar to Yvonne's story, about a mountain man and his hound dog who died while on a hunt, and were walking along in the grass. Not only did the snide devil-in-disguise-as-an-angel refuse the hound dog entrance into his realm, but the dog saw through him and snarled and barked at him. The real angel was a smiling young man in overalls, chewing on grass. As I recall, when the mountain man and dog were welcomed into the real heaven, the man asked how his aging wife back on earth was faring. The angel reassured him that she'd be all right, and also said she'd be coming along soon... and that the devil wouldn't fool HER! |

We had this nice lush tropical yard bursting with plants, with this one ragged patch of desert. I found it comforting, as if the earth were mourning too... Probably just evidence that the neighbors had, indeed and as we suspected, poisoned him. My thoughts are with you and yoru Mom, Dorrie, this is very sad all around. |

It makes me think of our first dog, Ben. As kids we could do a lot with him and he wouldn't object unless it involved trying to steal his bone. I mainly picture him in later years perched on a chair looking out the window just in case anyone had the temerity to walk on his field. I miss him greatly. When my darling Sara Monday died we were living in rural country where dogs were given short shrift, and there was no one to understand how important she was to me and how devastating her death was...she was not quite 6.
