What makes this so difficult is that well meaning folks can make you feel that you should some how feel less of a loss than say if it was a loss in the family.

This is nonsense of course as they are very much one of the family.

I know how you feel..........

OH, dorrie, I am sorry for you and your mum. Two weeks ago I had to have my oldest Siamese, Heyokah, "my boy" put down. It is so hard when they have to leave us.

I am sure she had a very good life with you and you will have wonderful memories of her to comfort you. Shambles is right, though, they are very much a part of the family and we have to let the grief come through, no matter what anyone might say or think.

Maybe this will help a little: Rainbow Bridge

In Sympathy,

Well, try and plant her somewhere useful -- say, in an orchard or flower bed.

So it won't just go for naught....

Dorrie, I'm so sorry for your loss. Indeed, pets are members of the family... except that they don't quarrel with you over holiday dinner, and you don't have to teach them to drive... Do try to remember what a happy life you and she gave each other.

Amos, I used to feel the way you do about pet burial (back to the earth, and all that), until I had to have the first pet of my own put to sleep. Then I couldn't bear the thought of his body resting someplace I might move away from and couldn't come back to... so he's in a local cemetery, in the pet section (not far from where four of my family members are buried!), in a little casket with some of his favorite toys and treats and such... and a copy of a song I'd written about him years before. I guess one needs to do what one must in order to find the greatest measure of peace. Dorrie, I hope you find that, too.

With sympathy,
SharonA

Three years ago I lost a yellow dog to cancer, this poem hit me hard. For those who think I hate everything, read this.

Yellow Dog

You keep your lofty abstract god,
Myself, I choose a child of Pan,
An ordinary yellow dog
Who does for love what mortals can,
Who stretches out her mortal frame
Determinedly, although she's lame
For one more walk beside her man.

Whose ashes grace the forest way
We roamed together yesterday.
And, to the wilder god I pray:
Give her soul some woods to run,
A stick to fetch, a patch of sun.
And near her, Pan, preserve a place
For me, come from a lesser race.

Aw, I'm so sorry Dorrie. We just lost our turtle, whose name was "Frog" and I've got to bury him tomorrow. Funny how attached you get to these durned critters isn't it. It doesn't matter how old you are and how many pets have gone on before. You still miss even the most lowly of them.

Lots of love,

Bert.

Sorry to hear about your dog, Dorrie. And the poem Yellow Dog nealy made me cry too. My two elderly dogs died the year after my mother and they are all bound up together in my memory. I had to wait two years and now we've got another dog called Aenghus, (ordinary spelling used at the vet's, I can tell you).

After he'd been in the house five minutes, I found I'd stopped hearing my mum's bell and my other dogs' claws on the lino.

Hope you feel less distressed soon, but you'll never forget...

It is heartbreaking isn't it? We lost our labrador some years ago and I couldn't even go to work! Now we have Pebbles who is 13 and a bit of an old codger, but I will miss her desperately when she goes. If you feel at some stage that you want another dog, then remember the RSPCA at Clough Road and also the Dogs Home in South Cave, there are animals there that need you.

My sympathy to you too.....I've got a big old labrador x dalmatian. He's about 13 but has the skinny dalmatian legs and the fat labrador body on top of them!! He's getting a bit stiff now and it's getting a bit of an effort for him to stand up sometimes......I'm dreading the day when something happens to him.
I got him 10 years ago when my husband died....we'd both taken the day off work to get a rescue dog for my birthday but my husband died that morning..aged 24. I still went out and got a dog of the type we both wanted so the link that Snowy has with my memories is strong.

Below is a forward that a lady from US sent me recently....sorry it's long but I think it's lovely!

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother of pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold.

He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out,
"Excuse me, where are we?"
"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.
"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.
"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up."
The man gestured, and the gate began to open.
"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.
"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."
The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed.
There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.
"Excuse me!" he called to the reader. "Do you have any water?"
"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there" The man pointed to a place that couldn't be seen from outside the gate.
"Come on in."
"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.
"There should be a bowl by the pump." the man said.
They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree waiting for them.
"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.
"This is Heaven," was the answer.
"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said.
"The man down the road said that was Heaven, too."
"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's Hell."
"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"
"No. I can see how you might think so, but we're just happy that they screen out the folks who'll leave their best friends behind."

love and best wishes, Yvonne

Our two largest goldfish expired while we were on holiday to the distress of the neighbour who was keeping an eye on the garden. As the mortality (thanks to herons, crows as well as natural causes) of our fishpond is regular I wasn't too upset but Herself claims she misses their individual personalities! Kendall and Yvonne, and kat too, thank you all for posting those moving stories and verse. I remember an old black-and-white Twilight Zone episode similar to Yvonne's story, about a mountain man and his hound dog who died while on a hunt, and were walking along in the grass. Not only did the snide devil-in-disguise-as-an-angel refuse the hound dog entrance into his realm, but the dog saw through him and snarled and barked at him. The real angel was a smiling young man in overalls, chewing on grass. As I recall, when the mountain man and dog were welcomed into the real heaven, the man asked how his aging wife back on earth was faring. The angel reassured him that she'd be all right, and also said she'd be coming along soon... and that the devil wouldn't fool HER!

When I found our dog dead at (my) age 20 or so, it was terribly hard on me... we buried him in our back yard and planted a rose bush over him, and for the rest of our time in that house (years), ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, not even grass, would grow over his grave. We had this nice lush tropical yard bursting with plants, with this one ragged patch of desert. I found it comforting, as if the earth were mourning too... Probably just evidence that the neighbors had, indeed and as we suspected, poisoned him.

My thoughts are with you and yoru Mom, Dorrie, this is very sad all around.

This thread has gone right to my own sentimental core, hidden behind the miserable sod. It makes me think of our first dog, Ben. As kids we could do a lot with him and he wouldn't object unless it involved trying to steal his bone. I mainly picture him in later years perched on a chair looking out the window just in case anyone had the temerity to walk on his field. I miss him greatly.

Dog, its such a small word but they're such a big part of your life.

Cheers

Dorrie,

My sympathy. Our Buster Brown was killed several years ago and we buried him and planted a beautiful dark lilac over him. Every time I look at it I think of him. His mother is still with us but getting on. 14 1/2.

Yvonne, I really like that story. I got it from my mother a couple of months ago and, I must admit, think of it often, particularly given the number of pets that are waiting for me. (mostly cats)

Hugs!

Dorrie, I'm so sorry. My good friend Willie-dog, after almost 5 years of prolonged puppy-dom (we didn't think we could keep him, he was so high-maintenance!) is settling into a really wonderful, friendly , irreplaceable member of the family. He'll be my buddy after my kids are launched in a few years.
I give you a prayer that is also one of my favorite bumper sitckers:
Lord, make me as good as my dog thinks I am!

Knowing that it's coming is quite a different thing from knowing that she's gone. No need to shift blame; it's okay to miss her!

Every so often I tell my healthy, spirited 13-year-old cat that I'll miss him when he passes away, even though I hope that day won't come for years yet.

I suppose a few of our friends will be waiting for Karen instead, but we'll all get together in the end. I'll be looking forward to my little pack of Weimaraners trotting along beside me and sleeping with them all piled around up close. Gretchen, Fawnie, Taffy, Magda...........and if it happens that I precede him, we'll all hang around and wait for Jaeger.

........and it's time to get back in the fray! Are you looking for another friend yet?

So sorry, Dorrie, about your dog. That is the only trouble with these guys, they just don't live long enough. When my darling Sara Monday died we were living in rural country where dogs were given short shrift, and there was no one to understand how important she was to me and how devastating her death was...she was not quite 6. I love dearly every dog I've got (all three are at my feet). I miss sorely every dog I've lost (they are all in my heart.)

My heartfelt condolences...
