Sounds like a variant of that "marvellous" song..."Two Little Boys", so movingly sung by Rolf Harris.

I think BruceO mentioned this broadside version in a discussion about "Two Little Boys" some time ago (must have been years). Unfortunately, there are so many threads relating to the song that I haven't been able to find it!

Beaten to it again! Oh well, never mind. Wonder if we'll turn up any more like it.

My great grandmother used to sing this song to me. These lyrics are slightly different form the ones that I know, but I wanted to to thank you to all that contibuted to this search. To some of us memories of songs are all we have left of those we love.

The link given above is now invalid.

To find the song now, you can go to the Lester Levy search page and search for Little and Boys (In the first two search keys)

From the sheet music at The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music (see Pavane's link above):

TWO LITTLE SAILOR BOYS
Words, Edward Madden. Music, Dolly Jordon.
New York: Jerome H. Remick & Co., 1906.
Date:

1. Two little chaps with sailor caps
Played at a game of war.
Two wooden chips for battle ships,
Bravely they sailed from shore.
One little boy reached for his toy,
Fell in the deep blue sea,
But his comrade true cried, "I'll rescue you,
And some day you may save me."

CHORUS: Don't forget when we were sailor boys,
Ship ahoys,
Sharin' joys.
Remember then our battleships were only toys,
When we were two little sailor boys.

2. Years took their flight. two ships one night
Fought on the raging sea.
Each captain true, leading his crew,
Strove for the victory.
One sinking fast clings to a mast,
While from the ship nearby,
The captain so brave, strikes out o'er the wave,
And his comrade hears him cry.

Do you know where I could find a recording of this song?
