04 Aug 01 - 07:06 AM (#520884) Subject: Stan Hugill 'Sea Shanties' From: Michael in Swansea I'm after a copy of Stan Hugill's "Sea Shanties" this is not to be confused with "Shanties from the Seven Seas". Anyone got a reasonably priced spare they don't want? What is a reasonable price? I paid £45 for my 1961 copy of "Shanties from the Seven Seas" I thought that was a good price. I don't expect to pay as much as that though. I'm going home now and won't be back on line until Monday so anyone replying, please be patient, I'll be back. (did I sound like Arnie then?) Mike

I think Charley Noble has a copy and can address that better. He is camped out at the Maine Arts Festival this weekend so you may not see his input till Sunday night or Monday. It's worth a try rather than hoping for it to appear in a book sale. |

Why I'm an ex is my business but suffice to say I spent 24years in 'public service'. Stan Hugill's second book the one we are referring to it not his 'magnus opus' the one we are talking about is ( I believe) a paperback and I know for a fact the library authority I worked for bought multiple copies. I am merely informing Noreen of a route to acquiring which I know lots of other people take whether she takes this route is up to her but in no way does it mean I am condoning theft. It's a point of weighing up options. |

Surely, the entire point of a library is to allow a huge amount of resources to be made available to everyone regardless of their financial circumstances. Pretending to have lost a book, and then keeping it for yourself (especially if it's out of print) is to my mind totally wrong and totally selfish. I really can't see where options come into it. There is some overlap with Shanties of the Seven Seas but many more ballads and many more shanties in forgeign languages (with translation). There is also a wealth of graphics to pillage for newsletters and posters. I've been amazed and gratified to the used books I can find at affordable prices on the web, books that I've been looking for for years. I now have my own working copies of C. Fox Smith's three books of sea poems to drool over...mine, mine, mine and I'll share them out as songs when I'm done with them.;-) |

I've never found any proof of that, and it may have started with one person saying "I think 'moke' may mean..." and then a bunch of other people saying "I heard it means..." Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language, copyright 1966 contains: Moke [pers. name Moke, applied as pet name to the donkey], [Slang], 1. a donkey; hence, 2 a dull, stupid person. Now, I haven't met anyone else who remembers the term, but I swear I heard folks use the term 'jamoke' when I was growing up in upstate NY. When I first heard 'moke', I thought it was a shortened version of that. 'Jamoke' seemed to be a friendly insult more than a seriously bad name. |
