Help: Stan Hugill 'Sea Shanties'

Subject: Stan Hugill 'Sea Shanties'
From: Michael in Swansea

I'm after a copy of Stan Hugill's "Sea Shanties" this is not to be confused with "Shanties from the Seven Seas".
Anyone got a reasonably priced spare they don't want? What is a reasonable price? I paid £45 for my 1961 copy of "Shanties from the Seven Seas" I thought that was a good price. I don't expect to pay as much as that though.
I'm going home now and won't be back on line until Monday so anyone replying, please be patient, I'll be back. (did I sound like Arnie then?)

Mike

I believe "Sea Shanties" is only a selection of the songs in "Shanties Of The Seven Seas". I think Charley Noble has a copy and can address that better. He is camped out at the Maine Arts Festival this weekend so you may not see his input till Sunday night or Monday. I'll tell him about your thread when I see him later today.

I just borrowed a copy from my local library. Am intending to keep a look out at their next book sale in the Autumn to see if I can get it all for myself... I presume from Mike's post that it's out of print?

Try getting getting in contact with WWW.chanteycabin.co.uk

They have the seven seas book listed but not the other you mention, however they may be able to point you in the right direction or tell you more as shantys seem to be all they deal in.

Anyone wanting a songbook should really pay a visit to ABE Books as the disparity in prices has to be seen to be believed ...... some book sellers just don't know what to charge ( as I discovered when I picked up a copy of Songs of the British Isles for 50p because the cover was in a poor condition and the fly leaf was missing )

For me - as long as the contents are intact - the cheaper the better

BTW - putting "folksong" into the subject box brought up 720 hits of books - some of which I would give my eye-teeth for

I'd heard that this had been reprinted recently? I'm all for it. The more Hugill, the better.

Well I checked out the Mystic Site, they only Have Shanties from the 7 Seas @$19.95

I could not resist ordering a CD of Stan Live at Mystic Seaport $14.95 Went for the ground shipping so it will be a few days till I get it. A review will surely follow.

PS have you got the CD or record Blow, Boys Blow? Stan lauds this in the forward of Shanties from the 7 seas as being "authentic" shantying, some very funny songs as well. Nick

If the Advanced Book Exchange copy is sold before you get to it, and if other UK possibilities don't pan out, in the USA there is Ten Pound Island Book CO., which specializes in rare nautical titles. If they don't have it, they can search and notify you if they get it in. www.tenpound.com/retail.html, or e mail them at: tenpound@shore.net

Shouldn't really tell you this Noreen but you could always say you've 'lost the book' as an ex-librarian I can tell you that most library services will usually only charge you the cost of the book as a replacement (if still in print which it isn't) or the cover price plus sometimes admin charge or even a reduction for wear and tear. It's worth a try rather than hoping for it to appear in a book sale.

MC Fat,

I cannot believe you're an ex-librarian with that attitude (or maybe it explains the 'ex') What about the other people in Manchester who might want to borrow it (including me)?

It's a disgusting thing to steal from a library.

I'm sure you wouldn't even contemplate it, Noreen

Yes I am an ex-librarian but I don't have an attitude. Why I'm an ex is my business but suffice to say I spent 24years in 'public service'. Stan Hugill's second book the one we are referring to it not his 'magnus opus' the one we are talking about is ( I believe) a paperback and I know for a fact the library authority I worked for bought multiple copies. I am merely informing Noreen of a route to acquiring which I know lots of other people take whether she takes this route is up to her but in no way does it mean I am condoning theft. It's a point of weighing up options.

No, it's not a point of weighing up options.

Surely, the entire point of a library is to allow a huge amount of resources to be made available to everyone regardless of their financial circumstances.

Pretending to have lost a book, and then keeping it for yourself (especially if it's out of print) is to my mind totally wrong and totally selfish.

I really can't see where options come into it. It's wrong period

Mike, glad you've been able to find a working copy of Sea Shanties on the internet. There is some overlap with Shanties of the Seven Seas but many more ballads and many more shanties in forgeign languages (with translation). There is also a wealth of graphics to pillage for newsletters and posters. I've been amazed and gratified to the used books I can find at affordable prices on the web, books that I've been looking for for years. I now have my own working copies of C. Fox Smith's three books of sea poems to drool over...mine, mine, mine and I'll share them out as songs when I'm done with them.;-)

Cheers

Thanks again all.
Anyone know where I can get a copy of....

Who am I responding to? It's hard, somehow, to converse with space. A moke is a donkey.

"Moke" is also a perjorative term for any person with black skin, as I've heard.

For more info, I've found this page with what appears to be some info on the origin. I'll post the synopsis of basic history here, there's more on citations and all:
DESCRIPTION: Singer lands in America in 1844 and works in the pinewoods. An Irish girl offers him whiskey and looks him over. He describes the teamsters with whom he works. Song may have many floating verses and a nonsense chorus.

I've heard 'moke' was a perjorative term for a black person, that it was a shortened version of 'smoke'. I've never found any proof of that, and it may have started with one person saying "I think 'moke' may mean..." and then a bunch of other people saying "I heard it means..."

Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language, copyright 1966 contains:

Moke [pers. name Moke, applied as pet name to the donkey], [Slang], 1. a donkey; hence, 2 a dull, stupid person.

Now, I haven't met anyone else who remembers the term, but I swear I heard folks use the term 'jamoke' when I was growing up in upstate NY. When I first heard 'moke', I thought it was a shortened version of that. 'Jamoke' seemed to be a friendly insult more than a seriously bad name.

I have heard the term "jamoke" but mostly in mysteries and old gangster movies. Jeri, you could be right about its relationship with "moke" but we will need an etymologist to weigh in on that aspect. I have a dictionary of word origins at home. Maybe that will shed some light.

I find it hardly credible that the line "Old Moke picking on a banjo" could mean "a dull stupid person" picking on a banjo; some of my best friends are brilliant banjo pickers, at least that's what they claim.;-)
