Sessions at Paddy Burke's - Boston

While I was in Boston for two weeks, my friend Barry Finn invited me to a session at Paddy Burke's Pub. While this wasn't one of the best attended, it was an absolute great time. And what a setting for a singaround. Third floor of this wonderful, old, triangular shaped building. Just like sitting in someones family room with a fully stocked bar. A wonderful environment, and led by Barry. If you are in the area, drop a line to Barry for an invite.

Mick

What the sched? I'll be in Boston area for a week in late Sept. I have a few bookings but may have some free time for a session, depending upon the schedule. SOunds like this session may be worth a visit!

I dropped in last year on a trip to the East coast and can also attest to the great acapella singing and welcoming atmosphere. If you do find the time, it's well worth it, Jed.

It's held on Wednesday nights, starting somewhere about 9:30 & goes till whenever. It's located on Portland St. close to the new Fleet Cnter (the old Boston Gardens). If anyones looking for info here's their web site
( http://people.ne.mediaone.net/reynoldsb/singers.htm )
or they can PM me or post a thread, a few other catter's also are regulars & then again somemore are semi-regulars.If you do plan to come by let us here know so we can make our best efforts to have as many Mudcatter's show up as possible.
Don't let Mick mislead any of you, I don't lead the session, it really flows by itself, I just find myself moving the session along once in a while when the chatter gets to be a little long in tooth (when Mick's there, any of you ever see the size of his teeth?). We know you're back out this way in a few weeks & we'll be expecting you, see you when & if.
Thanks chanteyranger for your kind plug we do like to sing but more than that we do like to have a good time doing it & that includes making any visitor or newbie as welcome as possible. Come on out this way again it'd be right nice to see & hear you again.

Barry

I will be there on August 15 and August 22 for sure, Barry. Would sure like to see some more of our New England Mudcatters. If you haven't been to Paddy's, you need to get there. Wonderful old pub! And Finn should talk about long in the tooth, the old fart..........LOL.

All the best,

Mick

I've been to Paddy Burke's almost every Wednesday for the past 2 years, which I recently realized has been a bit obsessive... So I'm taking a bit of a break for the summer. But I'll try to make it on August 15th for Big Mick, & in September for Jed. I enjoyed meeting & hearing Chanteyranger and Mark Cohen and probably a few other cats that escape me at the moment.

It's definitely a small session. I think the most we've ever had has been 15 people on only one night other than our occasional guest nights. (Next guest Len Graham on a Monday, (vs. the usual Weds.) the only night we could get him, Oct. 15). It is a bit small some nights, but I think I prefer our usual 5 to 8 people, than the singers clubs in England that usually have 20 to 40 people. I like being able to chat about the songs, as well as singing them. (Though we take turns reminding each other "Is this a singers club or a talkers club?")

It's a great place for unaccompanied singing of all kinds, our co-founder Shay Walker plays guitar on most of his songs, Barry & Peg have been known to play bodhran occasionally, & every now & then a tin whistle, fiddle, harmonica, poem, or story will show up for a little variety.

I look forward to seeing all mudcatters passing through...

'Twas a great evening, last fall, good people, good songs, wonderful ambience. I hope to be back. Can't say "soon", but my sister does live in Lexington, so it will probably happen some time.

Aloha,
Mark

This is a long stretch for us Mainers, especially if it starts at 9:30 PM. Most of us fall asleep long before that! It probably isn't advisable to sleep in the van overnight in some nearby alleyway. Sigh. I guess we'll just to make do with inflicting ourselves on The Press Room.

I may be able to make it on Sept 22. I have a few possible things in the works, so cannot commit now, but will have it sorted out soon, and will post to this thred again. I hope I can make it.

So I gather I should leave my guitar at home?

I was there last year at Barry's invitation and had a great time. I'm glad to hear Paddy Burke's Pub is continuing to host the group. Judy, I can't think why such regular attendance would be thought obsessive. If I lived in Boston, I'd be there every week.

I have been outta town for a few days so did not make it tonight; but I plan to go back next week! I also missed quite a bit this summer because I was on vacation. I miss the sessiun when I don't attend tho.

It's a great time and the singing is often first rate.

See ya next week, Big Mick!

OK. I've cleared an obstacle or two, and now plan to attend the session on Spet 26. As we get closer to that date, I'll refresh this thread in hopes of keeping a focus on it and get as many area Mudcatters there as possible. I am really looking forward to it!

Hi Dan, does that (e-mail) mean you may be coming up this week? Hope so.

And you Max, I've heard tell you may be in the area too, yes?

Hi Mick I know that I'll be seeing you. Till then.
