07 Aug 01 - 01:56 PM (#522712) Subject: RE: Help: mike canavan From: John J at home Wow, that's a name from the past! I understand Mike went to live in Ireland some years ago. I still sing his song about John Willie Lees beer, and whenever I do I always say who wrote it and then ask if anyone knows where he ended up. It was such a question that got the Ireland answer. I too used to go to The Ring o' Bells in the mid 70s. Do you know what happened to Eric Peacock, the concertina player who used to be resident there with Ken & Mags Whiting? (They moved to Glossop). I used to turn up on a motorcycle, the only club attendee who did at that time. Being a club member, I also used to go to Bury Folk club, they had a reciprocal membership arrangement. I don't remember Tom Yates by name but may recognise him if I saw him. I now live in Timperley, near Altrincham. Cheers, John |
07 Aug 01 - 02:04 PM (#522717) Subject: RE: Help: mike canavan From: GUEST,Raggytash I put a thread on recently asking about Tom Yates, if you look back about a month you may find it. Sadly one of the responses I received told me, in rather a crude manner that Tom had died. I was an admirer of his writng and performance and still do Bide a While. I would like to resurrect other songs but don't know where to find them. The one Mike Canavan song I vaguely recall was Don't bring that in 'ere lad. Last time I saw him was in the 80's in a pub in Marsden West Yorkshire having a walk and a pint. |

'....a pint of john willie lees, willie leeeees, a pint of john willie lees...' Do yer remember....'We make a start at the Dusty Miller, sup a couple at the Old Boars 'ead (hoars bed), Brittania, Asheton and Ring 'o' Bells and now we're off to our beds me boys so steady the boat boys steady'? I think Ken and Mags used to run the Friday club but later one was started on Sunday by Martin Gittins and Rick, known as 'Pint 'n alf'. P.S. the butterfly collection is still there! |
07 Aug 01 - 04:34 PM (#522863) Subject: RE: Help: mike canavan From: GUEST,harry Mike still performs as The Legplaiters with a couple of ex members of Jolly Jack(remember them?) and I think he can often be found at the Joiners pub in Middleton which is, as far as I can gather, an informal session on Monday nights. Sorry, but no contact number to confirm this. Incidentally, does anyone from the Rochdale area remember John and Ann Butterworth who ran the Brownhill folk club in the early 80's? I lost contact with them a while ago and I'd rather like to re-establish it. |

12 Nov 16 - 04:38 PM (#3820193) Subject: RE: Help: mike canavan From: GUEST Mike canavan was my teacher at primary school. Hollin county primary. He had a massive influence on my life and his belief in the little things that people could do or be. Today I sadly learned that he passed around 3 years ago. He will be missed. On another note, Eric peacock the concertina player is either my dad or grandad depending on how old he was when you remember him. |

I am working out how to get it from record to computer, and then maybe to YouTube or something, or maybe I could do some CDs or something... Anyway, I'll keep you posted. |
