Apologies if this has been covered before, but the 'Supersearch' doesn't appear to be working.

Any info please. All I know is that it was released on a Fellside compilation at one time

Thanks

Somewhere amongst the threads on Nic, you will find a link to a discography with the details, sorry I don't have time to find the link myself.

Thanks Pavene,

I would try and find it myself - but the search facility here appears to be broken

It was originaly released on a "Folk Review" subscribers album in the 70's. When search is working, look for a thread called something like "New Nic Jones double CD", a very long thread with lots of info on Nic's unavailable work.
The good news is, that the double CD being compiled by our very own Ralphie, and Nic himself will include Warlike and at least some of the Folk Review tracks.
If I remember the thread contains an email address for Ralphie or George H, to be notified when it is out, which should be very soon.
love, john.

You can search by using the filter as well, Based on Dita's information, I found the thread here.

Thanks everyone,

Whilst I certainly buy the new CD when it comes out, I was more interested in any background information about the song, when Nic recorded it etc.

Dita mentions a "Folk Review" recording from the 70's - any more info?

Anything else about the song would be good too.

Many thanks

Note - forum search in the Quick Links is still working, it is only Supersearch which is broken

Warlike Lads of Russia by Nic Jones is currently available on Fellside CD : FECD156 "Flash Company" a compilation by various artists. Why not check the Fellside Records website and mail them for info?

I know it's available on a Fellside recording..

At the certainty of repeating myself:

I know Nic was singing it by 1973 at the latest, because I recorded him.

Folk Review was a magazine, edited by Fred Woods, in the 70's. It was my education about the revival in England. It was a reliable guide to what and who was good, worth going to see, worth buyng.
Fred released two albums, for new subscribers, which were samplers of artists featured on the mag, like Nic, Archie Fisher, and a number of others. Each artist played two songs each and the recordings were exclusive to the album. ?Produced by Fred himself. As far as I can remember Nic recorded two tracks for each album. I don't have them, and have never been able to find them at record fairs (or ebay in recent years).
Ralphie listed on the "new CD" thread some tracks, including "Warlike", that I recognised from these recordings and he confirmed that the tracks on the forthcoming CD were indeed the Folk Review recordings.
My copies of Folk Review are languishing in a box, in a loft, in a house where I no longer live. I will try to rescue them and see if there is any more info on the recordings in the mag. As Ralphie has got a hold of the masters, unless he remastered them from vinyl, he might have more info.

Love, john

OK Chaps
Warlike Lads of Russia and Fordie were indeed on the old Fred Woods album.
Fordie appears on "Ballads" Fellside FECD110
Warlike on "Flash Company" Fellside FECD156
For the "Unearthed" project...Fordie has been rejected by Nic as boring !!!
But, Warlike will be on CD1 track 5.
When was it recorded??? Nic can't remember what happened at Sidmouth last week.....let alone 30 years ago!!
As you've probably guessed, Track order is now set in stone for the double album (well, it is today anyway!)
Work starts in earnest next Saturday. Love Ralphie

I know I posted this somewhere, but I can't find it now! Now I can see it, the version of Warlike Lads on a broadside in the Bodley Ballad library seems to have a couple of extra verses, which I will transcribe when I get a chance (But it is difficult to read in places). In the meantime, here is the link

Bonaparte's escape from Russia. A new song

Don't forget you can use the magnifying glass for a larger view!

You'll also find a comprehensive discography of Nic's work at Nic Jones

But it hasn't yet been updated to include Unearthed. I have to say that my own favourite tracks are on the first two albums. I also tend to prefer the faster ones.

Not quite comprehensive, Mick- it doesn't include Unearthed

Nic Jones Unearthed Track List

And the e-mail contact on the site in not working so I can't remind them.

pavane & Noreen - I did actually write fairly comprehensive originally, but it seemed a bit niggardly, so I retracted fairly. I'm duly chastened.

No criticism intended!

Has anyone else been struck by Nic's change in vocal style during his career? The contrast between his first album and some of the later tracks is quite marked, even though it only covers some 10 years.

We bought Unearthed last fall, and were listening to the track "The Jukebox as she turned", saying "Wow, that's a great song! Where did he get it?"

My husband checked the notes and started laughing - the song is by Jeff Deitchman, a local aquaintance of ours in the Washington, DC area, and a very talented songwriter. Jeff is another excellent musician who no longer performs, so I'm glad that recordings of some of his songs (especially being done by musicians as fine as Nic Jones) are still out there!

Lamarca.....
So, you know Jeff D....!
Has he got any other material??
Hope he's well, and I'll let Nic know that he's still around.
All the Best
