SATURDAY NIGHT
(Tom Paxton)

Saturday night and the bar is packed
The drinks are watered and the decks are stacked
The whores are grinning with their faces cracked
And the gamblers cursing at the horses they've backed

Saturday night and the bar is jammed
We've got our table and the rest be damned
The waiter's hovering near at hand
We're loaded earlier than we'd planned

Some damn fool is starting a fight
Why does he wait for Saturday night?

La la la la la la la

Mary and Eddie are busy indeed
Making up for lost time in the rear
George is beginning to sweat while a stranger
Is sticking her tongue in his ear
Dave is explaining the next revolution
Someone is granting the crown absolution
Whoever is running her foot up my leg
I love you

Saturday night and the jukebox roars
Off in the corner the sound of snores
My head is ringing with noise and smoke
And someone's ordering Scotch and Coke

Saturday night and my friends are blind
They're rocking the table just to blow my mind
I don't know why but I'm on my knees
Showing Bacall how an ape climbs trees
Some damn fool is starting a fight
Why does he wait for Saturday night?

La la la la la la la

Mary and Eddie are busy indeed
Making up for lost time in the rear
George is beginning to faint while a stranger is sticking her tongue in his ear
Dave is conducting the next revolution
Someone is granting the crowd absolution
Whoever is running her foot up my leg
I love you

La la la la la la la

Mary and Eddie are being arrested
For making up time in the rear
George is out calling a cab with the stranger
Who still has her tongue in his ear
Dave has abandoned the next revolution
Someone is canceling his absolution
Whoever is running her foot up my leg
I love you

That's from memory, so I can't swear by it. My copy of Tom Paxton 6 is still packed away in the boxes that are slowly being emptied. Chords? We don't need no steenking chords!

Aloha,
Mark

In the first chorus, that would be "crowd" rather than "crown", I think? As well, I thought McCall was the tree-climber, not Bacall? That's just from my memory as well, I don't have the songbook to hand. I'll look it up tonight and fill in the blanks.

Graham.

I've always sung it as McColl (as in Ewan)!

As I learned the song aurally, distortion is possible, but I always liked the image of Tom and old Jimmy Miller out on the town together!

Mark, Thanks for the lyric refresher. The reason I wanted the chords is that I've forgotten exactly how parts of the tune go, and the chords would bring it back to me.

Grab gets the trivia prize. The "Tom Paxton Anothology" song book has "McCall". Tom's version was on "Tom Paxton 6" (1970 Elektra EKS 74066)

Actually, Mark,
Maybe we DO need those "steenkeeng chords." :)

At least, the guy who introduced me to this song used a chord pattern that walked up the guitar neck and wasn't your basic 3- or 4-chord pattern.   Anyone got 'em?

I think the lyrics posted above are missing some verses and/or the sequence of verses and choruses is off.

Anyone have the complete, accurate lyrics?

Better yet, anyone have a video link?

SATURDAY NIGHT

Words and Music by Tom Paxton

Saturday night and the bar is packed.
The drinks are watered and the decks are stacked.
The whores are grinning with their faces cracked,
And the gamblers cursing the horses they backed.
Saturday night and the bar is jammed.
We've got our table and the rest be damned.
Our waiter's are hovering near at hand.
We're loaded earlier than we planned.
Some damn fool is starting a fight,
Why does he wait for Saturday night?

Mary and Eddie are busy indeed,
Making up for lost time in the rear;
George is beginning to sweat while a stranger
Is sticking her tongue in his ear.
David's explaining the next revolution,
Someone is granting the crowd absolution,
Whoever is running her foot up my leg,
I love you
La, la la la, La la la la.

Saturday night and the juke box roars.
Off in the corner the sound of snores;
My head is ringing with noise and smoke,
And someone's ordering Scotch and Coke.
Saturday night and my friends are blind.
They're rocking the table to blow my mind.
I don't know why but I'm on my knees,
Showing McCall how an ape climbs trees.
Some damn fool is starting a fight,
Why does he wait for Saturday night?

Mary and Eddie are busy indeed,
Making up for lost time in the rear;
George is beginning to faint while a stranger
Is sticking her tongue in his ear.
David's conducting the next revolution,
Someone is granting the crowd absolution,
Whoever is running her foot up my leg,
I love you.
La la la la, La la la la.

Mary and Eddie are being arrested,
For making up time in the rear;
George is out calling a cab with the stranger,
Who still has her tongue in his ear.
Dave has abandoned the next revolution,
Someone is cancelling his absolution,
Whoever is running her foot up my leg,
I love you.

You can order the album from Tom's own website. You can also hear a clip of the chorus there:

That G-Am-Gdim-G progression is a bit more harmonically sophisticated than Tom usually gets. It works perfectly, though.

Heard this on a Folk on Two / Folkweave many years ago. Its a hilarious take of folks in a bar getting it on and enjoying themselves. Can't imagine anyone else performig it. But what are the words? Thanks.

Man oh Man!

My brother taught me that song a generation ago and I've enjoyed it many times just playing it in my own mind.

I don't know if I knew that was a Tom Paxton gem. I'll bet he knew.
