He was a scholar and a poet who composed in both Irish and English. This song was written about 1860, the last verse being inspired by an expected Fenian rising. The air is a variant of AN PAISTÍN FÍONN, which has been discussed in other threads. 3,900 people died in the parish of Kilrush 1847-'49. There is a fine version of this song by Michael Flanagan on the C.C.E. publication, TRADITIONAL SONGS AND SINGERS. Brían. |

Interestingly though I had note the similarity in the tunes for An Paistin Fionn and Lone Shanakyle so am happy someone verified this!
