hi there. been trying to get lyrics to "super skier". i know it is from the chad mitchell trio's album "a mighty day on campus". all i can remember is the opening verse:

well they called him super skier as they sat around that sun deck for he swore that he would never take a spill- when they finally got him down they had to use three tobaggans to carry all the pieces down the hill

i seem to recall it was a kind of parody of kingston trio's 'ballad of the mta'.

I don't know if you ever got a reply to your information request, but I have been singing this song ever since my Dad brought home "The Best of the Chad Mitchell Trio" in 1963 (if I remember properly - anyway, I was seven years old and impressed enough by the album to memorize all the songs on it as best as I could!) Let me see if I can remember all of it!

SUPER SKIER (I think Bob Gibson wrote it)

Well, they called him Super Skier as he sat around the sun deck,
For he swore that he would never take a spill.
When they finally brought him down, they had to use three toboggans
To carry all the pieces down the hill!

CHORUS: He was coming down the slope, doing 90 miles an hour
When he caught an edge of his ski.
Well, his clothes they were fast, but the slopes they were faster.
That's the last of Super Skier we shall see!

Well, he hollered "What the hell!" as he lined them parallel.
He figured he had nothing more to learn.
And as he started on his way, he shouted "Andeley"*,
Assuming that he'd never have to turn.

(*This is phonetic. I never took Spanish and have no idea how this word is spelled properly!)

Well, he was coming down the slope, doing 90 miles an hour,
When a mogul flipped him in the air;
His jumping form was fine until he ran into that pine,
And two one-legged skiers ran from there! CHORUS

When he left that tree at last, he was moving twice as fast;
Both halves were skimming moguls like a feather.

Now the moral of my story, though my story's kind of gory,
Is, for all you sun-deck Charlies there's still hope.
You buy the fastest clothes you can, and talk skiing like a man,
But don't let people get you on the slopes! CHORUS

Please be warned that there might be a word wrong here or there. If you can get your hands on the Mitchell Trio Songbook (Quadrangle Press, 1964), I think it has the song, but the words were not exactly what the trio was singing!

Are you a Chad Mitchell Trio fan, or "just" a skiing buff? (Or both?) Obviously I am a raving fan of these guys - always have been, always will be!

Anyway, hope this helps you out!

Actually, it's more a parody of "The Wreck of the Old 97," which of course uses the same tune--which goes back to the song of which "The MTA" is a parody, "The Ship That Never Returned." --seed

Never heard it before, but I got a kick out of the fact that it is set in Aspen. That's where Little Nell's is, right at the foot of Aspen Mountain.

One of my long time favorites. Glad to see it posted here. The CMT had some wonderfully funny and clever songs in the political vein that are worth keeping around too because they allow us to see the times (early 60's) as they were......and isn't that something music does?

That's the real importance of the Lomax works and indeed our own Sandy and Caroline. We want to retain the music, the songs...but we also must retain the historical perspective they represent.

Sister Connie is trying to convince me to write some companion books to her sons' American History texts. They home school and there is very little music ed. things available. A book or two on American History through American "Kitchen" Music and the instruments involved (tracing their roots also). It's a thought.

In conversation with a "Musicologist" years ago, I was told that the reason for the absence of songs, by and for women, in his collection of Appalachian mountain music was because women in the area did NO writing/singing in the 18th century, as "times were hard and they were too busy". After a few more questions, the truth was that he had, inadvertently or not, neglected to ASK the women in the homes he visited. "DO IT"...Catspaw...and if you're able to unearth and include more songs written by women, sign me up for an advanced purchase!
