It, I'm sure, is "Jimmy Brown the Newsboy". I've been listening to the Carter Family, Flatt & Scruggs, Mac Wiseman and others.

The original "Jimmie Brown, the Paper Boy" was written by W.S. Hayes in 1875, which doesn't have the "no shoes upon my feet" line and whose melody is quite different. Words with MIDI is here. The original sheet music (1875) is here in the Libray of Congress.

I sell the morning paper, sir. My name is Jimmy Brown.
Everybody knows that I'm the newsboy of the town.
You can hear me yelling, "Morning Star" up and down the street.
Got no hat upon my head, no shoes upon my feet.

Never mind, sir, how I live. All look at me and frown.
I sell the morning paper, sir. My name is Jimmy Brown.
I'm awful cold and hungry, sir. My clothes are mighty thin.
I wander about from place to place my daily bread to win.

My Daddy died a drunkard, sir, I heard my mother say;
And I am helping mother, sir, to steer me on my way.
Mama always tells me, "There's nothing in the world to lose."
I'll get a job in Heaven, Sir, and sell the Gospel News.

DAMMIT, I see this happen every time someone asks for song lyrics. You give him a whole lot of history, Bull shit anecdotes, etc., WHY DON'T YOU JUST WRITE DOWN THE LYRICS, LIKE THE PERSON ASKED FOR, AND, KNOCK OFF THE CRAP, unless the person asks for it.

See, I really can be cranky if the situation calls for it. (Serious frown) Jody Gibson.

Jesus!

Take a valium, mate.

You'll note that masato sakurai included a blue clicky to the version of the lyrics that's in the database. And he/she gave a wee bit more info as well. What's the big deal?

OK. I just wanted to tell the original doesn't have the line. I was not talking about the history. If Bob Jr wants only the words without any talking, all of my answer must have been an underlined "Click here." But why should I have posted the whole lyrics already recorded in DT when he can get them just by clicking the title?

Don't worry mosato. You did exactly the correct thing. Post lyrics already in DT, unless a variant is discouraged.

bob jr has complained recently about a non-music discussion so he should appreciate some additional information even if Cranky is, well, Cranky today.

The reason a lot of us provide background information is because this site is a permanent resource, not an ephemeral newsgroup; whether or not the original questioner is interested, others will be.  The reason we provide links to material already available here is because the unnecessary re-posting of lyrics simply clogs up an already large site and makes helping other people in the future more complicated and time-consuming than it needs to be.

Unless the desired tune was in fact Left On the Street by Bill Monroe:

I was left on the street
With no shoes upon my feet,
When I saw my mom and daddy drive away.
Now, I'm not old enough
To know that much myself,
But I saw my mom and daddy drive away.

Could it be?

bob j, isn't this, aka "Lonesome Road Blues", the version you asked for?
Some versions, however, don't have the "no shoes on my feet" line, as the one in DT. Click here and here, and Doc Watson's "Going Down This Road Feeling Bad" in The Essential Doc Watson (Vanguard). See also "Lonesome Road Blues" in Peter Wernick's Bluegrass Songbook (p. 62).
Incidentally, there are two more "no shoes on my feet" songs in the database: "Don't Sell Daddy Any More Whiskey" and "Crossbone Skully".

Very sorry, something was wrong with my fingers. I apologize, bob j, I mistyped even your name. So I'll try it again.

The version bob j asked for is probably this one, aka "Lonesome Road Blues."
Some versions, however, don't have the "no shoes on my feet" line, as this one in DT. Also here and here, and Doc Watson's "Going Down This Road Feeling Bad" in The Essential Doc Watson (Vanguard) & Elementary Doctor Watson (Vanguard). Doc's lyrics are here.

My abject apology to all, especially to masato sakurai
When I first posted to this thread I was brand new to computers and I had no idea what MIDI was or indeed what any blue clicky was
I had my head up my ass and it's hard to think when I'm like that. The smell gets in the way.

Sincerely
Jody Gibson.

Bob Dylan recorded a song titled 'No shoes on my feet'. It is on 'Genuine Basement Tapes Vol 5'. I don't have the CD, so I do not know what it relates to. It might be what Louie Roy is looking for.

Hi, Stewie - this page on the Basement Tapes (good stuff) says "No Shoes on my Feet is usually known as Going down the road Feeling Bad which is where this discussion starts getting circular....
