Songs by Mick Hanly

I have just been listening to some Mick Hanley tapes which I hadn't listened to for a while. When I decided to check out some lyrics I was surprised that he did not come up in the links (except for one) although I know he has been mentioned in the threads. I think that he is a great songwriter - as do many other singers who have performed his songs. He too is a great performer. It then set me thinking about how you select which songs to include. This is not a criticism as I, like many others, think that Mudcat is a wonderful resource.

I hate to correct spelling, but it is necessary for a search. If you search for 'Mick Hanly' you'll find at least three of his songs posted here.

Annegi,
Mick is a great writer, and a great performer, I have listened to him from singer of traditional song, through Moving Hearts, and on to the last four self penned albums. His songwriting just gets better and better. He is much underrated.

The last time I had the chance to see him solo, 10 or more years ago was at a ?Celtic Connections gig with an audience of myself and about 20 others, he still turned in a stuning set.
He was back a few years later playing a Songwiters concert in the main Concert Hall with Jimmy McCarty and Dougie McLean, which was sold out, it was great to see him get the audience he deserves.
Anybody know what he's up to these days?

As for getting songs into the DigiTrad you post them on a thread with Add Lyr and with luck they'll get harvested. I think most traditional songs make it, I don't know about songs copyright songs, if there is a problem. I'm sure J.O. or someone will answer that.

ps I've just added the third verse to the "Past the point of Rescue" thread>
love, john.

Mick Hanly's website

His songs in the forum (those he has written not those he has sung):

My love is in America
All I remember
Past the point of rescue
Uncle John

good ones missing:
Crusader
Without the fanfare

I often wonder if its worth coming on and making a negative comment: well, Mick's just too sociological for me.

Thanks for the info - did not notice the spelling error. Dita, I too was at a concert - in the Moir Hall I think -about 10 years ago and again saw him at The Glasgow Concert Hall. I find his lyrics appealing and like his style. Annegi

Another query! I have looked through the search tips and following Wolfgang's advice typed in Mick Hanly (correctly spelt) and still got no returns. Is there a special way to search for song writers? Thanks in advance. Annegi

Maybe you typed in an extra space (Mick Hanly) by accident or something like that. The search works just the same for songwriters as for any other name or word. And sometimes it goes off the boil and won't work, like the rest oif us.

Often the names of writers aren't in the DT, because they weren't included when the song was posted, maybe because the person doing it didn't know - there's a standing request for people who notice that kind of thing to send in the information so it can be added.)

You won't get any results from the "Digitrad Lyrics Search", because that only searches the Digital Tradition database.  the newer and more powerful "Digitrad and Forum Search", on the other hand, will get you a number of references.

No offense here ..... But I get all the same hits that Wolfgang got. Are you typing the name in the "Digitrad and Forum Search" or in the filter or DT boxes? Use the "DT and Forum Search" at the top of the page to the left, just above the threads.

MARK HENLEY was gigging around in the early 1970s. He and I were on an LP issued for an anniversary of a club called Charlotte's Web in Rockford, Illinois. The album was called Get Folked. It was the first time on a recording for me.

We never do blame (well, should) GUESTs for failing in a search when even seasoned members fail sometimes. There are four different search options (also counting the filter/age option) and each of them uses different rules and has different shortcomings.

The Digitrad and Forum search as has been said is all in all the best, but has the shortcoming that it doesn't work on recent postings (and nobody tells you how far back it doesn't work). And you seem to look particularly stupid if you have used this search in vain only to be told e.g. that the song in question has been posted 14 days ago.

mick hanly also recorded two of the best traditional albums ever back in the seventies--maybe earlier. "kiss in the morning early" and "over blackwater"--some of the best ever on hose two, both the guitar and bouzouki playing and the singing.

i found them both on ebay a few years ago and was eleted. a friend put them on cd and i regularily listen to them when i ride my bike. his rentition of rosemarry fair and kiss in the morning early are transcendent

Crusader (Mick Hanly)

There's a wilderness
It's a no man's land
Between Alice Springs and the ocean
Seventeen hundred miles of burning sand
And a silken thread keeps a hold on you
When the emptieness like a potion tends to fray your reason strand by strand
And there's no more need for the mask your wear
When the last goodbyes have been said
So kiss the cheeks of you dearest friends
And turn to the desert ahead
Now you're on your own like a sailing ship
You're the captain, crew and sailors
Turn around and this is what you see

Chorus

This me facing me all alone
'Cause I choose to be with the wind and the sun on me only me

Now you dream so much about being lost
Your ghost by a coolebah sleeping
Haunts you and whispers in your ear
Give up give up this lonely road
No one knows the promise you're keeping
You can't touch the emptiness out here
But the grace that mends this broken wing
The blue sky to regain
Will lift those feet and raise those eyes
To face the desert again
As the dawn reveals the journey's end
In truth it's only beginning
And it's as big as your eyes wish to see

Chorus
