British astronomer and science fiction writer Fred Hoyle has died aged 86. A long term advocate of the Steady State theory of the creation of the Universe, his books on astronomy were popular with the public. His first science fiction novel "Fifth Planet" was published in 1957 and this was followed by about 17 others including "The Black Cloud" and "Ossian's Ride." His "A For Andromeda" was a huge success on television in 1962 and it was followed by "Andromeda Breakthrough" in the same year. The series helped to make Julie Christie a star. To slightly paraphrase Banjo Patterson "he saw at night the wondrous glory of the everlasting stars." At one with the Universe.
