Scotch Measure

My wife and I have been playing an album by this band recently, and have taken a version of "Wild Rover" from it. We're wondering if anyone knows what happened to this band? THey seem to have originated from Scotland, and one of the members was Sylvia Barns... Not a lot to go on.

Any ideas?

Jim and Silvia Barnes did come from Scotland and did move to England, a big loss to the Scotish club and festival scene. Look out for a long deleted record on the Topic lable entitled "Kentegern", sorry don't know the number. Kentegern was the name of their longest running group? band? combo? This band included in the lineup, Sandy Stanage on guitar and Dougie Pincock on whistle and bagpipes. Havent seen Jim and Silvia since the first Celtic Conections Festival but they are still playing. I believe they are booked to appear at "Both Sides of the Tweed" festival in Inverleithen (between Pebles and Galashields) the weekend of 12-14 th. October allong with Boys of the Lough, Vin Garbut,Les Gatos Patanas, The London Lassies and Pete Quin and lots more. cheers.

Silvia was also the original singer with the Battlefield Band if my memory serves me right.

sandy Stanage is the best solo guitarist I have ever seen.
He lives near Crail, Fife, Scotland, and still plays in the area. If he could sing; he'd be perfect!

Scotch Measure consisted of Jim & Sylvia Barnes (of Battlefield and Kentigern fame) and a Scot's exile who's name escapes me (and he'll probably kill me when he finds this message out) they recorded one album on Topic which I may have on tape

Jim and Sylvia are living in Berkshire, and still singing. We saw them do a brilliant set this year, at the Sussex Song Weekend in March.

MC Fat I think the name that escapes you may be Andy Lavery. If I'm not mistaken, he was in the original line-up of Scotch Measure.

Brian

Thanks Brian, it was Andy Lavery when I first met him he was one of my residents at Aylesbury Folk Club in the 70's he then moved and went to Uni in Reading where I think he still lives. He's a fine songwriter and has written some very humerous material including a great song about 'Star Trek'

Great stuff. We'll keep our ears and eyes open should we be at any folk things in Bucks.

Thanks people/

Kentigern after St Kentigern of course, as every Glaswegian knows.

Picking up on this old thread -

Sad news is that Jim Barnes died recently but had an enormous send off by his friends in the traditional music world.

Better news is that Sandy Stanage IS now singing - and pretty regularly with Jack Beck.

Small world Syndrome here!

Their PA (in the South) was built by a guy called keith Green (Guildford Surrey) and ended up with Wheelwrights bane which still includes Andy Lavery - sometimes - Wheelwrights can be found on the Web, I call with them.

Rex Morrey who runs Wheelwrights with his wife Mary will be able to tell you more if you want I should think....Wheelwrights Bane

One suggested correction: The mention of Pete Quin (one N) in this thread should ( I believe ) refer to Peter Quinn (2 N's) ..
Pete Quin does Ragtime and his own material. He has been around since Bridlington had steam ships off the coast. Refer to www.petequin.com .

Peter Quinn played with the London Lassies.
