A local prof with a strange project going asked me to look for this song for him. "When Veronica Plays Her Harmonica on the Pier at Santa Monica." He said he searched DT with no luck. We would be grateful for any help at all.

It was performed by Kay Kyser, a native of Rocky Mount, NC, and his big band.

There are tons of Kay Kyser tunes on the net, unfortunately, this one is not seeming to be one of them...

The lyrics quoted by GUEST above are actually part of Adam Sandler's "The Hanukkah Song," 1994. You can see the rest of the song here along with some other Hanukkah songs.

There is a Kay Kyser web site, and it lists 78 songs (or tunes) out of 400 he allegedly recorded, but it doesn't list this one.

Other sources say that "When Veronica Plays the Harmonica" was recorded by Kay Kyser's Campus Cowboys in Dec. 1947, with vocal by Gloria Wood. It was released on Columbia #38197, with "Woody Woodpecker" by Kay Kyser and His Orchestra on the other side. If you want to go shopping for the 78, you may have better luck asking for "Woody Woodpecker" since it was a much better known song.

I can't find any lyrics, or any evidence that this song was ever issued on a CD. It has, however, been played on Dr. Demento's radio show.

When Veronica plays her harmonica, down upon the pier of santa monica, she plays hot jive with a hep cat fish, (da da, da da, da da, di da da da ) swims with a swish,

A big fat turtle, her name was myrtle, shook and shivered til she broke her girdle,

The whale that swallowed Jonah yelled across the bay, I'll open up my mouth and let you out today to hear Veronica, play her harmonica, down on the pier at Santa Monica

(what I remember)

WHEN VERONICA PLAYS THE HARMONICA
KAY KYSER

When Veronica plays the harmonica
Down on the pier at Santa Monica
When she gives out with Gershwin or Bach
The perch and barracuda come wigglin' up to the dock
The seals and haddock get aquabatic
When she plays on her chromatic
When she plays boogie woogie lobsters flippity flop
She even made a submarine blow it's top
When Veronica plays her harmonica
Down on the pier at Santa Monica

When Veronica plays the harmonica
Down on the pier at Santa Monica
She plays mad jive for the hepcat fish
She even plays a tune for a tuna that swims with a swish
A big fat turtle whose name was Myrtle
Shook and shivered till she broke her girdle,
The whale that swallowed Jonah yelled across the bay
I'll open up my mouth and let you out today
To hear Veronica play her harmonica
Down on the pier at Santa Monica

Two happy sturgeons whose hatch were mergin'
Were married when her wedding march was urgin'
Each sturgeon had some little ones with eyes of blue
Who taught a school of eels and kippered herring too
To play harmonica without Veronica
Down on the pier of Santa Monica

To answer the question about "Veronica who plays her homonica down on the pier in Santa Monica, the song is real it is by Kay Kyser and was cut on a 78 RPM....I too am trying to find a download of it. The flip side of the 78 was THE WOODY WOODPECKER SONG\

I got the details from kuow.ORG THEY PLAY SWINGTIME EAR MUSIC OVER THE air waves and internet. I used to have the 78 but was too young to remember the artist. My folks had bought an old ROCK OLA that was loaded with 78's....

That is a cartoon pin-up show but the music is by Kay Kyser and His Orchestra with the vocal done by Gloria Wood. I don't know if it's from the original recording, but the lyrics are the same as those posted above.

WHEN VERONICA PLAYS THE HARMONICA
(Tommy Mack / Jimmy Mulcay / Mildred Mulcay)

The Mulcays (vocal: Patricia Koren) - 1948
Kay Kyser's Kampus Kowboys (vocal: Gloria Wood) - 1948

You can sail around the world to see the sights
And even see the famous northern lights,
But strange as it may be
I'm sure you will agree
The greatest sight of all is by the sea

When Veronica plays the harmonica
Down on the pier at Santa Monica
When she gives out with Gershwin and Bach
The perch and barracuda come wigglin' up to the dock
The seals and haddock get aquabatic
When she plays on her chromatic
When she plays boogie woogie, lobsters flippity flop
She even made a submarine blow it's top
When Veronica plays her harmonica
Down on the pier at Santa Monica

When Veronica plays the harmonica
Down on the pier at Santa Monica
She plays mad jive for hepcat fish
She even plays a tune for a tuna that swims with a swish
A big fat turtle whose name was Myrtle
Shook and shivered till she broke her girlde
The whale that swallowed Jonah yelled across the bay
"I'll open up my mouth and let you go today
To hear Veronica play her hamonica
Down on the pier at Santa Monica"

A flying fish from Avalon flew out of sight
For he was smoking seaweed and was high as a kite
When Veronica raised the thermometer
Down on the pier at Santa Monica

An oyster got so stewed at an oyster spa
He stood right up and holler'd "Eat Me Eight To The Bar"
When Veronica played her harmonica
Down on the pier at Santa Monica

A fish was using Lifebuoy soap, she knew how he felt
She never smelled a smelt that smelt like that smelt smelt
So Veronica took her harmonica
And left the pier at Santa Monica
