BS: Actively ignoring threads ..

06 Sep 01 - 12:11 PM (#543472)
Subject: Actively ignoring threads ..
From: Steve Parkes

... never mind which ones. If I post to a thread I'm not ignoring it any more, so I thought I'd let you know that I'm not just taking no notice. If you chose to actively ignore this one on the same way, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt when I don't see your name here.

This is very silly, isn't it?

Steve

isn't "ignoring" the same as "taking no notice"? or would that be dismissing without visible reaction?

To actively ignore a thread, surely you would have to post to it. Reading a thread and not posting would be passively ignoring a thread. I guess I do both, I would not usually post to a thread like this but I thought this time I could add to the confusion. JohnB

From: SharonA

Well, now, if you're opening them and reading them, you're not ignoring them. We need a new term that means "not acknowledging a thread by replying to it."

How about "disposting"?

Subject: RE: BS: Actively ignoring threads ..
From: SharonA

("Disposting" is a bit of a pun on "disposing".) (So if we were to collectively decide to refrain from responding to a thread, we would be "going dispostal") (as in "garbage dispostal")

Steve makes a point, somewhat convoluted but still a valid point. Posting to a thread brings it to the top, encourages the flamer, and so on and so on.
Mary, who recently broke her own rule and answered a flamer.

Good use of litotes, Steve...or is it litote?

I think it's a good idea--and I am glad that Sharon understands the concept, and is posting here, rather than helping to keep "it" alive----by the way, Sharon, did you ever go and try the Perkasie Salad?

Thanks, Steve, excellent suggestion and it is fun to be able to post to this one instead!

How about it being a refraining from drive-by posting, then we could post sweet refrains here, instead!**BG**

Oh! Can I get on my soapbox here and not give Credence to the Clearwater Revivalists?
Yea, I suffer the same dichotomy or do I mean indecision? (can't decide on that one).
To get angry and post and in effect support or to ignore and by disposing, end them.
tis a consummation devoutly to be ......er .... er .....washed. (soapbox see?)

JohnB,
I interpret "actively ignoring" a thread as not posting on that thread but posting on a different thread and referring to the thread you are not posting to in the thread you are posting to.

I like it.

Sharon, perhaps 'dispostal' could also signify the refusal to go 'postal'. Useful word.

all very existential..Sartré would be proud of this thread.

Reminds me of an old sign I saw once:

I don't believe if one does not post to a thread that calls for an opinion about a controversial subject, that one can assume he or she favors one side or the other. Many of these threads are started only to create devisevness in the Mudcat community, and the poster doesn't care one way or the other how individual members come down on the subject.

I believe the best way to respond to those threads is not to respond and hope they go away. They rarely do, though, because people can't resist taking the bait. I'm guilty of doing that myself from time to time.

John in Hull. Oops, sorry I posted to that thread without thinking.

I agree with you, though I think ignoring is the best policy - like the Satanic Verses issue one can't condemn truly without having read it. However, if it is distasteful then just ignore it!

However, laughter is another good policy - I burst out laughing at a flasher a while ago and he hobbled off quickly into the night, struggling with his zipper..and that "Eminem Rules" thread, whilst not offensive in the racist, etc sense was a collective masterpiece of dealing with "nonsense".

Subject: RE: BS: Actively ignoring threads ..

Well, I'm actively getting so fed up with some of the obsessive threads - like "Globalisation is so yesterday" and some posters just wanting to hear the sounds of their own opinions without any interest in any discussion that I have resorted to crude monsyllabic replies (e.g.: "Bog Off") and then ignoring them.

Which (sigh) probably isn't the point of active ignoration (sic) - but, heck, I'm fed up being lady-like and reasonable.

25 Sep 01 - 02:29 PM (#558446)
Subject: RE: BS: Actively ignoring threads ..
From: McGrath of Harlow

Actively ignoring them in my case is, I open it up, and if it's not a music thread, and it's a GUEST whom I don't know from previous threads to be OK, I close it right down without even reading it.

Saves a lot of hassle, because there are some cunning buggers around playing games with multiple posts designed to stir things up for the sake of it.
