10 Sep 01 - 12:55 PM (#546359) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rose In The Snow From: GUEST,Genie I think this is how folk songs become folk songs. The song I heard was the Bill Staines song, but I could swear the people singing it sang, "...and share his memories when they're roses in the snow." [Either their memories mixed up the two songs or mine did. The result could be called 'lyric creep,' perhaps.] Both songs are great and thanks, guys, for posting them. Genie |
11 Sep 01 - 04:02 AM (#546828) Subject: Lyr Add: FLOWERS IN THE SNOW (Bill Staines) From: Greyeyes FLOWERS IN THE SNOW (Bill Staines) Who will walk her tonight out in the heather? Who will laugh away the teardrop in her eye? She wants someone to love her forever, But every new love only brings another lie. Cho. 1: Empty winds, you hear her say Fickle winds, they shift away And I don't need him in my life for I can fly . But who will walk her tonight out in the heather? And who will laugh away the teardrop in her eye? Who will smile with him when photographs are yellow And share his memories when they're flowers in the snow? Who will know his mind when all the words are hollow, And help him face the things he never seems to know? Cho. 2: It's the road, you hear him say, It's the road and it's my way And I don't need her in my life, now let me go But who will smile with him when photographs are yellow And share his memories when they're flowers in the snow? Repeat Ref. 1 and Ref. 2 |

17 Jun 06 - 01:15 AM (#1761979) Subject: Lyr Add: ROSES IN THE SNOW (Ruth Franks) From: Genie I found the lyrics to Roses In The Snow - the one Emmylou sings - but the transcriptionist had made the same "mondegreen" that I myself did for many months. LOL They had the last line of the chorus as "... and threw our roses in the snow." I have Emmylou singing it in my iTunes library and when I listen carefully to the lyrics, it's perfectly clear she's singing "grew," not "threw." And that makes much much more sense in the context. Here are the lyrics: ROSES IN THE SNOW (Ruth Franks) I met my darlin' in the springtime When all the flowers were in bloom, And like the flowers our love blossomed. We married in the month of june. Our love was like a burning ember. It warmed us as the cold winds blow. We had sunshine in December And grew our Roses In The Snow. Now God has taken my darlin' And left me with a memory. A memory I will always cherish Are these last words he said to me: "Our love was like a burning ember, It warmed us as the cold winds blow. We had sunshine in December And grew our Roses In The Snow." My darlin's buried on the hillside Where all the wild spring flowers grow, And when the winter snows start fallin', On his grave I'll place a rose. Our love was like a burning ember It warmed us as the cold winds blow.* We had sunshine in December And grew our Roses In The Snow. *The transcription site I found had that line as "It warmed us as a golden glow" -- which makes sense and sounds good, but that is not what Emmylou sings. |
