DONE MADE MY VOW TO THE LORD
Traditional Negro Spiritual

REFRAIN:
Done made my vow to the Lord
And I never will turn back.
I will go, I shall go
To see what the end will be.
Done opened my mouth to the Lord
And I never will turn back.
I will go, I shall go
To see what the end will be.

VERSES:

LEADER: Sometimes I'm up, sometimes I'm down,
PEOPLE: See what the end will be.
LEADER: But still my soul is heav'nly bound
PEOPLE: See what the end will be.

LEADER: I'll pray and pray and never stop,
PEOPLE: See what the end will be.
PEOPLE: Until I reach the mountain top,
PEOPLE: See what the end will be.

LEADER: If you get there before I do,
PEOPLE: See what the end will be.
LEADER: Tell all my friends I'm coming too,
PEOPLE: See what the end will be.

The tune is somewhat similar to "Go Down, Moses," so the two may be related. The line "sometimes I'm up, sometimes I'm down" is also used in "Nobody Knows the Trouble I See." Jeanette Thompson (soprano) sings "Done Made My Vow" (arr. E. Boatner) in her album Negro Spirituals (Pavane Records ADW 7267), in a slow and mournful way.

Recorded by the Fisk Jubilee Singers (Album title "Fisk Jubilee Singers"), on Folkways Records. The sound is poor.

I came across a version of this recorded by a women's quartet called "Meta Four." The song is basically this chorus sung over and over:

Done made my vow to the Lord
And I never will turn back.
I will go, I shall go
Since I have been set free.
Done made my vow to the Lord
And I never will turn back.
I will go, I shall go
Since I have been set free.

"I Made a Vow to the Lord" is the title of several variants.

I made a vow to the Lord
I made, a vow to the Lord
I promised him I'd go
Every step of the way
I made, I made, I made
I made, I made a vow
To the Lord, Oh yes I did.
Sometimes, O Satan
Gets on my track
Don't you know he tries
So many times to turn me back
But I know I've got to go on
And stand up to my test
For I made a vow
I got down on my knees
One Sunday morning to the Lord.
Did you make a vow to the Lord
Did you make, a vow to the Lord
Did you promise him
You'll go every step of the way
Did you promise the Lord
that you would run every step of the way'I made a vow
I made a vow.
