Naught of earth unmoved can stand-
Build your hopes on things eternal
Hold to God's Unchanging Hand.

Build your hopes on things eternal
Hold to God's Unchanging Hand.

How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer's ear!
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
and drives away his fears.

It makes the wounded spirit whole,
and calms the troubled breast;
'Tis manna to the hungry soul, and to the weary rest.

DEAR NAME! THE ROCK ON WHICH I BUILD, MY SHIELD AND HIDING PLACE;
MY NEVER FAILING TREASURY FILLED WITH BOUNDLESS STORES OF GRACE!!!

Why should I be discouraged?
Why should the teardrops come?
Why should my heart be lonely
And yearn for Heaven and home
When Jesus is my portion?
My constant friend is He,
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches me.
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches me.
Chorus
I sing because I'm happy,
I sing because I'm free!
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches me.

"Let not your heart be troubled,"
His tender words I hear,
And resting on His goodness
I know no doubt or fear.
Though by the path He leadeth,
Yet one thing I may see:
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches me.
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches me.

From: Burke

My life flows on in endless song;
Above earth's lamentation.
I catch the sweet, though far-off hymn
that hails a new creation;
Through all the tumult and the strife,
I hear the music ringing;
It finds an echo in my soul--
How can I keep from singing?

I lift my eyes; the cloud grows thin;
I see the blue above it;
And day by day this pathway smooths,
since first I learned to love it;
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
A fountain ever springing;
All things are mine since I am His;
How can I keep from singing?

Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me on.

When my way goes drear, precious Lord, linger near,
When my life is almost gone.
Hear my cry, hear my call,
Hold my hand lest I fall.
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me on.

When the darkness appears and the night draws near,
And the day is past and gone,
At the river I stand; guide my feet, hold my hand.
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me on.

I would, but cannot, sing
John NEWTON

Source : Goble 159

I would, but cannot, sing,
I would, but cannot, pray;
For Satan meets me when I try,
And frights my soul away.

I would, but can't, repent,
Though I endeavor oft;
This stony heart can ne'er relent
Till Jesus makes it soft.

I would, but cannot, love,
Though loved by love divine;
No arguments have pow'r to move
A soul so base as mine.

I would, but cannot, rest
In God's most holy will;
I know what he appoints is best,
Yet murmur at it still.

Oh, could I but believe!
Then all would easy be;
I would, but cannot — Lord, relieve,
My help must come from thee!

But if indeed I would,
Though I can nothing do,
Yet the desire is something good,
For which my praise is due.

By nature prone to ill,
Till thine appointed hour,
I was as destitute of will
As now I am of power.

Wilt thou not crown at length
The work thou hast begun?
And, with the will, afford me strength
In all thy ways to run?

Be Still, My Soul

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
To guide the future, as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds shall know
His voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below.

Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened in the vale of tears,
Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay
From His own fullness all He takes away.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord.
When disappointment, grief and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past
All safe and blessèd we shall meet at last.

Genie, it took me several hours to realize that your hymn was Finlandia, one of my all time favorites. I know it as "Be Still My Soul."

I've really enjoyed our gospel sing. I know every single song on here, many by heart, several verses. And each has many memories associated with it. I forgot to reference the names and sources of several of my posts, just assumed that the other singers here knew the words.

The service at the National Cathedral will be on TV in a few minutes and I'll be watching. It's always the music that gets to me.

A Shelter in the Time of Storm
Vernon J. Charlesworth, circa 1880.

The Lord's our Rock, in Him we hide,
A Shelter in the time of storm;
Secure whatever ill betide,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

Refrain

Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A weary land, a weary land;
Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

A shade by day, defense by night,
A Shelter in the time of storm;
No fears alarm, no foes afright,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

The raging storms may round us beat,
A Shelter in the time of storm
We'll never leave our safe retreat,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

O Rock divine, O Refuge dear,
A Shelter in the time of storm;
Be Thou our Helper ever near,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

MIDI HERE.

ONCE TO EVERY MAN AND NATION
Words: James R. Lowell, Music: Thomas J. Williams

Once to every man and nation, comes the moment to decide,
In the strife of truth with falsehood, for the good or evil side;
Some great cause, some great decision, offering each the bloom or blight,
And the choice goes by forever, 'twixt that darkness and that light.

Then to side with truth is noble, when we share her wretched crust,
Ere her cause bring fame and profit, and 'tis prosperous to be just;
Then it is the brave man chooses while the coward stands aside,
Till the multitude make virtue of the faith they had denied.

By the light of burning martyrs, Christ, Thy bleeding feet we track,
Toiling up new Calv'ries ever with the cross that turns not back;
New occasions teach new duties, time makes ancient good uncouth,
They must upward still and onward, who would keep abreast of truth.

Though the cause of evil prosper, yet the truth alone is strong;
Though her portion be the scaffold, and upon the throne be wrong;
Yet that scaffold sways the future, and behind the dim unknown,
Standeth God within the shadow, keeping watch above His own.

I just posted four hymns in La Lilandejo that I think are fairly pertinent to the events and feelings of the past week. I didn't put them in my web hymnal because they're all in English (though "This Is My Song..." is in the hymnal in Esperanto translation), and in three out of four cases I'm technically violating folks' copyrights (unless this falls under fair use, which I doubt). I do request that anyone making any further use of them at least try to get proper permission. (I have sent emails but no responses to date.)

Blessings to cheer a pilgrim's days,
Are always well worthwhile.

I realize that I posted some lyrics to "This Is My Song, O God Of All The Nations" incorrectly. I was going to type a correction, but Liland posted a link to the original lyrics for the first two verses and an alternate third verse. Here are those lyrics:

This Is My Song, O God of All the Nations
Lloyd Stone, 1992 (stanzas 1 & 2)
Georgia Harkness, ca. 1939, alt. (stanza 3)
© 1934, 1962, 1964 Lorenz Publishing Co.
Tune: FINLANDIA, Jean Sibelius, 1899

1.This is my song, O God of all the nations*,
A song of peace for lands afar and mine.
This is my home, the country where my heart is;
Here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine;
But other hearts in other lands are beating
With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.

2.My country's skies are bluer than the ocean,
And sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine;
But other lands have sunlight too, and clover,
And skies are everywhere as blue as mine.
O hear my song, thou God of all the nations,
A song of peace for their land and for mine.

3.This is my prayer, O Ruler of all nations:
Let thy reign come; on earth thy will be done.
In peace may all earth's people draw together,
And hearts united learn to live as one.
O hear my prayer, thou God of all the nations;
Myself I give thee; let thy will be done.

No storm can shake my inmost calm, while to this rock I'm clinging.
Since love is Lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing?

When tyrants tremble when they hear the bells of freedom ringing,
When friends rejoice both far and near, how can I keep from singing?
In prison cell and dungeon vile, our thoughts to them are winging.
When friends by shame are undefiled, how can I keep from singing?

Chorus:
Oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-
Oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo
Come Sunday, oh, come Sunday, that's the day.
Lord, dear Lord above, God Almighty, God of love,
Please look down and see my people through.

I believe that God put sun and moon up in the sky.
I don't mind the gray skies, 'cause they're just clouds passing by.

Chorus

Heaven is a goodness time, a brighter light on high.
(Spoken) Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
(Sung) And have a brighter by and by.

Chorus

I believe God is now, was then, and will always be.
With God's blessing we can make ith through eternity.
