02 Feb 98 - 02:37 AM (#20441) Subject: Lyr Add: Calon Lân^^ From: Helen Found the lyrics to Calon Lan at Barry Taylor's Traditional Welsh Tunes in Midi Format site, so the midi file is also available for downloading. http://www.islandnet.com/~btaylor/wlshmidi.htm The midi file, but not lyrics are available there for The Maid from the Parish of Penderyn. I used to have a bookmark on another Welsh music page. I'll keep looking for that one. Calon Lân is one of the best songs I have ever heard for putting goosebumps up & down my spine, when it is sung with harmonies and with a lot of feeling.

03 Feb 98 - 02:35 PM (#20542) Subject: Lyr Add: Calon Lân^^ From: Emily I learned a slightly different translation to Calon Lan: Do not give me golden money Or the stones from diamond mines For I want a heart that's happy Honest heart, a heart that shines Chorus Shining heart is full of goodness Purer than the lily's white Shining heart is always singing All the day and all the night Jewels glitter for a moment Then are lost in endless night But the pure and perfect heart Shines with a warm eternal light Chorus I don't have a third verse. Sorry I can't help you with the other song. Emily

20 Feb 98 - 03:51 AM (#21846) Subject: RE: Welsh songs From: Tormid Thanks to both. I did check back at Barry Taylor's site and found Calon Lan lyrics which had been added since he first put the midi up (and I got it there). I think they are both stirring pieces. I once heard "The Maid" sung by a Welsh male chorus and I almost fell over. |

03 Aug 98 - 08:26 PM (#34030) Subject: RE: Welsh songs From: Helen Tormid, I was reminded by the other thread on Welsh songs today that I have been meaning to thank you for recommending The Maid From the Parish of Penderyn. I went searching for it, heard it, loved it, now have the midi file and printed out sheet music, and a week ago my sister and I played it at an outdoor wedding - my sister plays flute and I play Celtic harp - and it sounded beautiful, very stirring. So thanks for sharing your favourite music because now it's one of my favourites too. Helen |

18 Sep 99 - 07:42 PM (#115391) Subject: RE: Welsh songs From: I suspect I may have a translation of "Merch o Blwy Penderyn" lurking in the cupboard. I'm not quite clear from the forgoing whether the original query was for what it meant, or a singable English lyric. Should I search my cupboard and contribute an intimation of the gist (it was on a Plethyn album - anyone who has not heard songs by Plethyn should arrange to do so immediately) or is the 'Maid of Penderyn' sufficient? There has been much debate in Manx newsgroups recently about whether Manx lyrics should be translated into English. Does it contribute to the the demise of the original language, or does it open peoples' eyes to the fact that (in many cases) there is far more to life than their monoglot cul-de-sac? Shoh slaynt, Bobby Bob
