ADD: The Jukebox as She Turned (Jeff Deitchman)

A song with the line "I still remember what was on the jukebox as she turned".

Sort of song that I'd call country, but country people might say was folk.

Any ideas?

I didn't find lyrics, but found this is old page. I don't know if it is still available.

hidden from the eye of chance is now available.

I'd like to say a big, big 'thank you' to all my friends who foolishly encouraged me; to the friends that have unselfishly passed on songs to me; to the folk clubs that have booked me over the years and to all those who helped me put the cd together. (Especially John Sutherland, Liz Merton, Tony Ricketts, Kerrin Worsfold and Tom Miskin.) A selection of traditional and contemporary classics (well I think they are). Twelve of my favourite ballads drawn from 30 years of singing in folk clubs in England and New Zealand. Songs to tug at head and heart:

pharaoh
the broom o' the cowden knowes
ned of the hill
chimes at midnight
holding back
the leaboy's lassie
bushes and briars
anathea
master kilby
gulf coast highway
I'm blowing away
I still remember what was on the jukebox as she turned

Also featuring two of New Zealand's most talented folk musician: John Sutherland: vocals, guitars and harmonica, Liz Merton: vocals and fiddle (Thank you John and Liz for your lovely harmonies and music!)

It's not a big production job, so if you'd like a copy please see me around the clubs or festivals or contact me direct:
tonyh@clear.net.nz or 04 479 6136 COST $18.00 (plus cost of post & packaging if ordered by phone or email)
Thanks Tony Hillyard

Don't know if that will help or not.......

Well it might. If noone else comes up with the goods I can try emailing Tony Hilyard - if that address still works, of course.

Thanks. It's a song that I heard sung in a singaround, and it's hovered on the edge of my mind since. I remember it struck me as very effective, without wasting words, and I'd like to know who wrote it.

This is a song by Maggie Holland called 'Smokey's Bar' and is featured on the CD 'By Heart'. It also performed by Nic Jones and is featured on the CD 'unearthed'.

In fact Nic Jones titles the song The Jukebox As She Turned and credits the song to Jeff Deitchman. His notes say he got it from Rick and Lorraine Lee (who give the same title and credit on Contrasts - see Rick and Lorraine Lee). This is the Nic Jones version from Unearthed.

THE JUKEBOX AS SHE TURNED
(Jeff Deitchman)

Now all the boys down at Smokey's Bar they could easily understand
How Judy left without a word, but not without a man.
That old routine that she had going was like the sun so sure
That by surprise just may not rise but it always has before.

CHORUS
And I still remember what was on the jukebox as she turned -
The dobro part out of Cheating Heart. She never has returned.

She snapped the little plated latch and she closed her pocket book.
And then paying for what she had drunk, she gave all us boys a look.
And something in that little glance sent creeps throughout the room.
Noone stared or even dared to breathe or even move.
CHORUS

And I cannot say just what others thought, Ah, but I can likely guess.
Well they were probably scared of where, just where, she'd take what we'd confessed.
CHORUS

So now that good old gang down at Smokey's Bar they've just about busted up,
With no one here left to drink our tears or to fill out empty cup.
CHORUS

Whoops, I made the assumption that it was one of Maggie Hollands' just because she sings it and it sounds like one of hers ... I really *must* stop doing that!

The lyrics are correct in case anyone is interested. The song is on a cassette album by Jeff Deitchman, "Silver Dollar", dated 1979. I just found it after looking for it for 20 years. Jeff gave up performing, I understand, but he was a brilliant songwriter and performer, as well as being a very nice guy.

Hi mike m. The only version I've heard is Nic Jones. I think he plays it in a dropped C tuning (CGCGCD) and, as usual, not easy to convert into a normal chord sequence/tab. It's not that difficult though, Even I can play it!
The York address listed above is no longer in use as the family moved to the West Country a couple of years ago...Try Mollie Music to contact them.

I have been known to do a version of this in DADGAD.

The chords I use probably translate to

D/F#m|A/D/|G/A/|D///|

The absolute best version of this song is sung by Maggie Holland on her CD By Heart, Rhiannon records RHYD5008 dating from 1995.
The words make more sense and are sung clearly and in a style that really suits the lyric.
This CD has a number of other superb songs including Cathy Come Home, about homelessness, The Rowan Tree, Evergreen and Postcards from Scarborough, all of which are sung in Maggie's Hampshire accent in a voice that is totally sincere.

Wow... Jeff is still out there! Thanks, Jeff, for cluing us in!

A number..10? 15? 18? years ago, I got a call from someone who knew I had once done video at the Washington Folk Festival. He asked if I had a video of Jeff, because he really wanted on of Jeff's...ummm... stranger songs. I said I did, but I would need Jeff's permission. I offered to locate Jeff and ask..... so I did, and he said sure... and I gave this guy Jeff's phone #, and I guess they corresponded and everyone was happy..
The song was "Chicken in the Fridge" 3rd one down...

It is just as catchy & clever as I remember it so many years ago...

And DO peruse all the other treasures Jeff has made available.....

Most songs tell a story, but some writers are able to capture a moment in time.

This is one. And another is Cider with Rosie by John Tams.
