thanks,

The Southern Crescent wrecked in 1978. If you know the name of a singer who did the song, check under his name or post it. Is Joey Davis aka Faith Massive?

I've have the refrains from the two songs.

"Wreck of the Southern Crescent" (which is by David Purvis and Mac McGregor)

Refrain:"Where are the diesels that pulled the Crescent by?
And where are the silver cars that rode so proud and high?
And what were the names of the six that had died?
Rode to their deaths on the Nelson Mountain side."

"The By Pass" By Joe(y) Davis

Refrain: "You don't know what you got til its gone"

My dad George David Purvis sang and co-wrote the song with his buddy Mac McGregor "Wreck of the Southern Crescent" along with the other song on the album "I'll See You in the Morning" wrote about my mom leaving him. He now lives in Shipman next to his mom and dad and i go every other month for 5 weekends, he still sings on special occasions and he has the newspaper articles of the song and the lyrics are on that! Great song

In a little town called Elma(?) on the 4th day of July,
The mighty Southern Crescent came rolling through with pride
From New orleans to Washington her name was known by all.
The finest in the southland since the Wasbash Cannonball

The By-Pass (Joey Davis, Major Recording Company, Waynesboro, VA)

The highway bypassed their town.
Everyone was putting everyone down.
They blamed everyone else, 'cause they wouldn't blame themselves.
Said they wouldn't stay here very long,
But you don't know what you've got until it's gone.

The stores weren't large but they fed the people around,
And we even had a movie hall on the other side of town.
People they would come, sometimes from far away,
And on the billboard outside it read, "The Longest Day."

The men on the night shift left to go to work,
But some wouldn't make it for the rocks and sliding earth.
Their families lay down for a night of peaceful sleep,
Not knowing before the dawn, they'd drown in the muddy deep.

And then that night the rains came down,
The loud clap of thunder and a roaring screaming sound.
Children cried for mother, and mother prayed to God,
A lot of Nelson loved ones lay beneath their sod.

The highway that took the business from their lives
beaming a light in the night.
When the planes came down to save their town
The highway was the only spot was saved of the crumpled ground.

Now the night of a disaster is like a terrible dream,
But we respect the highway in the highest esteem.
We won't forget that night and the misery we have known,
We're gonna build the town back, it won't take very long.
You don't know what you've got until it's gone.

What I remember of "Wreck of the Southern Crescent"

In a little town called Elma, in the peaceful countryside,
The mighty Southern Crescent came roaring through with pride.
From New Orleans to Washington her name was known by all,
The finest in the southland since the Wasbash Cannonball.

CHORUS:
Oh where are the diesels that pulled the Crescent by?
And where are the silver cars that rolled to proud and high?
And what were the names of the six that have died?
Gone to their death in Rocky Cut on a Nelson mountainside.

They say a train can only take that curve at forty-five,
But eighty miles an hour was the speed the Crescent tried.
Among the twisted wreckage, the dead and dying lay,
Those who were able stood and wept, the rest knelt down to pray.

There's at least one more verse I can't recall.

Thank you so much for the lyrics!! A true, native response to the disaster of Hurricane Camille in Nelson County. I remember the chorus like this:

The night of the disaster was like a terrible dream.
But we regard the highway, now, with the highest esteem.
We won't forget the pain, and the misery we have known.
We're gonna build the town back up, and it won't take very long
Ooooh you don't know what you've got until it's gone...

The engineer was working on a faulty switch it's said
He knew the grade at Elma was coming up ahead.
And when his final work was done he cursed his awful fate
Even as he pulled the brake he knee it was too late.
CHORUS

We sing of '97 and the Lynchburg Danville run
The 12-62 is known by everyone
When that southern crescent she left her tracks to stay
A bloody page in history was written down that day.
CHORUS
