Sing With Me

23 Sep 01 - 01:53 AM (#556864)
Subject: Sing With Me
From: Alice

At my last song circle, before the 11th, I was the only one who showed up. I can't make it to the Getaway or any of the other gatherings of Mudcatters, so here's a virtual circle, if anyone wants to join in. It's hard to know what to choose for a starter... this may seem an odd choice, but I'll begin with

AS TIME GOES BY.

Alice, I'm currently watching the BBC 'As Time Goes By' show and enjoy it. But a different tune just popped into my head: 'Those Were the Days'.

As Time Goes By, Down by the Old Millstream, Those Were the Days... Is this a theme night?

On Orders from God (it's been kicking around my head since members of a local cult were accused of starving a 10-month-old boy to death, but seems appropriate to the times and I'd love to sing it with a circle.)

When they cut off the world,
I didn't blame 'em at all
Cause it made 'em feel cheap,
and it made 'em feel small
But the voice that they heeded
Was just their own pride
And a little boy suffered
That little boy died

Aw, give 'em a sign
Bring sight to their eyes
Show them that love
Is the light of your way
Please do it soon
Aw, do it today
They're sayin' a baby died on orders from God

On orders from God
On orders from God
The devil I say when you tell me your orders from God

Drink with me to days gone by
Sing with me the songs we knew
Here's to pretty girls who went to our heads
Here's to witty girls who went to our beds
Here's to them and here's to you!

Drink with me to days gone by
Can it be you fear to die?
Will the world remember you
When you fall?
Can it be your life
Means nothing at all?
Will your death be one more lie?

Drink with me to days gone by
To the life that used to be
At the shrine of friendship, never say die
Let the wine of friendship never run dry
Here's to you and here's to me

Has our conscience shown?
Has the sweet breeze blown?
Has all the kindness gone?
Hope still lingers on
I drink myself of newfound pity
Sitting alone in New York City

And I don't know why

Are we listening
To hymns of offering?
Have we eyes to see
That love is gathering?
All the words that I've been reading
Have now started the act of bleeding
Into one...

So I walk up on high
And I step to the edge
To see my world below
And I laugh at myself
As the tears roll down
'Cause it's the world I have known
It's the world I have known

TIREE LOVE SONG

Horee horo my bonnie wee girl
Horee horo my fair one
Will you come away with me love
To be my own my rare one

All together down by the sea
Down by the sea in the gloamin'
Stepping it lightly with dancing feet
And then together homin'

Smiling the land, shining the sea
Sweet was the smell of the heather
Would we were younger both you and me
The two of us together

and
COME BY THE HILLS
(Music: Traditional Gaelic [Buachaill On Eirne];Words: Gordon Smith)

Come by the hills to the land where fancy is free
And stand where the peaks meet the sky and the lochs meet the sea
Where the rivers run clear and the bracken is gold in the sun
Ah, the cares of to-morrow can wait 'til this day is done

Oh, come by the hills to the land where life is a song
And sing while the birds fill the air with their joy all day long
Where the trees sway in time and even the wind sings in tune
Ah, the cares of to-morrow can wait 'til this day is done

Come by the hills to the land where legend re-mains
Where stories of old fill the heart and may yet come a-gain
Where our past has been lost and the future has still to be won
Ah, the cares of to-morrow can wait 'til this day is done

Ending: repeat first verse

This is the new song by Michael Jackson, from his new album to be released soon:

Cry

Somebody shakes when the wind blows
Somebody's missing a friend
Hold on
Somebody's lacking a hero
And they have not a clue
When it's all going to end

Stories buried and untold
Someone is hiding the truth
Hold on
When will this mystery unfold?
And will the sun ever shine
In the blind man's eyes when he cries?

Chorus:
You can change the world (I can't do it by myself)
You can touch the sky (I'm going to need somebody's help)
You're the chosen one (I'm going to need some kind of sign)
If we all cry at the same time tonight

People laugh when they're feeling sad
Someone is taking a life
Hold on
Respect to believe in your dreams
Tell me, where were you
When your children cried last night?

Faces fill with madness
Miracles unheard of
Hold on
Faith is found in the winds
All we have to do
Is reach for the truth

Chorus

And when that flag blows
There'll be no more wars
And when all calls
I will answer all your prayers

You can change the world (I can't do it by myself)
You can touch the sky (I'm going to need somebody's help)
You're the chosen one (I'm going to need some kind of sign)
If we all cry at the same time tonight

Change the world.

Alice, "None But One" is the title song for the CD, "Non But One/High Hills and Mountains, which is a combo of two albums. NBO is just a little poem I made and set to an sdaptation of the melody, "Nonesuch."

Across the fields there moves a sway,
It moves with human sound;
And some do walk and some do run-
Some fall upon the ground...
And some do stop to help the weak,
Some trample on the others;
And some do laugh and some do weep
And all of them are brothers.

And sounding all around a sound
Around and everywhere-
And none but one can understand,
And none but one can hear...
I mine and I thine, father, mother, son,
I me and I thee, and all of us are one.

I saw four travellers in a dream,
All in the wind and weather.
The chain they carried in their hands
It bound them all together.
And one was yellow, one was red
And older than the others,
And one was black and one was white-
And all of them were brothers.

And sounding all around a sound (etc.- use this as chorus- it is higher in the scale than the verse, and not part of the regular,"Nonesuch" tune). Love to all, Jean

Boab, your spelling, according to a poster in one of the threads about this song, is in agreement with a Child spelling. The spelling seems to vary somewhat, depending upon the source. (See the DT, for instance.) It was pointed out in one person's post in one of those threads that the important thing was to pronounce it correctly - with the double E sound. I am an outlander and can only plead ignorance.

Having said that, please allow me to try to not mangle the Gaelic in SHULE AROON.

What are the songs that you sing when washing the dishes? For many years, Wild Mountain Thyme would automatically come out whenever I did the laundry or wash dishes. Now when I do chores around the house, the song that seems to pop out is Gershwin's "Someone To Watch Over Me". Or sometimes, if I'm warmed up, "Vilia" from the Merry Widow, or "Think of Me" from Phantom of the Opera.
